Hello Everyone

There’s such a lot going on in the village this month, so

everyone should find something that interests them or

a cause that they wish to support.

It’s great to see the Youth Club raising funds for

MacMillan cancer charity again - well done all of you.

And the Parish Council have organised a footpath

ramble to help with Children in Need, the Church has a

couple of fundraisers in the diary and of course the

Newsletter’s Murder Mystery is this month - so make sure you get your tickets soon

for all of these events.

I’d like to say a big thank you to all our advertisers - both those who have renewed

and all the new ones - without the revenue from advertising we would not exist, so

we really appreciate your support and hope that you get lots of business from your

adverts. Readers, please use our advertisers whenever you can, they are all local

Thea Jones

Thea came to Temple Ewell in 1961 and

taught the Reception Class at our

primary school. She loved nature and

took the children on walks and introduced

them to hamsters and stick insects,

which she brought to school from her

menagerie at home.

Thea became a Lay Reader at our

church and sang in the choir with her

husband Glynn until her retirement from

school. They then settled in Scotland in

a cottage near Kinlock Rannoch,

Perthshire, in the shelter of ‘her mountain’,

as she called Mount Schiehallion.

Thea never lost interest in Temple Ewell

and welcomed visits from old friends and

received our Temple Ewell Newsletter

regularly.

Thea passed away peacefully in her

93rd year at home with her son Grant

caring for her.

Friday Club Friday Club

We have returned from our shut down, which was for the

whole of August and are now back in the swing of things.

We kicked off with a Fish and Chip Lunch which went down

very well. There were twenty-eight of us all munching away and the silence was

deafening. We also had some visitors join us from Outreach TE who played bingo

with us.

As the nights start to draw in please be careful when out at night, carry a torch and

leave a light on in the house if out for any length of time. Remember that the

clocks go back at the end of October so be extra vigilant.

Remember too that, if anyone would like to join us, we are here in the Village Hall

1.30pm - 4.30pm every Friday,. There is no age limit just come along.

That's all for now

Take care,

Regards Yvonne

Samphire Hoe Visit 27th August

On Thursday Erin, Willow and I visited the

new Educational Centre at Samphire

Hoe. We first went with the ‘Bug Man’ and got to hold a

moth, butterfly, cockroach and a millipede which crawled

across our hands.

Then we went

to the beach and collected shells and

walked along the walkway and got

splashed by waves. After that we went

to the lighthouse and had lunch. It rained

hard while we were there but when it finished we went

back to the Centre and had an ice cream.

A hero of the Catholic movement of the Church of England, September 9th was the

day set aside in our liturgical calendar to remember with thanksgiving Fr. Charles

Lowder. In the 1850’s Fr. Lowder dedicated himself to ministering among the

‘poorest of the poor’ who existed in the squalor of London’s East End slums.

Priests like him suffered much persecution from those who objected to their ‘high

church’ ritual practices but they brought a colour to their worship which, together

with devotion to the poor, brought many thousands to the Christian faith. Light

shone in the bleakness of ‘grey lives’.

September 9th was also the day Her Majesty the Queen, having all those 63 years

ago dedicated her life “whether it be long or short” to the service of her people

became the longest serving British monarch. Some from both villages will remember

Marian Middlebrook who, now in her mid 90’s, resides in a nursing home in Dover.

In many ways Marian’s life was a ’dedicated life’ and many experienced her sup-

port and care when they most needed it. Some years ago it was my privilege to

be Marian’s companion when, in recognition of her work for the community, she

15

was among those in Canterbury Cathedral to be presented by the Queen with a

Maundy Purse. As, to a fanfare, the small figure of Her Majesty entered the

Cathedral, it was as if the sun came out. Presenting the many purses she care-

fully ensured she spent a little more time with those confined to wheelchairs, and

it was clear that many of their eyes had ‘filled up!’ I discreetly blessed the Queen

as she left, passing close by.

When this beautiful world so often seems dark and broken, always there are those

who bring a special gift and, yes, even a tragic small Syrian boy we cannot forget

laying in the arms of a Turkish policeman brought the light of a change of heart

among millions. How can we not remember the words of the Son who gave his

dedicated life on the Cross and pray for their fulfilment? ‘.....for the kingdom of

heaven belongs to such as these’ (Matthew 19:14)

PS. As I write, Gift Day donations are still arriving and I do not have a total, but

thank you so much for your generous response and the kind warmth which made

a grey day rather special. Thanks again to the Youth Club for the contents of their

swear box. Down on last year but made up with a kind donation!

Repairs to the Church Building

We have just started a Friends Association and I can report

on how the Friends will assist in funding repair work at the

Church in a small way.

Inside the Church, at the moment, there is scaffolding in the Tower enclave. It has

been put there to make a much needed inspection. Next to the Tower there is

more inside scaffolding to enable the nearby walls to be treated and re-painted.

We welcome new Friends to join us. Funds and help raised by us are used solely to

preserve our beautiful village Church. They are not used for religious purposes.

I sincerely hope that you can be persuaded to join us.

HOW WISE AM I?

Albert Einstein is reputed to have said " The difference between stupidity and

genius is that genius has its limits." I have found myself walking down the street

and saying "what a fool I am!" and "How could I have done such a thing," as some-

thing of my past flashes through my mind.

We are supposed to acquire wisdom with age but I will need to live a lot longer yet

if this is to be achieved. The saying that "There is no fool like an old fool!" also

comes to mind. The picture of an absent minded professor amply illustrates the

difference between knowledge and wisdom. Some very learned men have made

stupid and unwise decisions. The papers are full of examples.

The wisest man is claimed by The Bible to be King Solomon who was given great

wisdom by God. Initially he used it well. Many of you will know the story of his deciding which

woman was the actual mother of the baby which both were claiming. With the

passage of time his wisdom deserted him when his passion for women became his

main concern.

True wisdom always comes from on high and when Jesus Christ came along it was

stated that "one greater than Solomon is here."

The Bible says "The wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure, then

peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and

sincere."

From the Dover Express and East Kent News, Friday 19 September, 1884. Price 1d.

Alfred Hopper, landlord of the “Donkey Inn,” Temple Ewell, applied for a license to sell

spirits. In answer to Mr. Mercer he said he paid £18 a year as rent for house he was

landlord for; it had five rooms on the ground floor, one recently built, and four on the 2nd

floor. His business was increasing and he had lodgers in the summer time who came

down from London; also a great many people came to his place to play bowls of an

evening, and if any of them wanted spirits he had to fetch some at the “George and

Dragon.” He thought there was more demand for them now as the inhabitants had

increased since he last applied for his license, and numbered now 600 inhabitants.

There were houses. He had applications for spirits on an average five or six times daily.

He had a bowling green and parties who came to play, and had to go to the “George

and Dragon” if they wanted.

In reply to Mr. Mowll the applicant said he applied for his license last year and then was

refused; there had been no new houses built nearer his, than the “George and Dragon”

since then. Mr. Martin Mowll who appeared on behalf of the landlady of the “George

and Dragon,” contended that there had been no cause why the Bench should reverse

the decision of the previous years. The Bench refused to grant the application and said

they hoped it would not be brought again.

From the Dover Express and East Kent News, Friday 29 May, 1885. Price 1d.

.................Mr. Martyn Mowll on behalf of the owner of a neighbouring house opposed

the application. The Magistrates decided to refuse the application.

From the Dover Express and East Kent News, Friday 17 September, 1886. 1d.

Mr. Vernon Knocker applied on behalf of Messrs. Beer and Co, of Canterbury, for a spir-

it license for the “Donkey” at Ewell. He stated that Alfred Hopper had been the tenant for

a good many years, and the house had been properly conducted. There were about 600

inhabitants of Ewell, and the landlord of the “Donkey” had several times been asked for

spirits. He had about three-quarters of an acre of ground adjoining the house, which was

used as a bowling green, the only one in the village. He (Mr. Knockler) had a memorial

signed by about twenty five residents in the village or close by, in favour of the license.

For the application he called the following witnesses:- George Andrews proved serving

the copies of the notice of the application on the Superintendent of Police and

Overseers.

Mr. Alfred Hopper said: I posted a copy of the notice produced on the Church doors and

on the house on the three last Sundays in August. I am the tenant of the house and have

been in occupation five years. The house is rented at £16 10s. I produce the memorial,

which is signed by the parties named. The “George and Dragon” is about 200 yards

away. Attached to my home is a bowling green, the only one in the village. During the

summer I have visitors staying at my house. They require something more than beer. I

have had constant applicants for spirits.

By Mr. Mowll: There have been no new houses erected near my house since last year.

Mr. Martyn Mowll appeared to oppose the license and contended that it was not

required, the “George and Dragon,” which was a fully licensed house, being near by.

The Bench declined to grant the application and stated they were of the same opinion

as last year, when the same application was made.

10 is complete, but the bulk of the properties in Lydden served by this Cabinet are

too distant from the Cabinet to be offered a fibre-based service. This includes most

of the properties in the specific roads you mention. They are all in scope for 2Mbps

standard service provided by the KCC/BDUK programme by the end of 2015.

We understand that it is very frustrating for those who are not getting superfast

broadband under the current project. As a result, we have been successful in

seeking and obtaining additional funding to further extend the reach of superfast

services and are working with BDUK on a new UK-wide programme to extend the

coverage of the current contract to bring superfast broadband to 95% of premises

in Kent and Medway. We are currently working through the detailed deployment

of the new contract and once we have determined the optimum coverage for the

County, we will re-publish our mapping and update our website with the

new information. We expect this to be in September 2015 once we have carried

out a thorough audit and can be confident that the extended roll-out is sensible and

brings as much Superfast broadband to the County as possible.

For Lydden, we have asked that the whole of the village currently suffering from

long line lengths is included in our next contract and that a sensible solution

is provided to enable the whole village to benefit. We expect this to be included

in our contract (due to start construction in January next year - and run to the late

summer of 2018) and as soon as we have the detail available to publish we will do so.“

I am particularly encouraged that both Villages will now be receiving special

focus/attention regarding the roll out to alleviate distance issues with extra funding

plans due September etc. I recently submitted an article to the local press which

has helped bring this issue to the fore at KCC. A copy was also tweeted at

@Lydden&TempleE .

We enjoyed a lovely meal at our September meeting when we

celebrated 100years of the WI.

We were very interested to hear from two of our members about their

experiences when they joined the W.I. many years ago. Amongst our guests was

our chairman Marion and our advisor Dorothy. At the end of the meeting each

member was given a present to commemorate this special year.

Dear Readers

I have had an enquiry as to who is

responsible for administering the

Facebook page for the Village

Hall. It seems this was not

instigated by the Committee and

they are concerned as the contact

number on there is not the correct

one.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Dear Readers

I would just like to say how lovely the new

parish council noticeboards look outside

the shop, at the allotments and in particular,

the one at Dragon Wood. It was very

interesting to read about the flora and

fauna in this area and I'm sure villagers

and visitors will benefit from it.

Congratulations also to Mrs Miles, Mr

Newington and Mrs Holness for their

awards for their loyal and committed

service to Temple Ewell, they are very

well deserved.

Best wishes,

Temple Ewell Parish CouncilTemple Ewell Parish Council

A new oak village notice board has been commissioned by the

Parish Council, and recently installed next to the post office. The

right hand section of the notice board will be used by the Parish

Council to display notices of agendas, minutes of meetings and

other council business. The left hand section is for events and

advertisements. Two thirds of the funding has come from grants, the remaining

third from Parish Council reserves.

Additionally an oak interpretation board has

also been installed at the entrance of

Dragon Wood. Until now there has been

nothing to explain the wood’s significance,

both for its history and as a nature reserve. The

installation of our new interpretation board will

enhance the experience of visitors. A lot of

consideration was taken to ensure that the

graphics included not just the wood but also

monumental buildings that sit in the heart of

the village.

The Parish Council decided some time ago

to seek the dedication of the area of land

known as Dragon Wood under the (Queen

Elizabeth II Fields Challenge) to secure it in

public ownership in perpetuity.

The two old notice boards have been recycled and are now situated on the upper

and lower allotments.

The full Parish Council meets on the last Tuesday of the month (excluding August

and December) at 7.15pm at the Temple Ewell Baptist Church Hall on the corner

of the High Street and London Road. Parishioners are encouraged to report any

incidents within the village to PCSO May on 0777 222 6209 or to go to the PCSO’s

monthly surgery. For immediate help contact Dover Police on 01304 240055 or

dial 999. Parishioners are most welcome to attend and contribute to meetings.

The agenda and minutes are displayed on the Parish Council notice board by

Southdown Stores and on the Council website.

sessions on the final restoration and improvements plans, health walk training is

taking place and there is some emergency work happening in the parks.

Public Consultation

Our conservation plan is ready, final designs for the restoration and improvement

works are almost complete and a range of activities have been planned to help

people make the most of the parks. Please come along and let us know what you

think about the plans:

Monday 5 Oct - 5pm to 7pm at St Marys Parish Centre, Dieu Stone Lane, Dover

Tuesday 6 Oct - 9am to 12 noon in Kearsney Abbey

Thursday 8 Oct - 2pm to 5pm in Russell Gardens

Saturday 10 Oct - 10am to 1pm in Kearsney Abbey

All the sessions will have the same information and you can drop in at any time.

We will also put all the plans on our website and will send out a link shortly. This

will be the last chance to comment on the plans before they are submitted to our

funders, so please come along and discuss the plans with the project team.

Health Walk training

Are you interested in leading a health walk in Kearsney Abbey and Russell

Gardens? East Kent Health Walks are holding a walk leader training day on

Wednesday 14 October in Dover. For more information and to sign up please email

their volunteer coordinator, Martyn Jordan, on [email protected]

Emergency works

We have been carrying out some rather noisy emergency works in Kearsney

Abbey recently – we had to deal with a fallen tree near the lake and needed to

replace the café doors. The work should be complete shortly – we’re sorry for any

inconvenience or disruption this causes.

We look forward to seeing you during the month, but if you have any questions in

the meantime please get in touch.

I have no time to stand and stare,as has already been written.

‘Cos I’m on my way to work, you seeto be at my desk an’ sittin’!

But oh, the sights and sounds I witnessedtoday,

The leaves they are a’changing.A British autumn at its very best,a pond here, its occupants there.

Swans, ducks, their feather colours ranging.

From white to black, dark blue and even brown. An artist’s palette, God’s brush has been at work. He’s been a very busy man all through the year.

No time to stand, to stare, to even shirk.

But hey, my eyes should be on the road,my hands steady at the wheel.

I really shouldn’t be looking at the beautiful treesItching to stop to pick up the lovely leaves!

When on a working day, can I find time to stop, to stare? At the end of a working week?

By then, I feel too tired to even stand, all I can do is sit down and glare!!
