The past decade has seen an unprece-

dented proliferation of telecommunication

technology. As a matter of course

satellite, fibre optic cables, mobile radio

and computer technology are used to link

into the global telecommunication network

and to reach even the remotest points on

earth. And the telecommunication

technology is still in a stage of accelerated

evolution.

n The information age

The most famous ancient example of

transferring information is probably the

legend of the Greek envoy running thedistance of 42 km between Marathon and

Athens in 490 BC to deliver the message of

victory over an enemy. Modern information

transfer is less exhausting and even less time

consuming.

As a core piece of our information society

telecommunication has touched every facet

of our lives. Reliable telecommunication

networks are of high importance to the

economy of our society.

The choice of telecommunication

technologies seems to be bewildering. The

suitability of a certain telecommunication
