CV ClinicSessions are available on a partly prebookable basis via mycareer.soton.ac.uk. Please also check for availability on the day.

You can receive expert CV advice provided by Specialist Career Practitioners at the Opportunities Fair 2015.

The CV Clinic will be held from 11.00-13.00 at the Fair.

LinkedIn LabFor many, LinkedIn has become an integral part of the job search. This Lab will give you the chance to receive feedback on what you need to do to optimise your profile and best leverage your skills and endorsement section. If you do not already have a LinkedIn account, you will learn how to create one.

The LinkedIn Lab will be held from 12.00-15.00 and will operate on a drop-in basis, so there is no need for you to preregister to attend.

Lynda.com DemonstrationsLynda.com instructional videos will help you learn business, software, technology and creative skills to achieve personal and professional goals.Attend a demonstration to learn how you can benefit from using the system – as a Southampton student you already have free access at http://go.soton.ac.uk/lynda !

Lynda.com demonstrations will be held every half an hour from 12.00-14.00 with slots partly pre-bookable via mycareer.soton.ac.uk. The remaining slots will be available on a drop-in basis at the Fair, so please check for availability on the day.

Students’ Union Student GroupsStudying at university is just the beginning, and the Students’ Union gives you a range of opportunities to have fun and socialise. Student ChampionsStudent Champions are students who work in partnership with academic staff in your department to develop innovative approaches to student learning and development. There are a number of student champion groups at the University, working in key areas of strategic development such as ichamps (Innovations in education and digital literacy), OPUS champs (opportunities at the University of Southampton) and enterprise champs. Enteprise Champs have worked with programme directors to devise enterprise modules. iChamps bring innovative digital tools and applications into the classroom to make the teaching more engaging and experiential from the student perspective. Student Ambassador SchemeStudent Ambassadors work with the Recruitment and Outreach Team to lead and support the delivery of a variety of on and off campus activities, residential events and mentoring schemes with young people aged 10-18 years of age.

Nearly all the activities we offer involve students because we believe that they often have the greatest impact on young peoples’ opinions. As a Student Ambassador, you will become a role model to the young people we work with. This offers a responsibility that can be both challenging and extremely rewarding.

Insider Career MentoringDo you want to be inspired? Wish to learn from someone who works in a career sector you are interested in?

The Insider Career Mentoring Programme is managed by the Careers Service. It provides an opportunity for students receive relevant and up to date career sector or employability focused advice and help from someone already in the world of work, ideally within the career sector or profession that you would like to work in.

Although open to all students, the Insider Mentoring Programme is most useful to students who have already begun to develop a career plan.

Excel Southampton Internship ProgrammeObtaining work experience during your degree has never been more crucial. Year In EmploymentThe Year in Employment is an exciting new opportunity for all undergraduate students at the University of Southampton, which allows you to spend a year working in an organisation as part of your degree. This will give you valuable work experience whilst you develop your employability skills, and could help in your career planning. Students can undertake a Year in Employment after their penultimate year, and the opportunity will be open to all students who have no placement opportunities currently built into their course, pending approval from their Programme Director.

This programme is awaiting validation and currently open to expressions of interest from students who wish to be considered for the Year in Employment.

Temp BankTempbank is a University service which provides Faculties around the University with temporary workers for a variety of roles. Students are welcome to join our mailing lists to learn of opportunities and to respond if a position is of interest to them. The assignments can be short or long term and many can work around a student’s study commitments offering you the opportunity to earn money, possibly provide you with an introduction to a formal working environment and could be a useful attribute to your CV as work history.

Student Consultancy ProgrammeDevelop your business skills by delivering solutions to local organisations. Work in a team of student consultants on an 8 week project during term-time and enhance your CV. Training is provided with £250 payment for completed projects.

We will work with variety of local businesses, charities and community groups. For any role in any sector, recruiters will ask you to provide proof of core professional competency skills. The Student Consultancy is designed to help you to develop and display such key skills as:

− Team Work − Communication − Problem-solving/Creativity − Self-management − Commercial awareness − Working with clients

as well as giving you insight as to how business actually works.

Student Consultancy runs for eight weeks in each semester. We will provide training to prepare you for your project. Topics include an introduction to consulting, key business issues, market research, interviewing techniques, problem solving and techniques for presenting your recommendations and reports. Each team will be able to access support from Careers who will be available to give advice and help.

Student ExperienceThe Student Consultancy Programme has been incredibly valuable experience, not just as an asset to my CV but also to enhance my internpersonal skills and confidence. I would highly recommend it to anybody wanting to gain work experience alongside their degree programme.

Student Experience[This] Placement is an exciting and invaluable opportunity to develop both personally and professionally in a corporate environment and I’ve been given a great amount of responsibility. For example, last month I planned, created and executed the entire marketing content for the new M&S baby range that is now being sold in over 50 countries.

Georgia Varti did a placement year at Marks and Spencer in 2014/15 as part of her BSc Marketing course.
