BAD ASSESSMENT

Here is an example of a poor item, given on a test after a unit on the planet Neptune:

1. Some scientists believe that Pluto is...

a. an escaped moon of Neptune

 b. usually the most distant planet in the solar systemc. the name of Mickey Mouse¶s dog

d. all of the above

This item is poor because a typical student will know that either a or b is true; and c is

certainly true but unrelated to the lesson. Given two right answers, d is correct and only a

minimal knowledge of the content was needed to make this distinction. In a test setting ³all of 

the above´ usually is a flag that something is unusual.
