THE PARISH OFFICEAdministrator:Mrs Lynne Yuille 020 8393 2643 (Office)Office email: [email protected]

The postal address is:St Mary’s Ewell Parish Church, London Rd, Ewell, Surrey, KT17 2AY.The Parish Office is on the south side of the church.

The Office hours are normally 9.30-12.00 Mon, Tues, Wed and Fri, butplease check before visiting as appointments are usually needed.

What was the first thing Jesus did when he beganhis three year ministry? He called his disciples. Or, aswe might put it in today's lingo, he gathered his teamaround him. Even Jesus, even the Son of God, workedin a team, rather than alone.

For those of us who try to continue Jesus's work, inthe ways we can in our own communities, we tooneed to be part of a team. Jesus's work is continuedtoday by the church. The word church means 'gather-ing'. In other words, we cannot do what God calls usto do alone. We have to gather. We have to be a team. This is true when we pray and worship:- some sing, some read, some look after the House of God, somekeep the prayers rising when other are distracted. To-gether we are a team offering the work of prayer. Andit's true for everything else we do as well.

At St Mary's, our estates committee which keepsour church and churchyard so well maintained, is ateam. The social committee, the Fair committee, thegroups who run our children's activities, those whosteward our finances, ring bells, arrange flowers, puttogether our publicity and EPN, we work as teams. We can only put on our bereavement café or hold ourevents and charitable activities, because people workas a team. I could go on and fill a page with exam-ples.

On the board outside the front of our church, nextto Vicar it says my name. But if this gives anyone theidea that I do everything, they are very much mistak-en. What St Mary's does and is relies on literallyscores of people, perhaps hundreds. Thanks be to Godfor all those who are involved.

Our teams grow all the time as people get involvedin different ways. But we mark this month a signifi-cant addition as a new priest joins our ministry team.Canon Margaret Marsh introduces herself in thesepages. We look forward to her ministry among us.Then in September, our new children's and familiesworker, Leanne Newman, will be joining the team. She will be supporting and leading all the teams whoput together our wonderful provision of children'sgroups and services.

I am reflecting at the moment how the growth ofour team impacts on the shape of my own ministry.Just as Jesus spent a lot of his time with his disciples, wise leaders will give the key members of their teamthe time and support they need. To help our teams bethe best they can, that may mean I step back from do-ing some things myself, and invest a little bit more

time in supporting the key people who lead our teams. These are exciting times for our church. If you have some time, and a desire to

be a part of something bigger, why not join the wonderful team that is St Mary'schurch? Whatever your skills, background, age, or interests, we would like towelcome you to get involved.

IN CHURCH IN JULYEvery Sunday there is a simple, said service of Holy Communion at 8am, and a

Sung Eucharist at 9:30am. On Sunday 7 July, at 9:30am there is the last children'shour of the term before the summer break, and the parish choir's last Sunday is 14July. The last Fun Day Wednesday of the term is 3 July, while the toddler groupsgo on till Monday 8 and Thursday 11 July.

Praise@11 is our monthly all-age service, and on Sunday 7 July this will be anall-age Holy Communion service at 11am. This is particularly appropriate forfamilies where children have taken first Holy Communion or been confirmed, orif it's something children might be interested in doing in the future and want tofind out more about what Holy Communion is.

Saturday 13 July is, of course Ewell Village Fair! There is plenty more aboutthe fair in these pages of EPN, please do spread the word, and if you or anyoneyou know can help, even just an hour on the day, please, please do be in touch- itreally makes a difference to what we can put on, and being part of the Fair teamon the day is great fun. The following day, Sunday 14 July, there are the two reg-ular services at 8 and 9:30am.

There will be a very special recital on Saturday 20 July. Guitarist and lutenistJamie Akers and singer Susana D'Oliviera Tuxera will be performing music bywomen composers through the ages, starting at 7:30pm.

It's the last Toddle Up of the term on Sunday 21 July at 11am- our short, veryinformal toddlers' service.

Then on 28 July, St Mary's Singers will be leading the music at the 9:30amSung Eucharist. They will stay on to sing at the 11:15am service of MorningPrayer with Holy Baptism- at the time of writing, there are no baptisms booked infor this service, so it may be cancelled, so do double-check if you are planning oncoming along.

IN AND AROUND OUR PARISH BOLIVIA UPDATERichard White gave an update on his work in Bolivia at

the Coffee Morning on Wednesday, 5 June. He volunteersat the young offenders' institute in Cochabamba, whichhouses both boys and girls. They enter up until the age of 17and stay longer if necessary to complete their sentence. Of-fences can be serious including robbery, sexual violence,solvent/alcohol abuse and even murder. Day release is pos-sible as they approach the end of their sentences.

Richard told us that most of them declare they have afaith, predominantly Christian, and they want to have agood relationship with God. They regret what they havedone and are respectful. There is a lack of anger and vio-lence within the institute, quite different to what we encoun-ter in this country at places like Feltham. This wasillustrated in photos of boys using knives in the kitchen andin other areas such as woodworking. The institute is run bythe Social Services. Could this be what makes the differ-ence?

An update was given on some of the young people fea-tured in a previous presentation. Some were doing finewhereas others were struggling.

Richard thanked St. Mary's for the money that has beensent to help them. The first month after release is particular-ly important, especially if they have no family. Essentialssuch as a cooker, saucepans and a mattress need to be pro-vided to get them started.

The talk was inspirational and uplifting. Richard's work ishelping to change so many young lives and assisting themto lead a life away from crime. And it all started fromwatching "The Mission" (the 1986 Academy Award win-ning film about a Jesuit missionary's efforts to convert a re-mote native community to Christianity), which sparked aninterest in South America. This led Richard to Latin Linkand the rest, as they say, is history.

It's very easy to feel guilty or helpless when we so oftenhear on the news about more drought leading to lost crops forpeople who already have so little; about floods where theyhave never been before as close as Staines; about the biggestever cyclone in Mozambique leaving millions homeless andwhen we see on our TV screens the pollution of the sea andsea life caused by plastic.

At the end of our Lent course this year Ben Niblett fromTearfund came to share some ideas about how we might makea difference for the better as individuals and as a church. Benis a senior member of Tearfund's advocacy team and has woncampaigns on climate change, water and sanitation and cor-ruption. He encouraged us not to feel guilty about what wecan't do but to focus on what we can do - out of love for Godand for our neighbour and for the earth. He shared with us histop four tips which would be steps in the right direction -

Switch electricity to renewable sources in ourhomes and churches. Ben gave us a websitewww.tearfund.org/switch

Drive less. If you are able to use public transport, walk, cycle or share a car. Some people are switchingto an electric car but this isn't for everyone.

Fly less. Not taking one flight makes a difference. Can you take a train or Skype/Facetime?

Eat less meat. (Cows and sheep breathe out meth-ane, a powerful greenhouse gas.)

There is a booklet 'Tenants for the King' which includesideas about how individuals can put into practice the impera-tive that we can and should each one of us make a differencein caring for creation through the choices we make in ourevery day lives. If you would like a copy of the booklet (priceis £2.99) or are interested in joining St Mary's new churchEco-group, please get in touch with the Reverend Sue Ayling(on 020 8337 6347 or [email protected]).

CLIMATE CHANGE - MANY STEPS IN THE RIGHT

DIRECTION

SPRING MARKET

Our Spring Market got off to a flying start thanks to anabundance of home grown plants, the vast majority of thembeing donated by green fingered members of ourcongregation. Business was brisk on the well-stocked bric-a-brac stall and bargain hunters were in their element as theysearched for that elusive 'special something'. The book stallhad an astonishing amount of literature for all avid readerswho enjoyed looking for a good weekend read. Thehomemade cakes - always popular - looked delicious andsold out very quickly. After all that, it was time for awell-earned rest and a coffee while browsing the numerousraffle prizes before purchasing – hopefully – a winning ticket.

The happy bustling atmosphere made for an enjoyable andsuccessful event. None of this could be achieved without theusual team of stalwart helpers – thank you all for your hardwork and enthusiasm.

How many Scandinavian composers can you think of?Most people, when asked this question, will probably an-

swer ‘Sibelius’ (Finnish) and ‘Grieg’ (Norwegian). Theknowledgeable few might even add ‘Nielsen’ (Danish) as well. There are, of course, many more than just these three: tonight’srecital acted as an introduction to their music, either written fororgan or arranged for the instrument.

At first glance Dietrich Buxtehude counts as a Germancomposer and not a Nordic one. He did, however, spend hisworking life as organist in the prosperous city of Lübeck on theBaltic Sea coast. Alone among German cities at the time, early18th century, Lübeck did not become embroiled in constantwarfare. The city tended to look north and trade with otherBaltic states. Anyway, Buxtehude wrote a good deal of veryfine music for organ including the Prelude in F sharp minorthat opened tonight’s concert.

Though principally an orchestral composer, and a man whonever held any organist’s position, the music of Jean Sibeliusnevertheless sounds wonderful on the Willis organ. ValseTriste (sad waltz) was written as incidental music for a now-forgotten play but remains popular as a concert piece. Equallypopular is the Karelia Suite. At the time of its composition, theprovince of Karelia was not in Finland at all, but part ofRussia. A great patriot, Sibelius wrote a stirring piece - weheard two movements from the Suite, the Intermezzo and AllaMarcia – the first performance of which in 1893 put Finlandon the map. It also did no harm whatsoever to Sibelius’reputation

The ever-popular Piano Concerto belies Edvard Grieg’stalent which lay in the field of miniatures for piano, rather thanin large-scale works. We heard Wedding day at Troldhaugen, one of the Lyric Pieces which Grieg wrote for his wife incelebration of their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary that tookplace in the village church at Troldhaugen.

Oskar Lindberg is one of Sweden’s leading composers andit was a privilege to hear some of his music performed tonight. He wrote fine music for the organ – he was organist at Engels-brekt church in Stockholm – as well as for orchestra and smallchamber ensembles. On the basis of what we heard tonight, hedeserves to be better known in this country. Among his com-positions, the Organ Sonata in G minor, opus 23 stands out.Composed in 1924, this magnificent work is in four move-ments: opening with a lugubrious Funeral March, there fol-lows an Adagio (slow) then a movement headed ‘AllaSarabande’. A Sarabande is a kind of stately dance. The Finaleof the sonata is an exhilarating allegro con brio – quick andwith vigour. A short, cheerful Wedding piece by Lindbergcame earlier in the programme. Lindberg came from the Dalar-na area of Sweden, a rural area rich in folk tradition.

One of Europe’s leading organists of the first half of thetwentieth century is Gerard Bunk. For most of his life, Bunkworked at the cathedral at Dortmund, Germany. Jonathanplayed his Passacaglia in A minor, opus 40 comprising varia-tions, double fugue and final quotation on the name BACH,which dates from 1911. I should point out that the name ofBach translates well into musical notation (German, that is)

and has for long been a popular theme for composers.Though not himself an organist, Carl Nielsen loved the

organ and composed a major piece for it, the Commotio opus58 dating from 1931. A one-movement piece it comprisesmany contrasting sections.

The Lindberg Sonata ended tonight’s concert. As an encore,Jonathan chose another piece by Lindberg, an arrangement ofan old folk song from the Dalarna region. This delightful, rather moving piece brought the evening to a suitable conclu-sion.

ORGAN RECITAL Saturday 4 May 2019“NORTHERN LIGHTS”: an exploration of the organ music of

Scandinavia byJonathan Holmes

‘BEATING THE BOUNDS’SUNDAY, JUNE 2

In recent years St. Mary's has revived the ancient custom of'Beating the Bounds', walking the parish boundaries to ensurethat they are well known amongst church officials andparishioners. The walk was preceded by a short Praise @ 11,aptly including the hymn 'One more step along the way I go'.The 16 walkers and two dogs were blessed with fine weatherand set off at a pace, with two of the younger participants intheir electric John Deere! It was lovely along the footpathbeside the Hogsmill and we soon found ourselves in GibraltarRec, and ready for lunch. After we had finished our picnics anda few had had a game of frisbee we said goodbye to ouryoungest walkers (riders!) and set off towards Epsom, thenacross to NESCOT before heading up to Warren Farm andNonsuch Park. Some of the group were surprised by thesehidden pockets of vast green spaces so close to home, vowingto visit them more often. Our route took us along the Ewell andStoneleigh borders and along the busy Kingston Road beforediving down a footpath towards Ewell Court. A welcome breakwas called for and treats including cake and milk shakes wentdown well. During the day some of our younger walkers hadbeen tackling an observation quiz, and we all joined in spottingand identifying a number of bird species around the EwellCourt lake before heading back along the Hogsmill, eventuallyretracing our footsteps in to the village and to the church.

The service ended with the presentation of asmall gift to Patrick and the Toccata from Widor’s 5thSymphony.

I am absolutely delighted to be joining you at St Mary’son 7 July.  I have known Russell as a Deanery colleaguefrom my time at Walton-on-the-Hill; John Baxter and Itrained together, and Sue and I were both ordained from StMary’s Cuddington.  I hope it won’t be too long before Iget to know everyone associated with the parish.

Apart from feeling very much at home with yourchurch tradition, I have been inspired by the wonderfulvariety of services and church activities which you offer toall age groups and I am looking forward immensely tobeing able to contribute to the vibrant life at St Mary’s andto learning and growing myself as we share the journey offaith together.

My husband Charlie will of course be joining me.  Wehave lived in Stoneleigh for many years, apart from the tenyears at Walton, and our son and daughter-in-law and twoyoung grandsons also live close by so we are able to enjoyall the delights of grandparenting!  We hope to becomefully involved in the life of both the church and EwellVillage and making new friends.

LAST CALL FOR THEGRAND DRAW

You may remember that enclosed withthe May edition of Ewell Parish News weretwo books of Grand Draw tickets. Onceagain you have been very generous and wehave had many counterfoils with the appro-priate cash returned. However, if you havenot yet returned yours, it is not too late! You may either send them to the promoter -as detailed on the tickets - or put them inthe 'blue box' at the back of the church. Weare, of course, immensely grateful to allwho give support to the Grand Draw eitherby donating prizes or selling tickets.
