Garden Hills Executive Leadership Retreat

Garden Hills Executive Leadership RetreatJune 4, 2014

Management is efficiency in climbing the ladder of success; leadership determines whether the ladder is leaning against the right wall.

Stephen Covey

A particular kind of leadership is needed at Garden Hills:

Leading for Equity and Transformation

Leading for Equality or Equity?

One of the tests of leadership is the ability to recognize a problem before it becomes an emergency.

The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between, the leader is a servant.

Max DePree

Foundational Considerations to Equity Leadership

Disrupting the status quo is necessary and courageous workOutcomes for African-American & Latino children are particularly unacceptableHistorical and current systems of oppression have destabilized communities, familiesSchools have historically served/currently serve as one of the tools of oppression

Disrupting the status quo is challenging workPersonal/Professional attacksIndividual, organizationalCritical to have supportCritical to be united not unifiedCritical to have inner strength/core values guiding your decisions and approach; otherwise fear will immobilize you and prevent you from doing the necessary work

Transformational Leadership

Garden HillsExecutive Leadership Team:A Team United

United vs. UnifiedUnitedUnifiedjoined together for a common purpose, or by common feelings.make or become united, uniform, or whole.

Great leaders are not defined by the absence of weakness, but rather by the presence of clear strengths.

John Zenger

Dominant Strength: ExecutingLeaders with dominant strength in theExecutingdomain know how to make things happen. When you need someone to implement a solution, these are the people who will work tirelessly to get it done. Leaders with a strength to execute have the ability to "catch" an idea and make it a reality. For example, one leader may excel at establishing a quality process using themes such as Deliberative or Discipline, while the next leader will use her Achiever theme to work tirelessly toward a goal. Or a leader with strong Arranger may determine the optimal configuration of people needed to complete a task.

Dominant Strength: InfluencingThose who lead byInfluencinghelp their team reach a much broader audience. People with strength in this domain are always selling the team's ideas inside and outside the organization. When you need someone to take charge, speak up, and make sure your group is heard, look to someone with the strength to influence. For example, a leader with a lot of Command or Self-Assurance may use few words, but her confidence will continue to project authority and win followers. In contrast, a leader using Communication or Woo might get people involved by helping individuals feel comfortable and connected to the issue at hand.

Dominant Strength: Relationship buildingThose who lead throughRelationship Buildingare the essential glue that holds a team together. Without these strengths on a team, in many cases, the group is simply a composite of individuals. In contrast, leaders with exceptional Relationship Building strength have the unique ability to create groups and organizations that are much greater than the sum of their parts.Within this domain, a leader with Positivity and Harmony may work hard to minimize distractions and to keep the team's collective energy high. On the other hand, a leader with Individualization might use a more targeted approach to getting people involved. Or a leader with strong Relator or Developer may be a great mentor and guide as he pushes others toward bigger and better achievements.

Dominant Strength: strategic thinkingLeaders with greatStrategic Thinkingstrengths are the ones who keep us all focused on whatcould be. They are constantly absorbing and analyzing information and helping the team make better decisions. People with strength in this domain continually stretch our thinking for the future.Within this domain, a leader using Context or Strategic might explain how past events influenced present circumstances or navigate the best route for future possibilities. Someone with strong Ideation or Input may see countless opportunities for growth based on all of the information she reviews. Or a leader drawing from his Analytical theme might help the team drill into the details of cause and effect.

SWOT AnalysisStrengths*Weaknesses*Opportunities*ThreatsStrengths (internal)Weaknesses (internal)Opportunities (external)Strengths/OpportunitiesObvious natural prioritiesWeaknesses/OpportunitiesPotentially attractive optionsThreats (external)Strengths/ThreatsEasy to defend and counterWeaknesses/ThreatsPotentially high risk

Strengths/opportunitiesThe Back to School carnivalThe RtI team provides concrete strategies teachers through open house or the traditional RtI processThe RtI team progress monitors students to collect data regarding the effectiveness of the interventionCulture/Climate has been a priority (time, energy, $$$, focus)We have selected a universal SEL curriculumBeginning partnership with Community Elements/Mental Health IntegrationHonest/accurate discipline data

Strengths/threatsEvery time a teacher calls for discipline assistance, we remove the child from the classroom and process the referral. Threat: If we dont put other interventions and supports in place and accept every referral that is written without being mindful of where it fits, it strains the systems weve put in place and undermines teacher authority. Threat: Its not my job to manage behaviorRefocus room systems are structured. Threat: It reinforces students being out of the classroomWe have a Refocus room that is located in the office. Threat: Some students like coming back to the refocus roomWe have a Refocus room. Threat: The perception of some staff is that children are rewarded for bad behaviorWe are implementing PBIS. Threat: People think that we are fully implementing when we are not. We provide support to teachers by removing children to de-escalate behavior. Threat: When we return the child de-escalated, the perception is thatWe have data systems. Threat: People are uncomfortable looking at data and this makes it difficult for them to own the dataLeadership team is new. Threat: We are susceptible to division and manipulationWe have put grade level teams strategically. Threat: Grade level teams may be dysfunctionalWe have a district student Code of Conduct that outlines Level 1, 2, and 3 behaviors. Threat: The Code of Conduct does not align with our belief statementWe have hired new staff who we feel align to our school beliefs. Threat: That they end up not living them

Weaknesses/opportunitiesTeachers write a lot of referrals. Opportunity: Get to the root cause of why they are writing the referrals. Teachers dont understand the difference between Level 1 and Level 2 referrals. Opportunity: Revisit Level 1 and Level 2 in professional developmentInconsistent, non-aligned, and non-restorative use of card systems, CICO, and clip systems dont align with belief systems. Opportunity: Come together as a staff to review research and analyze for alignment to belief statement, highlight parallel to how we like to be treated as adultsData collection is inconsistent. Opportunity: Developing a stronger system for data collectionWar stories (even well-meaning) reinforce the bad reputation of our school. Opportunity: To intentionally develop a counter-narrative, to provide focus to the future, to intentionally develop momentum Fragmented staff (not aligned along vision/mission/beliefs). Opportunity: Unite staff along aligned vision/mission/beliefsClassroom management skills are weak in 50-75% of classrooms. Opportunity: Strengthening classroom management practices through professional development

Weaknesses/threatsGeneral low level of reflection among staff. Threat: Without reflection, there is no/limited growthLoss of identity is required to conform to how weve framed education/schooling. Threat: Lack of connection; refusing to do schoolThere is a historical association in some of our childrens/families minds that connects school and prison; both as systems of oppression. Threat: Lack of connection; refusing to do schoolThere is a lack of connection between some students and staff because of historical and current racial/socio-economic realities. Threat: Without connection, there is no trust, further exacerbating poor learning/discipline outcomesRigid sense of positions. Threat: Being unable to flexibly adapt to building need

The very essence of leadership is that you have to have a vision. Its got to be a vision you articulate clearly and forcefully on every occasion. You cant blow an uncertain trumpet.

Reverend Theodore Hesburgh
