EXPLANATORY NOTE TO THE
INDEX
The Index is laid out in two sections as
follows:
SECTION I – Subject Index
Subjects have been classified
under thirteen main headings, viz:
Animals; Badges; Battles and Campaigns;
Biographical; Book Reviews; Buttons;
Colours, Standards and Guidons;
Formation Signs; Medals and Decorations;
Museums; Shoulder Titles; Uniforms;
Weapons. Those remaining unclassified
have been inserted in a general section
entitled Miscellaneous, with a brief
reference to the subject matter of the
article where necessary.
SECTION II – Regimental/Unit Index.
This section has been arranged
as follows: British Army; Indian Army –
which is further sub-divided into Cavalry;
Artillery Engineers, Sappers & Miners,
Signals, Pioneers; Infantry; Gurkhas, A &
Q Services; Frontier Units; Auxiliary
Force (India); Imperial Service
Troops/Indian State Forces; Indian Navy;
Indian Air Force; Police; Overseas,
including Brunei, Burma, Ceylon/Sri
Lanka, Gulf States, Hong Kong, Malaya,
Nepal, Singapore, South Africa and
Miscellaneous. Indian units have been
placed in order of precedence according to
the 1947 list, with previous units in their
lineage listed under these, e.g. a regimental
medal to 12th Madras Infantry is listed
under 2nd Punjab Regiment – 12th Madras
Infantry became 72nd Punjabis in 1903
which in turn became 3rd Bn., 2nd Punjab
Regiment in 1922. Regiments disbanded
before 1947 are inserted under a separate
heading, as are new post-Independence
raised units.
There have been a number of
changes in format since IMHS was
formed. Initially known as the Indian
Military Collectors Society (IMCS), a
duplicated A4 size Newsletter, later and
briefly called DURBAR, was issued. It is
shown in the Index as NL. In the first two
years it was supplemented by an annual
Journal in the now familiar A5 format
(shown in the Index as J1984 or J1985).
Subsequent editions of the Newsletter
appeared in the A5 format though initially
and somewhat confusingly called Journal,
as with the previous annual documents.
The name DURBAR was re-introduced
with effect from Vol. 5, No 2. The name
changes to the A5 format have been
disregarded for the purposes of this index
and all entries other than the NL and
J1984/5 referred to above are indicated by
reference to the Volume, Number and
page, e.g. 6/2/8 is Volume 6, No 2, page 8.
Follow-up articles or correspondence
appear immediately after the main entry,
often with just the volume/page number
reference. An asterisk * denotes an
illustration.
It should be noted that in the
early years the Society did not necessarily
issue four journals a year; thus Volume 2
consisted of issues 1, 2 and 4 (3 was not
issued). In Volume 3, No 3 some pages
are marked as Vol. 3, No 2. Both
Volumes 4 and 5 consisted of issues 1, 2
and 3 (4 was not issued in either year).
From then onwards we achieved four
issues a year for each Volume. Dates were
introduced to the front cover with effect
from Vol. 6, No 4 (Winter 1989) but have
been excluded from this Index.
The former India Office Library
was merged with the British Library and
was originally known as the Oriental and
India Office Collection. Although now
falling within the Asia Pacific Collection
documents relevant to the Indian Army are
now accessed through the India Office
Library and Records (IOLR) heading.
Early references in the journal referred to
India Office Library. For the sake of
uniformity all such references are now
shown as BL-IOLR.
Key to Index References:
NL/1/2 - Newsletter/No.1/Page 2
J/1984 (5)/2 - Journal/1984 or 1985/Page 2
10/2/3 - Durbar/Vol.10/No.2/Page 3
For those accessing the on-line version of
Durbar the page numbers can be ignored.
Stripping out earlier society news and
administrative items has altered the page
numbers but the hyper-links should take
you to the relevant article.
