    Habitats(fromhabitare = to live)

The place where an animal resides (lives) is called its habitat. Some animals live near people;some like to live away from people. Animals adapt to their habitats. Some animals are just right

for hot jungles and rain forests while others are well made to live in cooler climates. Look at the

list of animals below and place them in the habitats where they can most likely be found. If an

animal can be found in more than one habitat, place it in all where it may be found. There are

many different possible answers. Compare your answers with those of your classmates. You will

probably learn some new information about the animals.

    Animal Derivatives

Many English adjectives are derived from Latin animal names. Just as we personify animals, we

often describe humans using the animal adjectives. For example, sometimes we use theseadjectives to describe physical characteristics.

My aunt looks absolutely elephantine in that dress.

How does my aunt look? Probably, quite big.

At other times we use these adjectives to describe personality traits.

My brothers simian behavior is totally embarassing.

How does my brother act? Active and playful.

Fill in the chart below by first describing, in two or three words, the physical characteristics the

animal adjective evokes; then, describe the personality traits that might be associated with theterm. DO NOT use the animals name in your description!

    Other Activities About Animals

    1) Collect stuffed animals representing each of the animals in the syllabus. Use these animals

as props during instruction, being sure always to use the Latin name. For example, you mightask, How many feet does avis have? As the students learn more Latin vocabulary, the

questions may be asked in Latin, e.g. Quot pedes avis habet?

    2) Have students cut out pictures of animals from magazines and make a flash card for each

animal name with the picture on the front and the Latin name on the back.

    3) Reproduce the animal cut-out patterns on graphics CD for your class. Have students color

and display their animal sets as mobiles or on a bulletin board.

    4) Have students rewrite favorite rhymes or fairy tales using the Latin names rather than the

English for all animals. Or, have students make up their own fairy tales or rhymes using the

    animal names.

    5) Bring to class a Mystery Animal each day. This may be a stuffed animal, plastic toy,

photograph, or simply the name on a piece of paper. Give clues such as habitat, food

preferences, etc. Have students try to guess the animal for a token reward.

    6) Have students make up Crazy Animals by combining body parts from two or more of theLatin animals.

ex. Tauravis = an animal with the head and body of a taurus and the feet of an avis.

This works especially well after the students also know their Latin body part names and can

    include them in their descriptions.

    7) Have students make up silly songs about the animals. One example for younger students

might be (to the tune of Here We Go Loopdy-Loo)

    Vacca says Moo-moo

    Vacca says Moo-moo

    Vacca says Moo-moo

    Moo-diddy-moo-diddy-moo
