Fred Friendly The historic October 9, 1954, broadcast on CBS of "See It Now"

is credited by many as a watershed mark in the country's view of Senator Joseph McCarthy.

Friendly put principle into practice as president of CBS News from 1964-1966, resigning in protest over the network’s decision to an "I Love Lucy" rerun instead of broadcasting live coverage of  Senate hearings on the Vietnam War.

The experience led to his resolve to promote the concept of noncommercial television, and he became the driving force behind the creation of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Fred Friendly “Make the agony of

decision-making so intense that you can escape only by thinking.”

Murrow and Friendly teamed to produce a CBS Radio documentary series inspired by their record albums — a weekly show called Hear It Now and hosted by Murrow. The show moved to TV as See It Now on Sunday, November 18, 1951.

Rosabeth Moss Kanter Chair of Harvard Business School. She's a prolific writer.  Open communication raises the stakes for leaders:

It discloses their shortcomings along with their successes.

Kanter's message is about empowerment through change and enabling people to think and do for themselves as they turn change into an ally.

"E-communication is the core of e-culture." Leaders have curiosity, not denial. Good messages have simplicity, consistent,

repetition, and demonstration.

When there are problems. . .

"Face the facts, and face the music.  Communicate to all constituencies right away--otherwise any messages sound defensive and reactive.  Identify actions to solve the problem, and announce them, even if they won't start right away.  Then keep communicating, with frequent updates on revelations and progress.“ -Kanter
