Excitement mounts for the 2012 Golden Mount Festival

Since officially commencing in 1977, Mount Morgan’s iconic Golden Mount Festival has seen the former mining town come alive each year, as thousands of locals and visitors alike rally together to celebrate Mount Morgan and its heritage through an action packed three- day festival program.

Well get ready all, because the iconic local event is on again in just a matter of days, featuring a spectacular line up sure to not disappoint.

Event Coordinator, Jordana Aston says the 35th annual Golden Mount Festival is set to include all of its annual favourites, and so much more.

“The 2012 Golden Mount Festival is definitely going to be something to enjoy, with three entire days of fun for the whole family.”

“We have planned a line up for all ages, including all of the festival’s usual favourites such as Saturday’s street festivities, Sunday’s Rodeo and Monday’s Big Dam Fun Day, with a few extras added to the amusement.”

The 2012 Golden Mount Festival will kick start the celebrations next Thursday evening, with a Meet and Greet held at the Mount Morgan Railway Museum (see page 3 for more details).

Saturday’s celebrations will commence at 8:45am in Morgan Street; featuring a full day of amusement, including street markets, live entertainment, amusement rides, the street procession and the new addition of Classic Auto Display. The day also provides opportunity to take home some cash, with the Junior and Senior Dig 4 Gold Competitions, the iconic Running of the Cutter Race and the Ute Muster.

Saturday’s event also coincides with celebrations of two major milestones in the local area; the 125th birthday for the Mount Morgan Central State Primary School, and the 100th Anniversary for Mount Morgan High.

Official celebrations for both events will take place next Saturday (further details provided on page 4). And for those eager to celebrate their former school years, a get together will be held at the Mount Morgan School of Arts from 7pm. Article continues page 4.

Let’s do it!!!! Have our town looking its very best for the many visitors, most returning to their home town, for the Festival/Centenary week-end. Get out the mowers and attack the yards, clean up streets and parks and give your neighbour or friend a hand if they are not in a good physical state to do so. Make this a BIG Mount Morgan effort and enjoy the Pride you will feel. Think Clean – Be Tidy that is all it takes.

Seventy five years ago due to cyclonic winds an aircraft on its way from Brisbane to Lismore and Sydney crashed in thick jungle in the McPherson Ranges on the Lamington Plateau. It has been recorded as the Stinson airplane disaster. For 10 days the wreckage went undetected but 3 survivors had battled all the elements. One was badly hurt, the second unhurt and the third sadly died falling down a waterfall while trying to find help.

Due to a natural bushman who had extensive knowledge of the area and the urgency to find the wreck this story would now end but for the skill, determination and almost physical exhaustion of Bernard O’Reilly - he found the plane and the two surviving persons in very thick bushland.

One survivor, John Proud had a compound fracture and bones protruding from his black leg. O’Reilly thought he was too late to save him. The other survivor Joe Binstead had carried water every day for Proud. O’Reilly left the two men with food etc. and went for help. After much organization and difficulty getting a clearing a Doctor and help returned to the site crash and rescued both men.

John Proud was manager of Peko Mines and later Chairman of the Board of Peko-Wallsend from 1960 – 1978. Of course as Chairman he visited Mount Morgan many times and was always a very courteous and likeable person and had a great soft spot for Mount Morgan. In 1978 he became Sir John Proud for his exceptional work in his various careers. Even at 80 years of age he continued his education. For a man who nearly lost his life at 29 it is wonderful to think he played such an important role in the history of Mount Morgan. What a remarkable man.

Think Clean – Be Tidy ... a thousand visitors will be looking.

They say that a great friend shares in both the good times and the bad...

Keeping this adage in mind, there is no denying that local resident, Helen Devenish could be considered one of the greatest.

The countdown is on for Helen, who has decided to lop her locks next week in support of friends currently battling leukaemia.

Furthermore, Helen is also aiming to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation; contributing funds to assist continued cancer research and support.

“A number of family members have had cancer, and a couple of my friends have recently been diagnosed.” Helen said.

“It is such a difficult time for those diagnosed and also for their family and friends.”

“One of my friends from up North is currently undergoing chemotherapy.

“She has just lost all of her hair from the treatment; after speaking with her, I began to think of what I could do to support her more and put a smile on her face.

“I decided that I would shave my hair off and surprise her, and also raise some funds for the leukaemia foundation at the same time.”

The spirited local will be around the area next week, asking for donations for the Leukaemia Foundation. A money tin will also be located at the Arts and Crafts Stall (by Carol Stock) during the Golden Mount Festival for anyone interested in donating funds.

Helen will be brave and do the shave at 11am next Friday, May the 4th, at Colleen’s Hair Salon. All are welcome to come along on the morning.

Mount Morgan Railway Museum gets ready for the Golden Moun

In 1898 the railway line from Rockhampton to Mount Morgan was built, and now adays the Mount Morgan Railway station houses the museum that showcases the important role that rail had on the history and development of Mount Morgan.

Mount Morgan State School is celebrating 125 years and the High School is celebrating 100 years, and the Mount Morgan Railway Museum is getting in on the action and is providing an opportunity for residents and tourists alike to come and meet new friends.

Come to Mount Morgan Railway Museum’s pre Golden Mount Festival celebrations – Meet and Greet. Held on Thursday, 3 May 2012 at 6.30pm, this event will give you the opportunity to kick start the weekend festivities, catch up with old friends and make new ones. Tickets are $20 per head and bookings are recommended.

Rockhampton Regional Council’s Chair of Community Development and Customer Service Committee, Councillor Rose Swadling is encouraging everyone to attend this great event.

“This will really be a great opportunity for old students who are in town for the school celebrations to get together and reminisce on old times, and for tourists who are in town for the Golden Mount Festival to see the local history at its best and really engage with those who lived in the area,” said Cr Swadling

“There will be some great entertainment at the Mount Morgan Railway Museum Meet and Greet,” said Cr Swadling.

“Live music will be on the station platform, and there will be amazing creations of Wearable Art by Julie Thornton.”

Julie Thornton is a local Rockhampton Artist who is passionate about her chosen art form: wearable art. Julie has exhibited in a number of galleries locally and throughout Australia and New Zealand and her display at the Meet and Greet will be a great addition for attendees.

Mount Morgan Railway Museum is providing residents and tourists the opportunity to also experience the Museum on Sunday 6 May. Open from 10am to 1pm, and just $2 entry fee for residents over the age of 14 the Mount Morgan Railway Museum is a great family day out and offers great value for money. See the progress of the restoration of the Hunslet Steam Engine while you are there.

At the Mount Morgan Railway Museum you can look through the displays, partake in the children’s activities, enjoy a sausage sizzle, or enjoy the Fettler Trolley Rides for $2.50 per person.

It has been one hundred years and over 7,000 student enrolments since the Mount Morgan State High School officially opened its doors.

Today, a centenary on, the area continues to draw a crowd; with Saturday May 5 in particular set to be no exception.

The countdown is on for hundreds of former Mount Morgan High Students, eager to return to their former stomping grounds to take part in the school’s official Centenary Celebrations.

With just one week remaining until the big bash, final preparations for the Centenary Celebrations are underway, with the following updates provided for the anniversary’s line-up:

Official celebrations for Saturday:Gates open at 9am, with entrance from Dee Street, to the Multi-Purpose Area (top basketball court). On arrival, attendees will be able to collect a lanyard for identification purposes (as we all know, faces change over many years.)

The official ceremony will commence at 10am, and continue for approximately one hour; welcoming guests, official speeches and the cutting of the Centenary Cake. programs will be provided on the morning; listing the entirety of the morning’s events.

The present senior class of the school will be assisting as host, hostess, school tour guides, register attendants, and will form part of the choir to render the School Song in the official section.

Two classrooms have been set aside with memorabilia and inspection can be made on the day or throughout the previous week from 10am till midday and also the same time on Sunday 6th.

Souvenirs will be available for purchase on the day and at the School on the Wednesdays from 1.30 till 2.30. Souvenirs comprise tee shirts, photo frames, coasters, ties, stubby holders and of course the Centenary Book.

Officially this section of the celebrations will conclude at 1pm to allow all visitors to enjoy the highlights of the Golden Mount Festival. No doubt the chatter and happy atmosphere of greeting old friends will last the entire week end.

Evening Centenary Celebrations:The evening celebrations will commence at the School of Arts at 7pm. where some interesting items by former past pupils will be presented, along with some favourites performed by Solid Gold. Again, it is centred mainly on re-union of friends and enjoyment. A bar will be operating; coffee tea etc also available and food supplied by the Gracemere Lions Club, on sale in the adjacent grounds.

Further information:For further details on the Centenary, please contact Kev Crawford on: [email protected] or phone the Mount Morgan State High School on: 49 12 55 55.

6ANZAC Day Tribute ANZAC Day Tribute ANZAC Day Tribute ANZAC Day Tribute ANZAC Day Tribute ANZAC Day Tribute ANZAC Da

ANZAC Day, April 25 is recognised as an important occasion throughout the country each year; seeing thousands band together to commemorate the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand Forces, and to also pay special respects to all of the Nation’s men and women who have served and fallen in conflicts and peacemaking operations.

For local resident, Del Doyle, the day marks an extremely significant time, with a number of her immediate family members in her thoughts particularly during this time each year.

Delving into Del’s family history, it is evident that a large portion is entrenched in Australian Service: beginning with her grandfather serving in World War I, two uncles, serving in Kokoda; her uncle, Joe Young, serving in Japan (1948- 1949); two brothers, Allan and Owen, serving in Vietnam and her son, Private Derek Doyle, serving in East Timor.

In recognition of ANZAC Day, this issue of the Argus sees tribute made to Del’s brothers, Owen Gregory Young and the late Allan Roy Young; returned servicemen and former Mount Morgan residents:

Allan Roy Young (Ozzie) was born in Mount Morgan on the 3rd of October 1948.

Around the age of 18, Allan set off for New Zealand on a working holiday, where he would spend less than two years before being drafted for service.

Allan’s number was called in the Australian Draft in 1968; resultantly requested to return to Australia for National Service. Successfully negotiating with the Government at the time, Allan was granted permission to join the New Zealand Army; a member of V4/ 6RAR.

Allan left for Malaya in 1968, touring Terendak Camp, followed by Vietnam.

It was during his service in Vietnam that Allan was joined by his younger brother, Owen.

Like Allan, Owen grew up in the local area; born in Mount Morgan on the 10th of May, 1950, and also like his older brother, he left for Vietnam at the age of 20 when he was drafted for National Service.

Owen began his tour in Vietnam in 1970; a member of 3TPIFD SQN RAE.

The year of 1972 saw both of the brothers return home from service, before moving on to other areas; Allan heading back to New Zealand and Owen to Northern Australia.

Allan returned to his homeland of Australia a number of times throughout the years, before his unexpected death at the age of 58.

His final trip to Australia was spent enjoying quality time with Owen in the Northern Territory (where Owen continues to reside today). Allan passed away a year later in New Zealand.

This ANZAC Day, let us pay tribute to all of our current and former servicemen and servicewomen.

LEST WE FORGET.

News from Safe and Confident Living Group News from Safe andNews from Safe and Confident Living Group News from Safe and

Last week the Safe & Confident Living Social Group had a lovely really relaxing bus trip. Our first stop was Joskeleigh Museum with its history of life around the community and the school. For those of you who weren’t with us we would have to say that we experienced the best morning tea ever with more than we could eat and everything that was presented was home-made. It was a credit to the volunteers.

From Joskeleigh we went to Keppel Sands Hotel and dined on the huge deck out the back and had a delicious roast meal followed by desert with tea and coffee. Another great feed. We felt like bears ready to go into hibernation. On the way home we called in to St Christopher’s Chapel, believed to be the only one of its kind in the world. The work was supervised by two Protestant Chaplains, a Roman Catholic Padre, and a Jewish Rabbi and was carried out by men of the 542 Engineers Ship and Shore Battalion in 1943. The church is open air and non-denominational services were held in it throughout the American “occupation” which, during its peak period involved seventy thousand men. It was and is well worth the visit.

Our next trip is to be on Thursday June 14th: Baralaba Historical Village for morning tea and Myella Farm-Stay for lunch. For further details please phone: Margaret Hoehne on 4938 1705 or Andrea de Vries on 4930 7324.

The new office for Safe & Confident Living is now at 40 Central Street. Drop in if you see the car there and we can have a chat and cuppa. Article supplied.

Making a cuppa is certainly one way to make a difference. This was definitely the case for the dozens of locals who headed to the Mount Morgan QCWA Hall last fortnight, raising funds for cancer research and prevention through the QCWA’s annual Big Cuppa for Cancer.

Held as part of the nationwide fundraiser - Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, around 30 locals took part in the event, enjoying a line up of live entertainment provided by the Bouldercombe Singers, activities and games, morning tea, and of course a cuppa, or two.

The event also featured talks from guest speakers Noelene Crone; Specialist Outpatients Clinics worker for Rockhampton Hospital, and Margaret Laughton, member of CWA Gracemere Branch and Boudlercombe Singers. The morning’s discussions highlighted the importance of regular examinations for cancer, and the need for both men and women to be aware of individual symptoms and seek available services.

The yearly fundraiser proved another hit for the local QCWA Committee, with a total of $468 raised on the day. The funds will be donated to the Cancer Council, in aim of assisting continued work in cancer research, prevention, education and support services.

In recognition of Breast Cancer research, a competition was held for ‘Best Pink Outfit’. Winners for ‘best pink outfits’: Julie Whittaker (second place) and Sandra Norman (first place) enjoy a cuppa for the annual fundraiser.

Rockhampton Regional Council Mayoral and Division 5 Candidates discussed their views and aspirations for the Mount Morgan area last Saturday, at the local Candidates Forum held at the Mount Morgan School of Arts.

The afternoon saw around 50 local residents in attendance, taking the opportunity to hear and query the thoughts of the respective 2012 Candidates.

The forum was kicked off with discussions by Mayoral Candidates, outlining policies and priorities for the future. The forum welcomed four of the five respective Mayoral Candidates, including Mayor Brad Carter, Mr Dominic Doblo, Mr Lea Taylor and Mr Tim Griffin, with apologies from Mrs Margaret Strelow, who was unable to attend due to a prior engagement.

Individual discussions were followed by questions from the floor, at times establishing grounds for serious debate and seeing the segment run into overtime.

Public discussion focused on many facets surrounding Mount Morgan, including Council debt, local business future, water permanency, residential rates, the Mount Morgan Mine and Dee River potential, just to name a few.

A quick recess for a cuppa put everyone back in free form, and was followed up by individual discussion from Division 5 Candidates.

The second half of the forum welcomed Councillor Cherie Rutherford, Mr Alan Cornick, Mr Brad Keyworth and Mr Jaime Williams to discuss their aspirations and commitments to the local area.

Discussion from the floor saw all candidates indicate their personal thoughts on the strong potential for Mount Morgan’s future, socially and economically; including discussion on youth based programs, tourism development and area revitalisation.

The forum was facilitated by Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc. (MMPAD), with local resident Mr Peter Gerber as the afternoon’s adjudicator.

Mount Morgan Promotion and Development would like to sincerely thank each of the 2012 Candidates for their attendance, Mr Peter Gerber for his valuable assistance and all local attendees for their support.

Dear Residents of Mount Morgan & surrounds,

On Saturday, April 28 you will be going to the polls to elect a Mayor and Divisional Councillor. As with any election, you have no doubt been bombarded with leaflets and information and heard all sorts of promises.

The message I’ve received from the community is that they are sick of election promises which can not be delivered. Please consider carefully the validity and affordability of promises being made by both Mayoral and Divisional candidates.

If something sounds too good to be true then usually it is. The reality is, decisions are made by 11 people at the Council table and one person, even the Mayor, can not deliver a promise without the support of a majority of Councillors.

You deserve honesty - not false promises.

Sincerely,

Projects I have underway

The Dam – Demolition of the old greenhouse is due to start soon as part of The Dam beautification project. This project will include extra car parking, barbeques, landscaping and pathways.

A district playground has been included in the plan for The Dam redevelopment. Community consultation will commence shortly with the project to be completed by December.

Youth Programs – I have had very positive discussions with the PCYC, Council and funding bodies to re-establish the youth programs which used to operate from the ‘Green Shed’.

Jim Pearce: “…(Cherie) speaks with respect about Mount Morgan town and its residents. I know that she will be an effective representative for your community.”

Mount Morgan has a vast array of businesses that cater for just about everything anyone would ever need. The hotel industry is no exception. Spending an afternoon with Ty and Esther Bates at the Grand Hotel was a refreshing and insightful experience.

Esther was born in Albury, New South Wales, on the 11th of September 1972. She lived at Bright and came from a family of ten. “My twin was the last of the first five and I was the first of the last five” she laughs when asked where in the line-up of ten did she fit in.

Horse riding was a passion for Esther in her growing years and she loved hanging around her country town enjoying the simplicity of her surroundings. She also enjoyed netball. Esther attended Mount Carmel Christian College through to year twelve.

“I didn’t have any favourite subjects” she chuckles. “I was good at sport and enjoyed school but could have done a lot better if I’d applied myself.”

After completing her education Esther worked for Telstra over a five year period before changing her career path to nursing. She is a division two enrolled nurse and did her training in Victoria.

Ty was born in Colac, Victoria, on the 9th of October 1975 and likes the fact his birth date is the same as John Lennon. “I am a country boy through and through” he states proudly. His father worked for the Forestry Commission which caused regular moves, so Ty had attended various schools over the years. The longest time spent in one place was at Mount Beauty in Victoria where he travelled an hour and a half to a catholic college until he completed year twelve. He then went to TAFE. “I learned how to swear in Croatian” he grins as he reflects back on those years.

At the age of seventeen Ty started working at the Oxford Scholar Hotel. “It was a time when you could have fun on both sides of the bar in a relaxed atmosphere.” He often did a variety of casual work of a day and worked in the hotel of a night. After ten years working in the hotel industry Ty found it to be a lifestyle he enjoyed.

Ty and Esther met in 1996 and were married on the 12th of March 2000. Esther went straight from nursing into hotel work. After Ty experienced a long bout of ill health, he and Esther travelled around Australia and say the Kimberly region was one of their favourite areas.

They spent a lot of time together exploring the bush. They have met some amazing people that have become lifetime friends through their travels. The moved to Mount Morgan was a positive step for them both.

They love the Grand Hotel and Esther finds many similarities to where she came from in Beechworth.

“The weather is better here and the people are great. I also love the history of the town and the fact my husband is here with me” she states with a smile.

Ty feels the same way adding “I love the potential of this place and the food and hospitality is great at the Grand Hotel, as is the hospitality with many of the businesses in town. We love the growth in the town and I’m happy to be sharing it with Esther. It is all quite exciting really.”

Ty and Esther are excited about the improvements they have made already and the new improvements that will be taking place in the near future at the Grand Hotel.

They believe the town will grow and agree that it could be made one of Australia’s top hotspots for tourism if it is advertised correctly. They thank the people of Mount Morgan for being supportive of their efforts in giving the town another place to enjoy.

In future issues it is hoped Ty and Esther’s hotel journey can be updated as they bring new ideas to the already popular Grand Hotel.

WILDLIFE MATTERSby Trish Mathers (Wildlife Carer)

Ph. 0400 591 504

Koalas are fast facing extinction. From reports in the Courier Mail last weekend Koala populations have declined in S.E. Qld by 64% in the last 10 years, and could be extinct within 50 years or sooner. This is due mainly to habitat destruction, dogs and cars, and also disease which is triggered by stress. Unfortunately many of our native species are going down the same track at an alarming rate. Australia has the worst extinction rate in the world, and this is only after 200 years. It is not something to be proud of, and ultimately the responsibility lies with each and every one of us.

Roaming dogs are a massive killer of wildlife, as are cats. If we all play our part and be responsible pet owners, responsible drivers and complain loudly to councils, politicians etc. when development and industry are encroaching on areas that should be protected, we might be able to turn this around before it is too late. It will be awful to have to tell the grandchildren that those beautiful animals we only now see in a zoo were once wild and abundant. A company that makes copy paper applied for and has been given permission to clear the last remaining habitat of the Leadbeaters Possum in Victoria. These beautiful little possums, very similar to Sugar Gliders, had only numbered 1800 previous to the destructive bushfires. It is believed only a couple of hundred remain at the most, all in this one pocket of unburnt bushland, and they now face extinction.

Thank-you so much to the wonderful ladies from Care and Share who have spent many hours sewing beautiful pouches for our sick, injured and orphaned native animals. They are very much appreciated, as are the donations of towels, pillow-cases and other donations we have received from other wonderful locals.

I love my new pouch!

It was the 1960s: the Mount Morgan Mine was in full operation, with no near end in sight. The township was a constant buzz of activity with an array of businesses, clubs and committees operating throughout the local area.

Among the long list of clubs available to be occupied with at the time, there is one in particular which today brings back many a fond memory for local resident, Ellen Rietveld.

“They were known as the Walter Hall Marching Girls.” Ellen says, holding up a photo of the group’s former members (pictured right).

“They were one of the early marching teams in the area, started up about 50 years ago.”

“I wasn’t a marching girl myself, but pictured are my two daughters.

“My eldest daughter was a member. My youngest was too young to join, though since her big sister had a uniform she had to have one too.”

Established by the girls’ late coach, May Cook, the Walter Hall Marching Girls would meet weekly for practice, building their skills in baton twirling and precision formation.

The group would compete against various teams in the region throughout the year, each team contending for the “blue ribbon”.

Although Ellen wasn’t a marching girl herself, she says it didn’t stop her, along with the majority of other mothers, learning a routine or two as well.

“You would often learn to do the steps of the routines yourself,” Ellen laughs.

“Helping the girls with steps and showing them what to do, you would end up knowing the whole routine by the end of it.”

“Along with that, the majority of the mothers would assist with uniforms and fundraising. We would hold working bees designing and sewing the uniforms, and for trips away, we would go up the street with our homemade cakes, tarts and pies, fundraising for the girls’ trips.”

The Mount Morgan Golf Club was proud to host the 2012 Mount Morgan Golf Club 2012 Men’s Open Tournament, held on Sunday 15th April.

61 players, a record attendance for many years, enjoyed the near perfect conditions, thanks to prior rain at the right time, coupled with Dennis Schulze and his eager team of volunteers, who had the course looking a treat.

Our local doctor, and club president, Trevor Palairet won the C Grade Title, with local resident, Steve Garrett winning the Longest Drive prize.

After 27 holes, the A Grade top 2 could not be split, even after a play off hole, by which time darkness was upon us. Both were happy to accept a tie for first place. Pictured below are the happy winners, G. Watt and D. Hunt.

Thanks to all of our local sponsors, and Judy and her kitchen helpers who kept the food rolling out against all odds, and to Lyn Fall who ran the bar smoothly.

Bravery awards go to Barry and Frank, who supplied refreshments on course, and survived to tell the tale.

Thanks to all, see you at the Sandgreens Championships later this year in August.

The 14th of April 2012 saw the start of the season for rugby union. The Mount Morgan Rugby Club kicked off their first game on home grounds, against Bilo.

Both teams played a great game. The score was close throughout the 80 minutes of play, ending in a score of 19-18 in favour of Bilo. Tries were scored by Willy Hayden and Sam Toby. Penalty tries by Scott Toby.

There was a good crowd of local support for the club. We would like to thank all who came and cheered on the boys.

The second game of the season saw the Mount Morgan Rugby Club travel to Emu Park last Saturday, to play against Cap Coast for the second round in this year’s season. Both teams play great and the final score was 22-13 to Cap Coast. Tries were scored by Jerry Barney and Nathan O’Brien, with one each. Scott Toby kicked penalty goals. We would like to thank everyone who travelled to support and cheer on the boys.

The next game will be held on the 28th April, at Rugby Park against Colts with a kick off at 6pm. Hope to see local support for our boys when playing away games. There will be updates of games - to see these updates please like our Facebook page and keep reading the Argus for further rugby game reports.

Ingredients1½kg Chinese pork spare ribs 1 large Onion choppedA little Olive or peanut oil for frying ¼ cup tomato sauce2 tablespoons soy sauce3 tsp hot chilli sauce3 garlic cloves½ tsp black pepper½ tsp cumin powder1 tsp coriander powder2tblsp of sweet paprika1½tablespoon grated green ginger1½ tsp Chinese five spice powder1lt chicken stockA bottle of sweet plum marinate (Masterfoods ™ )440g tin of pieced pineapple and its juice700g pack of frozen Asian style veggies - whichever ones you like

MethodCut the Chinese pork spare ribs into 4cm pieces; fry these until brown. Add onions, fry until onions become clear. Now add all dry spices and tomato sauce, stir for 5 minutes.

Add canned pineapple and its juice, cook for 10 minutes. Next, add sweet plum marinate and cook for 5 minutes. Now just cover with chicken stock and bring to boil and then turn down to simmer (lid off) and simmer; stir now and again to stop sticking for 45 minutes. If needed, thicken with a little corn flour /water paste, cook flour taste out.

Have your Asian veggies heated in micro-wave, now add this to the mix and serve on a bed of fully steamed rice or with your favorite noodles or even mashed spuds. Enjoy with a nice crispy apple cider, or a lemon infused ice cold beer would be nice.
