Welcome to the October issue of Exclusive.

Spring is here along with warmer temperatures, making it one of my favorite times of the year. In the local property market, the volume of properties traded continues to grow and we are still very much in a seller’s market. There is considerable competition between buyers in the $250,000 - 450,000 price range. If you are interested to know what your property is worth, I would suggest you call us today for an obligation-free market appraisal as this seller’s market won’t last forever.

In this edition of Exclusive Emma Gilmour races us through her career as a rally driver, we have a sneak peek at the Rosary exhibition at Lure, and Spelt Bakery on Highgate show us how to create Red Velvet cupcakes.

Kind regards,Mark MillerGeneral Manager

Aiming for the top

In New Zealand in recent years, Emma Gilmour has earned the respect of the rally fraternity as a driver of considerable ability and one to beat since entering the sport in 2001, when she gained a sixth place out of ninety-six cars and won her class in her first one-day tarmac rally. “I love the sport. The buzz I get driving a car as fast as possible over blind crests and through blind corners on a surface that is forever changing is simply addictive. When it all goes right it feels like you are dancing with your car,” Emma said. Always fast, usually there at the finish, Emma admits to being a very competitive person by nature and it was a link up with a new co-driver from Perth, Australia, Glenn Macneall that provided the incentive for her to

At the end of the recent 2012 Brian Green Group, NZ National Rally Championship season Dunedin driver Emma Gilmour was runner-up to Richard Mason for the third successive year. It’s not easy for any female to get to the top in any form of usually male-dominated motorsport and rallying is no exception, with just a handful at the top level internationally.

become a top competitive rally driver. “I was part of the organising committee for the Otago Rally in 2001 and my Dad (Alistair) had usually co-driven for me. The committee wanted a course car – a Zero car and I thought I could do that. I guess I should have told them I hadn’t driven much on gravel before then,” Emma laughed.

It was to be a turning point in her rally career which up until then had consisted mainly of tarmac rallies, local car club hill-climb and gymkhana events in her cousin Gwynn’s Mitsubishi Evo III in which she had originally co-driven for him in the 1990s. “My dad suggested I get a co-driver with more experience on gravel who could teach me

and I was friends with Glenn Macneall from Perth, Australia. I jokingly said to him would you come over and co-drive for me?”

A professional rally co-driver in the WRC series, Glenn agreed to come over and be her co-driver after seeing her first rally results. Now her life-partner and also business partner in their Dunedin Suzuki dealership since October 2011, Glenn showed a lot of faith in his new driver by taking on the role, especially after a tongue-in cheek query by Emma just before the start. “We were on the way to the first stage when I said to Glenn, how do I drive on this gravel?” She admitted that things were a “bit hairy” at first, but by the end of

the first day, things weren’t going too badly and they had set some competitive times by the end of the day. “It was through Glenn’s encouragement and the fact that he thought I had a lot of natural ability that he encouraged me to do it to a level where I could get good sponsorship and especially being a female, I had something different to offer,” she said. Her first rally was an international rally out of Rotorua, part of the Asia Pacific series which some thought was being a bit ambitious. The end result proved to be the right move in gaining the all-important sponsorship, driving her Mitsubishi Evo III. “Glenn’s thinking was that it (the rally) was going to have international exposure and media coverage and if you did a good job, then you had more chance of getting sponsorship. It was a bit of a gamble. We could easily have sunk as easily as we swum. We started out 44th and ended up 16th in the Evo III, so it all really started there and it paid off.”

After a short spell in a Mitsubishi Evo VI, the pair purchased a Subaru in 2006 and began what was a very successful association with Subaru New

Zealand. “Since 2006 I have had a great group of long-term dedicated sponsors including Vantage Aluminium Joinery as part of our team. Their support is what enables us to be able to follow our dreams,” she said. Skilled preparation of any rally car to be fully competitive was essential to being a successful, top competitor. “I suppose it has been our weakness I guess, as Glenn or I are not mechanical, so we have had to rely on others. My father used to prepare my car when I first started, but it’s almost a full time job keeping the car at the level of preparation it needs, so we have been lucky to have many good people help us over the years.”

With their business based in Dunedin the aim was to keep the rally car preparation more in-house and make a stronger team. Emma acknowledged

their great local support. Ideally, she would love to be a professional rally driver, but with business commitments and the cost of competing at that level it would be a difficult move. “I still feel I haven’t reached my full potential. I’m realistic and I know that I just can’t put my life on hold and go overseas chasing a dream with a business to run, but I still hope to get the opportunity to get an overseas drive.”

Acknowledged internationally as the fastest female rally driver, she is still waiting for a sponsor who will take her on-board. “We had talks with Volkswagen last year. They really wanted to see a female in one of their cars, but then they changed their focus. It’s hard because I get the recognition because I’m female, but it’s not just because I’m a female. I’m just as good as the boys here, but in Europe I think they don’t recognise that yet because I haven’t been over there driving enough.” A moot point emphasized at this year’s Rally New Zealand where the pair annihilated the European competition in their class of car. As with any motorsport there was always the potential for

things to go wrong. “I’ve had a few crashes, but I guess I have a greater awareness now of safety. Roll cages for example. A lot of work goes into them and you make sure you have the best safety equipment. You don’t take any unnecessary risks.” A re-think for the six-round, 2013 rally championship would see a fresh approach from the Gilmour team with the Otago Rally first up, a rally she readily acknowledged as her favourite rally. “I would really like to win the Otago Rally,” she said.

Glenn in the meantime has a continuing commitment to co-drive a Skoda in the Asia Pacific series with Indian driver, Gaurav Gill, with rounds in Japan in September and China in November. Nominated by Motorsport NZ in 2011 to be a member of the FIA Women in Motorsport Commission, Emma maintained regular European contacts but focussed on New Zealand where she enjoyed the support she got locally. “I guess it’s good to have a female role model. It’s not just the gender thing. It is a tough sport to get into anyway,” she said.

Emma also enjoys circuit motor-racing and really enjoyed a few endurance races she had taken part in but with the commitment to rallying, there wasn’t much time for other forms of motorsport. Physical fitness was also a prime requirement for rallying with time spent in the gym a necessity to keep up with rallying pace and demands. Emma’s focus in 2013 was to finally win the national championship and with the plans the pair have made it could be their year.

Lureme in...After relocating to Dunedin in 1988, Ann Culy took a jewellery-making night class and discovered her love for the art. Ann started her gallery, Lure in lower Stuart Street, in 1995 with a very small group of jewellers and now sixteen years on it is still thriving.

Ann Culy started her artistic journey studying Fine Arts in the seventies, focusing on sculpture and making lost wax castings in bronze, and trying to fit in amongst the conceptual art culture. In 1988, Ann moved from Christchurch to Dunedin, and a trip to the dentist ended with Ann taking away some modeling tools for wax, and a temptation to join the jewellery-making night class herdentist had spoken enthusiastically about. Ann joined up and was instantly taken with the personal expression, intensity and people-oriented nature of the art.

Ann spent a few years at Fluxus Contemporary Jewellery, experiencing working with others in a gallery situation, and discovered how much she enjoyed working in a professional environment away from the home workshop. In 1995 Ann decided she wanted to make a gallery and workspace with her own personal stamp on it, and started Lure with a very small group of jewellers. Lure has allowed Ann to learn a lot about her style of selling and how much she enjoys running a business. Lure is a great mix of working alongside others and meeting new people each day in the gallery.

Ann’s love for Dunedin is always evident describing Dunedin as the ‘perfect-sized small city’. Lure has grown in leaps and bounds since 1995, enabling Ann to be able to concentrate on the job of running the gallery. The building Lure is located in has a real sense of a nest of jewellers, all being able to feed off each other. Lure’s most popular items with the contemporary jewellery demographic of Dunedin are brooches, mostly for good winter coats, and rings. Rings are a big draw card to lure people in to the gallery as the 25 or more represented jewellers provide a huge variety of pieces to explore and discover.

In association with the Otago Festival of the Arts, opening on 3rd October at Lure is Rosary - an exciting group exhibition featuring new work by invited New Zealand contemporary jewellers. Eighteen artists have been invited to interpret and respond to the concept of the Rosary. The resulting works are varied in terms of material, technique and design but all convey some personal meaning whether devotional, meditative, mysterious, historical, confrontational or political.

Victoria Mcintosh takes the rosary into thedomestic world, creating a piece from burnt

wooden beads and a charred black clothes peg. The resulting burnt offering nicely subverts the familiar devotional rosary, making a work that is as oppressive as it is beautiful.

In ‘Beads of Contemplation’ Rainer Beneke offers a work that is fluid and tactile. Amber and silver beads threaded onto a black cord are free to move, inviting interaction between the wearer and the bracelet. These beads create a meditative quality - the act of holding the bracelet and touching the beads, gently moving them along the cord, encourages contemplation. The fact that no two beads are alike increases the sensory nature of the interaction - as if we are being invited to learn the meaning of the work through touch.

Ann Culy’s silken thread, silver and pure gold neckpiece introduces a limited colour palette - of black and gold - to create a work that is rich in contrast. Here we feel the softness of the cord, the frayed, ‘open’ ends which form a sensuous counterpart to the tightly plaited length. The arrangement of hard metals - silver and gold - create punctuation points along the neckpiece - pauses in motion which can be shifted as if re-arranging time.

Auckland based jeweller Pauline Bern uses pink plastic coated nikau seeds and silver to give a New Zealand take on the European rosary. Chris Charteris creates a Pacific Rosary using mother-of-pearl, vau and paint. Here the symbols of Christianity are applied to the traditional form of the breast-plate and we are invited to contemplate the exchange between Pacific and European cultures.

While Bern and Charteris reference indigenous cultures through their work, Elfi Spiewack makes a poignant statement about the Canterbury earthquakes. Broken crockery gathered from quake-damaged houses interrupts the smooth flow of regular silver forms, reminding us of the ways in which the ordered lives of Christchurch’s inhabitants were destroyed.

Fragility - this time in the form of a small boat bobbing at sea - features in the work of Barry Clarke while John Z Robinson creates a long rosary from inter-locking silver discs on fine black thread. Holding Robinson’s intricate work provokes wonder as the pieces ‘tinkle’ like crystals on a chandelier.

The pieces in Rosary are imaginative and thoughtful. The tactile quality of jewellery and the importance of touch is highlighted through the various responses of the artists.

Rosary will be exhibited at Lure, 3 - 13 October. Lure is located on the first floor of 130 Stuart Street, Dunedin. Phone (03) 477 5559 for more information.

Ravensbourne School

The school is very lucky to have its own swimming pool, which is used as much as possible. This year it will be open from Monday 12th November to Wednesday 13th December 2012 and reopen next year Tuesday 29th January to Thursday 6th March 2013. The community are welcome to use the pool and keys can be obtained from the office and cost $40 - $10 of this will be returned when the keys are returned at the end of the season. Having their own pool means that as well as daily swimming, the school can also provide the ‘Skills to Swim’ programme for years 4-6 at a much-reduced rate.

Last year Ravensbourne School joined the Enviroschools Programme and became members of the Heart Foundation, Healthy Choices Programme. This works well with the school focus on Sustainability. Through focus on sustainability, children will learn about how best to live harmoniously with their environment both as an individual and as a family. Enviroschools

encourages the refocus on Science and the Nature of Science. This is filtering through all the curriculum areas. One of the changes made since the membership with The Healthy Choices Programme has been in the canteen where the school ensures that the food available for the children complies with the Heart Foundation guidelines thereby getting the Heart Foundation’s tick of approval.

Ravensbourne School had a Community Open Day on March 2nd with displays by Ravensdown Fertiliser, Highland Dancers, Emergency Services and Pool Lifesaving. Ravensbourne School won tickets to see the Cricket test between South Africa and New Zealand in Dunedin earlier this year, with all of the Year 4, 5 and 6 children going along. A highlight for term 2 on Thursday afternoons were the American Fullbright Scholar scientists, who have been volunteering to teach Science in Schools. The children have been in groups Physics (flight), Geology (tectonic plates), Biology (plants and

animals). On 27th July Ravensbourne School celebrated their ‘Breakfast for Champions’. They invited several special guests; Mayor Dave Cull, Ravensdown Works manager Tony Gray, players from Otago Razorbacks, Football South, Southern Steel Netball and Oceana Gold Nuggets. Tony Gray presented a wonderful box of new embroidered sunhats to the school on behalf of Ravensdown. Mayor Dave Cull officially opened the Breakfast and lit the Olympic flame. Each child donated three items of non-perishable food to the representative of Presbyterian Support, Marilyn Ross.

The school visited Southern Clams earlier this term, trying clams and clam chowder and seeing how the clams get washed, packed and boxed. The -18 degree freezer was a bit too cold for some of the children!

\\ Tony Rice

Purely abstract

This quotation from Leonardo’s ‘Treatise on Painting’ has inspired Wanaka-based artist Tony Rice to throw off the shackles of traditional art and to explore the accidental, either as a point of imaginative departure, or as a means of obtaining finished results.

Careful not to allow his imagery or techniques to become sterile, Tony Rice works in different media, in various sizes, often avoiding traditional painters’ tools.

Although he paints in a purely abstract mode, dealing with shapes and forms,

“It is not to be despised in my opinion, if, after gazing fixedly at a spot on the wall, the coals in a grate, the clouds, the flowing stream, if one remembers some of their aspects: and if you look at them carefully you will discover some quite admirable inventions. Of these the genius of the painter may take full advantage, to compose battles of animals and of men, of landscapes or monsters, of devils and other fantastic things which bring you honour.” - Leonardo da Vinci

colours and textures, in terms of what they actually are, not what they represent, it is during the process of selection that he creates pictures rich in echoes of land, sea and sky.

This Liverpool-born artist, now living and working in Wanaka, studied at the Manchester Regional College of Art, taught in England and emigrated to New Zealand.

Tony’s work has been exhibited in major galleries in the U.K., Europe and New Zealand and is available via selected

representatives throughout New Zealand.

His New Zealand lifestyle means Tony is able to indulge his two major passions; painting during the summer, and instructing on the ski slopes during the winter.

You can find Tony in his studio at 61 Lakeside Road, Wanaka or by phoning (03) 443 9007.

Lightly coat the vege in the bowl with olive oil and season with both salt and pepper to taste. Place on a baking tray lined with baking paper and spread the vege in one layer on the tray. You may have to use more than one tray. Roast in the oven till golden brown and crispy on the out side. Let cool for 30 minutes and add the chopped parsley, red capsicum, and lemon juice. The Boaboa Food Company is located on the Wanaka lake front, open since June 2012, serving customers seven days a week from 10am - 10pm. The Boaboa Food Company is “all things food”, primarily a fish & chip, boutique burger and fried chicken takeaway shop that prides itself in making all of our product from scratch. Our fish is sourced fresh to the door, our batter is light, crispy and golden brown and all fish items are served with our homemade tartare sauce and a wedge of lemon.

The burgers at Boaboa range from the delicious but simple Boa burger, which is 180 grams of prime beef ground to order for us, confit garlic aioli, tomato chilli jam, shredded iceberg lettuce, slices of tomato and a fresh-to-order onion ring all bound in a soft but crispy bun. On the other end of the spectrum we have the decadent slow-roasted pork belly with crisp coleslaw, and soy sesame emulsion. Our fried chicken is made fresh with our seasoned flour and fried to GBD (Golden Brown & Delicious).

As well as offering hot food to-go, we offer salads from our cold cabinet, which can be anything from a roasted beetroot, red onion and feta to a shredded beef, rice noodle and bok choy. We also offer cooked vacuum-packed morsels such as slow roasted forequarter of lamb, winter vegetable lasagna and pork belly portions. In the future Boaboa plans to add a juice, smoothie and ice smoothie section to the menu.

\\ Wanaka Transport and Toy Museum

A treasure chest of transport and toysLake Wanaka - the home of New Zealand’s National Transport & Toy Museum. This fascinating collection houses one of the largest private collections in the world. The museum is the result of one man’s dream and 50 years of dedicated collection and preservation of over 50,000 pieces from the past.

The National Transport & Toy Museum is the Southern Hemisphere’s largest private collection open to the public. It is one man’s dream, a dream that has taken over 50 years to collect.

The owner, Mr Gerald Rhodes, started with International Harvester, and then went on to establish his own car and truck-wrecking business. These businesses allowed him to be in the right places to pick up “bargains” but it also required many years at auctions, flea markets and garage sales, as well as responding to newspaper adverts and word-of-mouth tip-offs to bring together a fascinating range of items.

Mr Rhodes lives in Christchurch but Wanaka was chosen because the dry Central Otago climate (no sea breeze and low humidity) helps preserve the machinery. From choosing the site in 1988, the first building did not go up until October 1994. Many obstacles had to be crossed, but with great tenacity, the Museum started to take shape.

In 1995 the Second Building “The Hangar” was built looking like the original hangars used in the 1940s and old hangar doors from Christchurch were used to give the building authenticity. The Museum opened to the public on December 26 1995, making the dream a reality. In April 2004 a 1440m² building, “The Fire Station” was built.

December 2005 saw a 2000m² building “Hangar 2” to house military, planes and motorbikes.

The Museum is currently curated by Jason and Debbie Rhodes. They have kept the museum as an informal Pandora’s box of surprises. Visitors (both local and international) return year after year to discover more of the delights of the collection and most cannot believe the extent of the collection. Some visitors have said they believe the collection is the largest in the world of its type.

With the love of collecting things, the museum has a variety of exhibits that has something for the whole family. There are over 50,000 items on display and new items are always being added. The Museum has the largest number of toys on public display in New Zealand.

Since the Museum has opened another avenue has arisen - people coming through and finding the Wanaka Transport & Toy Museum is the place they would like their collection or vehicle to be, so are willing to sell or donate it to the Museum. Nearly all the toys have been purchased in New Zealand, mainly from the Christchurch/Canterbury Region. About 5% of the Vehicles are from overseas, 10% from the North Island and the rest from the South Island of New Zealand. The collection is financed by the owner and gate receipts.

The Rhodes are actively restoring and buying vehicles and toys; there are still over a 100 vehicles in need of restoration. The majority of vehicles are restored off-site - mainly in Christchurch and with a plan to restore at least 3 vehicles a year, restoration will be on-going.

The transport collection boasts rare and unusual aircraft, cars, trucks, motorcycles, fire appliances, military vehicles and tractors. A nostalgic selection of toys has something to fascinate the child in everyone, such as clockwork and battery-powered toys, porcelain dolls, teddy bears, pedal cars and money boxes.

There is large outdoor space and a playground area for children with pedal toys and a picnic area that patrons are welcome to use. Also on site is an award winning Boutique Brewery - Wanaka Beerworks.

Willowridge WanakafestWanaka’s annual spring carnival has been held since 1984, formerly known as Snowfest and celebrated the end of the ski season. Relaunched as Wanakafest in 2003, Willowridge Wanakafest this Labour Weekend is set to be bigger and better than ever.

The Wanakafest Community Trust is a Charitable Trust that exists to host Wanaka’s Community Festival. The Trust aims to identify and fund development projects that benefit the Wanaka Community. Every 2-3 years the festival incorporates a major fundraising event, such as the 2009 Stonewood Homes House Build. Funds from the festival fundraising activity will go back into Wanaka. This year the Trust have supported and helped build the Wanaka Springs Water Feature Project in conjunction with the Wanaka Springs Community Trust on the Lake Front. The official opening will be held at the end of the festivities, at 6.30pm on Sunday 21 Otcober. In 2011, after being the festival’s main sponsor since

2009, Allan Dippie and Tony Brown of Willowridge Developments Ltd have come on board as our Festival Partner, offering long-term financial support and they are an integral part to the future success of the festival.

The Lake Wanaka Wine and Food Fest is a major event of the weekend, to be held on Saturday 20 October. Stalls are filling up fast with talented local producers looking to tantalise the tastebuds of festival-goers with a great selection of wines, beers and foods. Jax Hamilton (pictured above) will be coming to join the festivities of the Lake Wanaka Wine and Food Fest, running a

Master Class on Pembroke Park. This year the new “Celebrate Local Signature Dish” concept is being launched, giving local restaurants the opportunity to showcase local chefs and producers, by creating a signature dish or dishes on their menu, made from locally-grown produce, and paired with a local wine or beer.

Anna Coddington, Jody Direen, Anna van Reil, Liv McBride, Calico and many more will be making up the musical lineup for the weekend!

Willowridge Wanakafest will be held 18-21 October, see www.wanakafest.co.nz for more information.

Strong purchaser activity is prevalent in the Wanaka market with buyers from New Zealand and Australia entering into serious negotiation with genuine sellers. Residential dwellings under $500,000 and over $1,000,000 are meeting steady demand and vacant residential sections ranging from $100,000 to over $1,000,000 are selling to purchasers who are looking to build as soon as possible. All of this positive activity now finds the market very short of listings. A great time to be placing your property on the market with Edinburgh Realty.
