EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

NOVEMBER 2014

In November 2014 Spain’s exports increased by 3.2% year-on-year in nominal term to 19,944.4

million euros, whereas imports grew by 2.0% to 21,499.6 million euros. In real terms, exports rose

by 4.5% as export prices fell by 1.3%, whereas imports increased by 4.3% as import prices dropped

by 2.2%.

In nominal terms on a month-on-month basis, exports and imports fell in November 2014 by 10.8%

and 12.6% respectively. With seasonally adjusted series, exports decreased by 0.2% while imports

remained stable.

Spain’s trade balance registered a deficit of 1,555.2 million euros, down from 1,759.2 million euros

deficit in November 2013. The export/import coverage ratio reached 92.8%, which is 1.1 percentage

points higher than in the same month of 2013 (91.7% in November 2013 with provisional data).

Non-energy trade surplus reached 938.3 million euros, down from 1,220.6 million euros surplus in

the same month of 2013. Energy trade deficit fell by 16.3% year-on-year to 2,493.5 million euros.

Exports to the European Union accounted for 64.7% of total exports, down from 66.2% reached in

November 2013. This fall was due to the decreasing weight in the euro area to 50.9% in November

2014 (52.5% in November 2013) since the weight of the rest of the European Union remained stable

at 13.7%. Exports to the European Union grew year-on-year by 0.8%, whereas exports to the euro

area rose by 0.2%.

Exports to non-EU countries accounted for 35.3% of total exports in November 2014 (33.8% in

November 2013), after they increased by 8.1% year-on-year. Some of the most significant rises by

region referred to exports to North America (50.9% year-on-year) and Asia (23.3% year-on-year).

The countries with major contributions to the annual rate of variation of Spain’s exports in

November 2014 (3.2%) were the United States (1.8 percentage points), Ecuador (0.6 points), Germany

(0.5 points) and Mexico (0.4 points). Conversely, the countries with the largest negative contributions

were Portugal (-2.0 points), Switzerland (-0.4 points) and Russia (-0.3 points).

Trade balance with the European Union registered in November 2014 a surplus of 687.3 million

euros (1,097.9 million in November 2013) and with the euro area a 608.7 million euros surplus (828.2

million in November 2013), confirming in both cases an uninterrupted trade surplus since January

2012. Trade deficit with the rest of the world decreased to 2,242.6 million euros (deficit of 2,857.1

million euros in November 2013). Trade balance with North America registered a 146.6 million euros

surplus in November 2014 compared to a 372.5 million deficit in the same month last year. Trade

deficit with Asia rose by 0.7% to 1,902.1 million euros and by 6.9% with Africa to 727.4 million euros

deficit. Trade balance with Oceania showed a 67.9 million euros surplus, down from a 73.6 million

surplus in the same month of the previous year.

The main exporting sectors were capital goods (this sector represented 19.8% of total exports and

increased by 1.6% year-on-year), vehicles (16.4% of total, it grew by 6.3%), food, beverages and

tobacco (16.3% of total, it increased by 2.3%) and chemical products (13.8% of total, it rose by 2.9%).

The sectors with the most positive contribution to the annual rate of variation of Spain’s exports in

November 2014 (3.2%) were vehicles (1.0 percentage points), consumption goods (0.8 points), semi-

manufactures (non-chemical) (0.6 points) and chemical products (0.4 points). The negative

contributions came from other goods (-0.6 points) and durable goods (-0.2 points). By subsectors,

the main positive contributions were those of cars and motorcycles (2.0 points), aircraft (0.7 points)

and railway transport equipment (0.5 points). On the contrary, the major negative contributions

corresponded to automotive parts and accessories (-1.0 points), road transport equipment (-0.9 points)

and ships (-0.4 points).

Among Spanish regions, the major contributions to Spanish exports’ growth were made by Andalucía

with 1.6 percentage points (10.9% of total exports, 16.8% growth), followed by País Vasco with 1.3

percentage points (9.6% of total exports, it rose by 14.6%). Cataluña´s exports (25.3% of total)

increased by 4.4%, Comunidad de Madrid’s (10.9% of total) decreased by 2.0%, Comunitat

Valenciana’s (11.3% of total) grew by 2.5%, and Galicia’s (7.4% of total) increased by 2.3%.

Compared to other geographical areas, Spain’s exports of goods increased by 3.2% in November

year-on-year, a higher increase rate than in the euro area (0.1%) and the European Union (1.3%),

whereas within the European Union, exports also grew in Germany (1.4%), France (1.2%) and

especially in the United Kingdom (8.5%). Outside the European Union, Japan’s exports expanded by

4.9% while those of the United States fell by 0.6%.

Spain’s exports from January to November 2014 amounted to 220,682.3 million euros, 2.2% higher

than in the same period of 2013. Imports were up by 5.8% year-on-year, totaling 243,332.4 million

euros. In real terms, exports increased by 3.2%, as export prices fell by 0.9%, and imports rose by

8.4%, as import prices fell by 2.4%.

Spain’s trade deficit of 22,650.1 million euros was higher than in the same period of 2013, when it

amounted to 14,125.4 million euros. The export/import coverage ratio reached 90.7%, which is 3.2

percentage points lower than in the same period of 2013 (93.9%).

Non-energy trade balance recorded a 12,899.0 million euros surplus (23,818.7 million euros surplus

in January-November 2013), whereas energy trade deficit decreased by 6.3% year-on-year to reach

35,549.1 million euros.

Exports to the European Union accounted for 63.7% of total exports in January-November 2014, up

from 62.7% in the same period of 2013. This weight rise was due to the increasing weight in the euro

area to 49.9% (49.1% in the same period of 2013) as well as in the rest of the European Union to

13.7% (13.6% in the same period of 2013). Exports to the European Union and the euro area grew

by 3.8% and 3.9% year-on-year respectively. Exports to the rest of the world accounted for 36.3% of

total exports (37.3% in the same period of 2013), decreasing by 0.4% year-on-year. Outside the

European Union, it is worth noting the increase recorded in exports to North America (4.9% of total

exports, 21.2% growth) and to Asia excluding Middle East (6.3% of total exports, 15.0% growth).

In terms of contribution to the growth of total exports (2.2%), the main Spain’s exports destinations

were the United States (which accounted for 0.8 percentage points), Germany (0.6 points), South

Korea (0.4 points) and the United Kingdom (0.3 points). Conversely, the countries with the largest

negative contributions were Switzerland (-0.3 points), Australia (-0.2 points) and Brazil (-0.2 points).

Spain’s trade surplus with the European Union and with the euro area fell to 10,996.4 million

euros and to 6,227.2 million euros respectively, down from 17,147.6 and 10,869.3 million euros surplus

reached in the same period of the previous year.

Trade deficit with the rest of the world grew by 7.6% year-on-year to reach 33,646.5 million euros.

It is worth noting that the trade balance with North America changed to a 425.9 million euros surplus

in January-November 2014 compared to a 1,249.8 million deficit in the same period last year.

Moreover, there has been a 45.2% deficit reduction with Middle East to 1,050.7 million euros and a

1.8% trade deficit reduction with Africa to 10,915.5 million.

The main exporting sectors were capital goods (20.1% of total exports, although it fell by 1.0%),

food, beverages and tobacco (15.3% of total, it grew by 4.4%), vehicles (14.9% of total, it rose by

6.0%) and chemical products (14.2% of total, it expanded by 1.3%).

The main drivers by sector of Spain’s exports growth in the period January-November 2014 were

vehicles (this sector’s exports accounted for a contribution of 0.9 percentage points to the 2.2%

increase in total exports), food, beverages and tobacco (0.7 points), consumption goods (0.6 points)

and energy (0.4 points). The negative contributions by sector came from other goods (-0.3 points)

and capital goods (-0.2 points). By subsectors, the main contributions were those of cars and

motorcycles (0.9 percentage points), other food products (0.4 points) and gas (0.4 points). On the

contrary, the major negative contributions by subsectors corresponded to aircraft (-0.6 points), specific

purpose equipment (-0.5 points) and other semi-manufactures (-0.1 points).

Among Spanish regions, those that made the major contribution to global export growth (2.2%) were

País Vasco (contribution of 0.7 percentage points, 9.3% of total exports, 7.7% growth) and Cataluña

(contribution of 0.6 points, 25.1% of total exports, 2.4% growth). Andalucía’s exports (11.0% of total)

increased by 1.2%, Comunidad de Madrid’s (11.6% of total) fell by 9.4%, Comunitat Valenciana’s

(10.2% of total) grew by 5.5%, and Galicia’s (7.5% of total) decreased by 0.6%.

Compared to other geographical areas, Spain’s exports of goods recorded a growth rate of 2.2%

year-on-year in the period January-November 2014, performing better than the euro area (1.4%) and

the European Union (0.9%), whereas within the European Union, Germany´s exports also grew (3.4%),

while those of France and the United Kingdom fell (-0.8% and -11.7% respectively). Outside the

European Union, Japan’s exports increased by 4.0% and those of the United States by 2.9%.
