    Exam 1 Study check

    PLEASE NOTE:

I am distributing this Study Check as a way for you to check the effectiveness of your studying and to insure that youaren't missing any main points. This is not the subset of information that will be covered on the exam. I consider all of thematerial that I presented in the online lectures as fair game for creating questions for the exam. I recommend that youconsult this Study Check AFTER you review your complete set of notes at least once.

I will not intentionally withhold material from this Study Check and then include it on the exam. However, if you study solely from this paper, you run the real risk of not being totally prepared for the exam. You may not know the full answer to questions on the test or be able toclearly demonstrate your full understanding of the concepts. Bottom line: study your notes, don't just study this Study Check.

Lecture 1 - What is hortitulture?

Compare the etymology of the words "horticulture" and "agriculture". How do they differ, how are they the same, how does this compareto the contemporary understanding of the words? Can you describe the six categories of horticulture that I presented in lecture 1?What are the two general categories of plant multiplication that we will consider in this course?

    Lecture 2 - Shoots

What is the difference between a shoot and a stem according to my definitions anyway? What is the characteristic construction of a plant stem?

What structures can emerge from a node? What is the difference between the location and function of the apical and axillary nodes or meristems?Where do you find stolons and rhizomes? Are they shoot or root tissue? How can you tell?

Lecture 3 - General structure of roots and leaves

How can you distinguish root from shoot tissue?Describe several of the major functions of rootsCompare the origin of the tap root to the origin of fibrous rootsCould you draw a leaf made up of blade and petiole and contrast that to a leaf with blade, collar and sheath? What is meant by leaf veination? What are typical veination patterns that we looked at in class? What is the difference between a simple and a compound leaf?

    Lecture 4 - Inflorescences

What is the differences in the duration of vegetative growth through the growing season between determinate and indeterminate annualherbaceous plants?Do the fruits of an indeterminate annual herbacerous plant tend to mature synchronously or asynchronously? Why?If I gave you a picture of an inflorescence could you identify the pedicel, rachis, peduncle and the node from which the inflorescenceemerges?

Lecture 5 - Plant parts we eat

If you were handed an edible plant part, how would you determine whether it isroot or shootif shoot, whether it is inflorescence, stem or leaf or a combination of thoseif root whether it is is tuberous or tap

What modifications prepare a geophyte for harsh environmental conditions? What is the difference between a bulb, a corm and a tap root? What is similar about them (has to do with their position on the plant)?

Lecture 6 - Science and experimentation

What justification is there for asserting that science is a philosophy?Identify the three types of experimentation that I present in lecture and distinguish among them according to their objectiveCan you draw Kolb's exeriential learning cycle, and more importantly, can you describe how you can utilize this cycle when addressinga problem? What are the three key features of good experimental design? What is a control treatment? What do you randomize when you design an experiment? And why do you do this?

Lecture 7 - Plant cell types

Could you label the cartoon on the left?Could you match he parts to descriptions or attributes like: cellulose, innertube, powerhouse, photosynthesis, garbagedump, matrix, cement, genetic code? What is a tissue?Name two types of dermal tissue cell and distinguish their functions. Where would you find cutin?Compare the three types of cortex cells on the basis of their function and wall thicknessDo all xylem cells carry water? What are the differences in structure and function of xylem cells?Do all phloem cells carry sugars? What are the differences in structure and function of phloem cells?

Lecture 8 - Inside roots and shoot

Differentiate among the Zones of initiation (cell division), elongation and differentiation on the basis of the tissue types you will find in

those zones. What are the two processes that result in plant growth and where do they occur in the shoot and root?Roots have a layer of cells called endodermis. What is the significance of that cell layer? Will you find vascular tissue or pith in the center of an herbaceous dicot root? Will you find vascular tissue or pith in the center of an herbaceous dicot stem? When an herbaceous perennial plant begins to grow in the spring, from what tissue do new shoots emerge? In the dicot vascular system, will you find the xylem toward the center of the stem and phloem to the outside, or the other way around?

Good luck on the first Exam!
