Background• Lakehead District School Board’s Strategic Plan outlines its commitment to the

success of every student. To support student success, the Board offers a variety of high quality programs that support the varying interests, abilities and learning needs of all students.

• Policy 4010 outlines that, “Lakehead District School Board shall implement a consistent process for regular review, revision and improvement of school programs”. In addition, Policy 4010 Procedures specify that “wherever feasible, revisions to program will consider input from students, parents and guardians, and the school community”.

• Report No. 012-14 on December 17, 2013.

• Final report on Special Education Program Review (Report No. 103-12) was presented to the Board on October 9, 2012.

• Final report on Secondary Programs (Report No. 040-13) was presented on April 9, 2013.

• Maximize inquiry based experiential, collaborative learning environments to support and enhance student engagement and achievement.

• Ensure that all schools provide authentic opportunities for student voice, choice and input into developing norms and expectations in the intermediate division.

• Ensure there is a common process to review and communicate transition information with all necessary staff.

• Explore the viability of reach-ahead and other experiential opportunities to engage all students. Develop after school extra-curricular opportunities at secondary schools for families of schools, including provisions for transportation.

• Ensure that each secondary school will have a Student Success Lead whose duties align with Ministry expectations.

• Ensure that all Student Success classrooms operate in alignment with Ministry expectations and offer credit recovery and on-going credit rescue at all grades and all levels.

• Utilize in-school alternative education periods in each secondary school to provide opportunities to engage students at risk to stay in their home schools close to the adult connections and to maintain and enhance a breadth of programs.

• Review and utilize creative strategies through collaboration to maintain and enhance a breadth of programs. This includes, but is not limited to:o Pathways for all students;o Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM);o French Immersion Programs;o System Co-operative Education Programs;o Dual Credits;o Advanced Placement (AP); ando International Baccalaureate (IB).

• Use of consistent timely prevention and intervention strategies to promote student success and well-being.

• Continue to share best practices to develop consistent implementation of differentiated instruction.

• Promote summer volunteer hour opportunities for Grade 8 students such as working with the Grade 1-3 summer literacy and numeracy camps.

• Utilize additional learning opportunities being offered through the Northern E-Learning Consortium (NELC). 

• Monitor and enhance the impact of secondary summer school pilot programming.

• Explore the viability of targeted literacy and numeracy interventions at Grades 7, 8 and 9 to reduce learning gaps and provide support for students in transition.

• Explore partnerships to provide noon hour and after school remedial and homework help programming.

• Further enhance school leaver outreach and re-engagement.

• Effectively utilize alternative programming to reduce the number of students who access SAL.

• Review program offerings K-6 aimed at reducing learning gaps and providing supports for students at risk before they reach Grade 7.

• Investigate successful Grade 8 summer camp learning opportunities.

• Continue to creatively maintain both core and elective programming through school collaboration and system planning.
