Modular Refineries

Clients choose what

equipment will be new, used

or rebuilt. Chemex engineers

can mix and match the

processing units to build the

refinery or gas processing

plant you need. Chemex has

constructed or modified 56

modular refineries and gas

plants since 1974.

Chemex equipment is

designed to be transported by land or sea to any location. The equipment is fabricated in

the same configuration as the process unit site plan. All piping, instruments, and electrical

connections are made among the skids and tested. After completion of testing, the equipment

is disassembled, packed, shrink-wrapped, and shipped.

A crude oil plant or atmospheric distillation unit (ADU) is the first step in the refining pro-

cess. The products derived from an ADU include naphtha, kerosene, diesel and ADU residu-

um. Naphtha can be mixed with ethanol or other octane boosters and used as a motor gaso-

line. Kerosene can be used as a jet fuel if treated and blended with additives. Diesel can be

used as fuel if it meets required sulfur specifications. ADU residuum may be used as a burner

fuel or further refined in a vacuum unit to produce marine diesel. Under certain circumstanc-

es naphtha and ADU residuum can be remixed and put back into a crude supply to be deliv-

ered as part of a crude stream. Chemex crude oil topping plants come in a variety of sizes

from 500 bpd to 20,000 bpd. The equipment can operate at a 1/2 capacity. For larger capacity

refineries, multiple ADUs can be combined to achieve higher throughput requirements.

Atmospheric Distillation unit (ADU) - Separates the different fractions of the crude oil according to boiling range into naphtha, kerosene, diesel, and residuum products. It operates at less than fifteen psig.

Vacuum Distillation Unit (VDU) – Pro-duces asphalt, and marine diesel fuel (MDO) from heavy fuel oil (HFO).

Hydrodesulfurization Unit (HDS) – Re-moves sulfur compounds from distillate products.

Catalytic Reformer Unit (CRU) – For producing high-octane motor gasoline from naphtha.

Hydrocracker Unit (HCU) – Increases diesel production from heavier products.

Desalter – Removes salt from crude oil prior to distillation to prevent fouling and corrosion.

Splitter/Stabilizer– Separates a feedstock into two products.

Flare – Combusts excess vapor released by process equipment.

Asphalt Equipment

Chemex manufactures the following modular equipment for asphalt manufacturing:

-- Polymer-modified Asphalt (PMA) Plant mixes polymers and usually several other chemical components into liquid hot base asphalt. The purpose of producing PMA is to provide asphalt that meets the new superpave requirements with added strength and flexibility and a wider temperature range than non-modified asphalt.

-- Cutback Blender blends asphalt with a hydrocarbon (naphtha, kerosene, or diesel) to pro-duce a less viscous product than straight asphalt. The lighter fraction evaporates with time

leaving the base asphalt.

-- Oxidizer or Blow Still oxidizes asphalt by chemically reacting oxygen with asphalt. Oxidation changes the asphalt properties to meet the requirements of the finished product specifications.

-- Asphalt Emulsion Plant produces as-phalt emulsions containing approximately 70% asphalt mixed with 30% water and chemicals. Cationic and anionic are the two types of emulsion with different affinity for aggregates based on the ion charge.

Oil and Gas Division

Oil and gas companies depend on clean, quality water for recovery, exploration and production in the field. For example, many need ultra-soft water for oil field steam generators and boilers, to reduce scaling and protect their equipment. Culli-gan Matrix Solutions® uses patented tech-nology to facilitate recovery processes and help lengthen the lifespan of steam generators and other types of equipment, leading to accelerated revenue capture.

Water Treatment for Oil Field Steam Injection

Oil and gas companies depend on clean water for oil field steam injection. Modules from the Culligan Matrix Solutions product arsenal, including filters and softeners can be used to decrease hardness and other contaminants in the raw water supply. Pre-treatment filters and softening can reduce scaling and pro-long the life of equipment. For instance, Culligan was tapped to provide a custom engineered system for an Oil Sands Project in Alberta, Canada. Our customer required ultra soft water for the steam generators in their bitumen and heavy oil recovery processes. Culligan proposed a solution including a 10’ x 40’ skid-mounted; PLC controlled four tank duplex alternative softener system producing 50 GPM influent to the steam generators. Pre-treatment filters ahead of the softener system were used to reduce sediments in the raw water supply.

Process Water Treatment

In oil recovery, exploration and production, treat-ing process water can lead to significant cost sav-ings and accelerated revenue capture. For instance, treating boiler feed water make-up with a reverse osmosis system from the Culligan Matrix Solutions arsenal can reduce dissolved solids. This will en-able the boiler to operate at more cycles of concen-tration, thus reducing the blow down and make-up water requirements. Reduced make-up and blow down results in direct energy and chemical sav-ings. Other technologies in the Culligan Matrix that could be used to treat process water include soft-ening, microfiltration, ultra-filtration, nano-filtra-tion, portable exchange deionization and continu-ous electro deionization.

Wastewater Minimization

Today, stringent local and national discharge re-quirements are creating a need for overall onsite water management and wastewater minimization. These new demands at times require water system modifications, equipment retrofits, or system replacements to enable refineries to minimize the use of water and wastewater. With our comprehensive discovery process and consultative approach, we can design a solution that meets your overall onsite water manage-ment and wastewater minimization needs.

Culligan International Overview -- Global provider of residential, com-mercial, industrial and municipal water treatment systems with comprehensive portfolio of water treatment products and services, unique products / technologies, complex problem water solutions, com-plete after-market service support, and a highly recognizable brand name with 75 years of history.
