Excelling in Life, Led by Faith.
Dear Parents,
Holy Week can be confusing for Christians with the death of Jesus Christ. The passion story in the Gospels reflects a time of great turbulence. However, Jesus seems to anticipate the moment of his arrest, keeps his dignity before the Jewish Sanhedrin and the Roman tribunal and meets death with great dignity.
This Easter we worship and give thanks to Jesus Christ for having died on the cross to save us from our sins and suffering. Jesus chose to be nailed to a cross in an agonising death to enable the whole human race to enter eternal life.
In all the ups and downs of our lives, we are able to likewise look at the events of Holy Week with renewed appreciation. We know that if our faith and trust hold true, death is not the end but the beginning of a new life.
FAREWELL
Today we farewelled staff member, Fran Macdonald. Fran has been an integral part of our St Brigid’s College community for nearly ten years. Tomorrow she enters into a well-deserved and well-earned retirement. We thank Fran for her professional and caring work with those of our students who have experienced difficulty within the literacy area. It is now time to relax, spend time in the garden or catch up on the plethora of books that need to be read.
LUKE LESSON
Earlier this week we were fortunate enough to have award winning Slam Poet, Luka Lesson visit our school. He facilitated a workshop with our Year 7 students where they had the opportunity to develop, write, edit and perform their own poems to their fellow classmates. A challenging, but very rewarding process that the students thoroughly enjoyed.
After that session, Years 7, 8, 9, and 10 students viewed a performance from Luka where he showcased his ability and also had the opportunity to ask questions. A most rewarding experience that we hope encourages students to 'find their voice' and use it for good.
CLASS REUNION OF 1997
Recently the Year 12 class of 1997 celebrated their 20 Year Reunion. While the hairlines may have receded and the waistlines may have expanded, there was no doubting the unchanged, fond memories of this group.
Students reminisced about their former classmates, teachers, and school days. It was clearly evident the sense of gratification and respect that these people possess for the Brigidine Sisters and St Brigid’s College. They loved the fact that the timber panelling is still in each of the corridors despite a number of refurbishments around the school.
CARITAS WALKATHON
Project Compassion is the appeal of Caritas which is the Catholic Church's International Aide agency which supports international disasters and global poverty. The appeal is conducted each Lenten season and St Brigid’s has traditionally been a significant supporter of this project.
As part of our last day of the term organisation, all staff and students will participate in our Holy Week liturgy, celebrated by Fr. Peter Hudson, in the stadium during Period 4. (Normal timetabled classes will run in Periods 1-3)
After our liturgy, we will participate in the “K’s for Caritas” walkathon organised by Mr Harslett and his Unit 3/4 RE class to Weir Park and return in time for homeroom and dismissal at 2.30pm. The day will be a coloured clothes day with a gold coin donation to Caritas. This is a whole school event and as such, imperative that all students participate. We hope that tomorrow we will raise significant money for Caritas.
Students will return for Term 2 on Tuesday, 18th April.
Parent/Teacher meetings to discuss student’s progress will be held on Monday, 24th April from 2.00pm - 7.00pm. Interview times can now be booked through the Parent Access Module (PAM). Should families not have access to the internet, a parent is welcome to contact the school (telephone: 53823545) so that a booking can be made through the Front Office.
AND FINALLY………. I wish to thank all of our students for their conduct and attitude towards their studies over the course of the term. In particular, I thank and congratulate two groups of students: our Year 7s on the way in which they have transitioned into our College and our Year 12s on the way in which they have settled into their studies this year and demonstrated a high level of leadership in our school community. I also thank the hard working and dedicated staff of St Brigid’s. You will have noted the many extra opportunities that are provided to our students by our staff who, time and time again, keep giving of themselves to support the students of our College. To all of our staff and students, you deserve a well-earned holiday. I know that our senior students will continue to focus on their studies over the holidays and I certainly encourage them to find up to a week of time to dedicate to homework, study and revision of work that has been completed over the course of first term.
At St Brigid’s, we are very blessed to have students who value their education, teachers and staff who care for and support their students and their families, parents and friends who are actively interested in our school.
Finally, I wish all within our community a restful and safe holiday and hope that, upon our return, we are refreshed and invigorated and ready to do our best for St Brigid’s.
Yours in the community of St Brigid’s College

Matthew Ough
16 Intrepid Swimmers travelled down the Western Highway to Ballarat to compete at GWR Swimming. Individual Swimmers were: Ethan Jolley, Tayla Nagorcka, Jaclyn Clode, Erin Kearns, Matthew Ough, Montanna Connelly, Deacon Briggs, Claudia Lanyon and Eloise Wills. Relay Teams were: Boys 17-20 Medley Ethan Jolley, Matthew Ough, Cameron Sykes, Alex Goldsmith, Boys 17 Freestyle Relay Tom Heard, Jonah Connelly, Matthew Ough and Alex Goldsmith Boys 12-14 Medley Relay Jack Lord, Joshua Dunn, Archie Bond and Deacon Briggs. To attend GWR Swimming students had to win at Black Ranges Swimming in 50 metre events or have a suitable time to enter longer distance events at GWR level. 50m events were in individual age groups - 12-13 years, 14 years, 15 years, 16 years, 17 years and 18-20 years. Longer events were across a broader range group. Some were 12-15 years and 16-20 years and others were 12-20 years. This meant in a 12-20 years event you could have a swimmer turning 12 this year competing against a swimmer turning 20 this year. Our Swimmers were sensational in their events. St Brigid’s College ended up 6th overall; three places clear of Horsham College (9th) but behind Marian College, Ararat (4th). We had two students set new records: Erin Kearns in the Girls 16-20 50 Breaststroke (SWD) set a new record of 1:04.14min and Eloise Wills in the Girls 12-13 50 Backstroke set a new record of 36.81s.
Congratulations to all students who competed in Grand Finals in their chosen sport over the last couple of
weekends.
Special mention to Harrison Combe who has won back to back Grand Finals in Tennis for the Haven Black/Laharum Tennis team.
