And is anything really as it seems? ese are just some of the questions posed by ILLUSION: Nothing Is As It Seems, the mind–bending new exhibition at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. Created by Science Gallery at Trinity College Dublin, ILLUSION playfully combines techniques used by magicians and explored by neuroscientists. ILLUSION features intriguing exhibits that deceive the eyes of the visitor, showing that what we perceive is oſten radically different from the reality we observe. ILLUSION is curated by psychologist, author and magician Richard Wiseman, and researched by deception artist Paul Gleeson. Open through Sunday, January 11, 2015. Bilingual. NOVEMBER—Family Science Saturdays. �is month’s theme is Observational Science. Learn about stamp making and the avant-garde methods used by Surrealist artists. Activities free with paid admission. 1–3 PM in the Tinkering Studio.

Nov. 1: Papel Picado. Design and create your own paper banners for Dia De Los Muertos.

Nov. 8 & 22: Surrealist Methodologies. Create abstract art imagery like some of the great modern artists.

Nov. 15 & 29: Creating Stamps. Use your imagination to create three-dimensional stamps for printing.

NOVEMBER 3—Senior Monday Lecture: Dr. Philip Pryde on Alternative Energy: What the Media Reports Are Leaving Out. Join Phil Pryde, professor emeritus at San Diego State University, who specialized in environmental policy, as he speaks about the strong and weak points of various types of renewable energy. Following the lecture, catch a special screening of the IMAX �lm Forces of Nature. 10:30 AM lecture; noon theater show; seniors $8, adults $17.95.

NOVEMBER 6—Young Scientists Session 3: Winter Wonderland. Preschoolers ages 3–5 (and a parent) explore the scienti�c wonders of the world through experimentation, investigation and scienti�c questioning. Sessions run monthly, four weeks each. Limited to eight students per class. �ursday, Saturday or Sunday morning. 9 AM–10:30 AM. Members $75, nonmembers $85. Session 3 ends December 7.

NOVEMBER—Tinkerers’ Club. Join us on Saturday mornings to learn new skills and work on fun projects that you get to take home with you. Supplies are limited. Advance registration is recommended. Prices (per project): $12 members; $15 nonmembers. 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM in the Tinkering Studio.

Nov. 8 & 22—Paper Making. Tinkerers will create their very own recycled paper.

Nov. 15 & 29—Vegetable Prints. Explore the nature of vegetables and use them as a tool for printmaking.

NOVEMBER 9—Military Family Day. �e Fleet partners with the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI)

FLEET EVENTSand the San Diego Military Family Collaborative to invite military families to enjoy the Fleet for free in celebration of our new traveling exhibition, Genome: Unlocking Life's Code. Military families who have registered for the event will receive free admission to the Fleet, and all visitors to the science center that day can enjoy complimentary hands-on activities and a military resources information fair amongst the interactive exhibits. 10 AM–6 PM.

NOVEMBER 10—Suds & Science—A�ack of the Viruses, From the Flue to Ebola. Is the �u shot really bene�cial? How worried should you be about Ebola? And how prepared are San Diego Hospitals to handle viruses like Ebola? Join Farhad Bryan Imam, MD, Ph. D, as he discusses the biology of viruses and their di�erent levels of contagiousness. �is event will help us sort out the facts from the media hype, understand treatment procedures and help us �nd out what we can do to prevent ourselves from ge�ing sick. Location: Ortega's, 141 University Ave, San Diego, CA 92103. 6:30–8 PM. Free.

NOVEMBER 15—Noah and Alexis Beery at the Fleet �e Fleet is excited to welcome Noah and Alexis Beery. �e twins are featured in the exhibition Genome: Unlocking Life’s Code. Diagnosed early in life with cerebral palsy, the twin’s conditions seemed to get worse as they got older and seemed to resemble cerebral palsy less and less every year. In 2009, the technology for genome sequencing became available for the twins and changed their lives. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear their story. 10:30 AM–2:30 PM.

NOVEMBER 22—Science Sleepover. Have you ever wanted to have your very own “Night at the Museum” adventure? �e Fleet’s Science Sleepover Night makes this possible! �is event is open to adults over the age of 18 and children ages 6–13. �is night of fun includes museum admission and exploration of our eight exhibit galleries, fun educational workshops, a scavenger hunt in the science center, and a light continental breakfast. Celestial Illusions. Is the full moon really bigger on the horizon? Are the stars in a constellation really close to each other? �is month in our live planetarium show we’ll explore celestial illusions, as well as explain how our digital system projects the illusion of the sky on the planetarium dome. A professional astronomer leads backyard stargazers through the universe. �e San Diego County Astronomy Association provides free telescope viewing outdoors on the Prado in Balboa Park, weather and operational requirements permi�ing.

�e World Champion of Magic, Jason Latimer, presents his one-of-a-kind show live in the Heiko� Giant Dome �eater. Latimer combines magic and science to create mind-blowing e�ects. Your jaw will drop as he shapes water, bends light, walks through solid objects, manipulates gravity-defying liquids and performs countless other illusions, all rooted in applied science. �is is a family-friendly show, but it is well beyond pulling rabbits out of hats!
