Sli.VATOR WATBKltOUStt istypical enthusiast. His convictionsnre deep-roote- enough to satisfythe strongest partisan.
Tnosit who always look forwardwith pleasing anticipations to thesmoking concerts of the HonoluluCricket Club will be glad to knowthat the organization has mademore preparation than ever beforefor the event of next week.
Ii' THKKii is one thing that Hiloreally needs and should have grant-
ed with speed, it is street improve-
ment. Thoroughfares lor a placethat is doubtless to become a con-
siderable city can now be providedmuch more advantageously than inthe years to come.
NiilTiiuu Senator lirown norSenator McCaudless, nor yet thepresiding officer of the upperbranch have up to date felt it necessary to ask for a body guard orproduce recommendations. Thefirst named says he doesn t caremuch even if he is called "OpiumBrown." He remarks that callingnames is not argument.
Tins First Regiment quite covered itself with glory last evening,The uniformed force of the Repub'lie, without its artillery, madereally excellent showing and thevisitors, all experienced men, saidso without reserve. Besides theFirst Regiment, Hawaii has foot
and mounted police, a cavalry com'pany and a large body of volunteersknown as the Citizens' Guards.
BE RATIONAL.
Cecil Brown, a member for thisIsland, gave notice in the NationalSenate yesterday that he proposedUter to introduce an act to providefor and regulate the importationand sale of opium and preparationsthereof. Under the present statutes the drug is a contraband. Butits importation, sale and use arepractically restricted or limited onlyby the demand for it. The trafficis a scandal, a laugh at the law,
Effort to keep out the drug, however earnest, is at best at farce, anexpensive, hopeless, resultlesscombat.n iiuxtv.'c xji ait nciriJurpu3iiigconsideration of plans to end thescandal and farce and to attempt toremedy a great evil draws fire. Theresponses are not germain. Those who have arraigned them-selves; in opposition to apiece of suggested legislation werescarcely expected to argue to thequestion. They sneered whenSenator Brown, in urging the CableSubsidy at the special session saidhe would present an act on opiumto assist in producing the neededadditional revenue. Perhaps itwas thought the gentleman wouldthus be frightened from his intent, but he is apparently not of thatsort of timber. What may alsoastonish some of the howlers is tofetch up with a man who keeps hisword.
At any rate the proposition, which, by the way is by no meansa new one, is squarely placed be-
fore the Legislature. It has beenin sight of the people all the time. The manner in which it is receivedis what is deemed by Tub Star asworthy comment at this time.Broad intimations of the basestcharacter are speared at those whoare suspected of even willingness to"look into" the matter. These aremingled with ludicrous threats andshrieks from the original "BabyAct" They assume, as "they" al-
ways do, that their view of a given. proposition is the only side that
should be given the thought or at-
tention of an instant. This attitudemakes their utterances nonsensical.
There is at hand a situation thatmust be faced, a problem the mustbe solved. We find a condition anda serious one. If opium is to bemade tabu, let every effort of the of-
ficial, the legislator and the citizenbe exerted to that end. Theremust be some strong countenanceto its importation; there must besome sentiment not against it, elseit would not be dealt in or usedfreely.
In refusing absolutely to listenthe reformer but lends aid to thosein the traffic. And some startlinghints as to those in the traffic are attimes heard upon the streets.
Don't wail and wave the wellworn Hawaiian Bloody Shirts.Don't be fanatical. Don't talk oftaking up rifles against SenatorsBrown, McCandless, Hocking andj
"Uheir friends, supporters, admirersand sympathizers, because for onetiling some of these gentlemen are
ri)rettv fair shots themselves tintmuch averse to fighting and notentirely unacquainted with it, andfor another thing because such talkU foolish and silly. Later TimStar will enter into detailed dis-
cussion of this question and nowInvites communications upon thesubject, which the same must beb'rief or they will not be accepted.
In the meantime, let us all berational.

A considerable portion of the ser-

He proceeded to show without a doubtthat the party spirit and zeal fordenominational ascendency amongdifferent sections of the church today was robbing God of souls, nndfrom thisground hedeli vered an ct mest plea for the Union of all Chr st'ians on the Word of God alone.Infidelity and skepticism are notonly encouraged but actually creat-ed by the partisan spirit in professing christians, Many a youngman takes his first step toward adrunkard's grave when from theband of some lady church memberhe takes his first glass of liquor onmaking Her a new year s call, andthat woman robs God of that soul, although she does not do it intentionally". Many ofthe christians present warmly com-mended the evancelist for his denunciation of the popular sins offashionable church members. Success of the l'jthlan Social amiHop.
A. most enjoyable and thoroughsuccess was made of the anniver-
