The BulletinFebruary/March 2019 Shevat/Adar I/Adar II 5779 Vol. 90 No. 25The Bulletin is supported by an endowment established by Jane R. Perlman
For many of us, charting the course of our lives can o en feel as if we are climbing a mountain, taking each step higher and higher in the hopes of one day reaching the very top-the proverbial “ nish line” as it were. We tend to assume
that the bene t, or even purpose, of the path to the top is for the sense of accomplishment that we will a ain upon our arrival there. Consider the peaks like this that we set in our lives, telling ourselves “I’ll be satis ed/grateful when....”
Such goal-se ing certainly proves motivating and perhaps even noble, but if our gaze is xed solely on the top, directed exclusively towards our goal, we will likely miss a lot, if not all, of the beauty along the way. So focused on where we are going, we can inadvertently or even willfully delay our experience of gratitude, not only for where we’ve been, but more importantly, for where we nd ourselves in any given moment.
This is not a modern phenomenon. While being pursued by the Egyptians, God parts the Sea of Reeds to let the Israelites cross through. But the Egyptians follow them. Once the Israelites make it safely to other side, God closes the sea upon the Egyptians. At this point, the Israelites are nally free. One rightfully assumes that THIS is the Israelites’ peak moment. As such, the rabbis of the Talmud use this narrative to explore the question of when a person should u er a blessing of gratitude. They teach that the answer is when they see “the abrot/crossings ofthe Sea [of Reeds]”. Although some commentators assert that one can only see the crossings a er successfully navigating them and arriving at the nal destination, others, including Rashi, suggest that one can and should see the crossings at any and all points along the way, even (and perhaps especially) whilst in their midst, before ultimate success has been achieved.1
The truth of life is that we do not have to wait until the heights of achievement or the perfect moments to feel and express gratitude, because holiness abounds not just in the peak moments, but in every moment. Ours is a tradition that invites us to be present, eyes wide, hearts open, not selectively, but for every step along the way.

President’s Letter
Dear Friends,
I’m in the car on a long trip with my girls. Do they ask to turn on the radio? Are they riveted to their phones? No, in fact, they are singing prayers and Hebrew songs they
learned participating in Selah* because they enjoy it. More so, they explain the meaning of what they are singing to me. How wonderful to hear!
I’ve been re ecting on what NSCI has meant for our daughters who are currently in 6th and 8th grade. For us, religious education and B’nei Mitzvah were certainly a great part of the many reasons we became congregants. How would the experience at NSCI infuse my children’s sense of Jewish identity,
valuing synagogue life, worship, or Jewish community? We knew for certain that religious education was an essential commitment we wanted to make for our children. We have a Jewish home and extended family that celebrate Jewish holidays together. At the end of the day, even with our best intentions and e orts, our kids would either connect and embrace Judaism, their Jewish education, and opportunities at NSCI or not. You can lead a horse to water….
Here’s one more experience among many that I’d like to share with you. I’m telling my 8th grader that I am working on guring something out. She shares that when she feels stressed, she says the Shema. Yes, the watchword of our faith. To be honest, I wish I could say that she learned that from us at home. The in uence has come from religious
education and participation in worship.
I feel that we as parents are responsible for cultivating our children’s Jewish identity and connection to our faith, culture, and traditions. I also am so grateful to have the care and wisdom of our clergy and the privilege to participate in a synagogue like NSCI–a community where we and our children can learn and grow Jewishly together–a congregation that gives support and possibilities beyond measure.
Warmly,Marilyn
*Cantor Goldstein and Alan Goodis o er Selah, a religious school option for singers and guitar players in 6th-12th grade and teach them to lead prayer through music on Shabbat and the High Holy Days.
From Our Executive Director

Safety and Security are not new concepts at NSCI. They were a focus long before I arrived as Executive Director last May and continue to be a top priority. Since I arrived, we have had no fewer than four in-depth
sta trainings, several drills with our teachers and students, multiple meetings and assessments with law enforcement experts, and have hosted Glencoe Public Safety’s training exercises. By the end of June, we will have invested over $250,000
in security infrastructure since 2017 with assistance from grants from the Department of Homeland Security and JUF.
While our safety and security protocols are robust, the strongest investment we can make is in our relationships and training–with law enforcement, with sta , and with our congregants. With that in mind, we are hosting two safety training sessions at NSCI for our congregants. This is a chance to learn about many of our safety and security procedures at NSCI including how you can help keep yourself and others safe in the event of an
incident. We will cover everything from severe weather to medical emergencies to intruders. The training will be led by Dean Weinberg, a member of our Board of Directors and head of our Building & Grounds and Security Commi ees, and me on the following dates:
Wednesday, February 20, 6:00 pm-7:00 pmSunday, March 10, 9:15 am-10:15 am
Please RSVP to [email protected] and indicate which date you would like to a end. Again, this training is only open to NSCI congregants.

BimBam are words you might associate with a Shabbat song. Just saying, those words gets me singing.
I get really animated when BimBam refers to BimBam.com–LOL–this is a pun as BimBam are animated videos about Jewish life. Shaboom! Just
the name makes you giggle. You’ll be laughing when you watch these cartoon characters zooming around in the “Passover Special” or “Get Along Gang,” about peace in the home. Perhaps you would be interested in the Passover Lego movie? BimBam has short videos which appeal to the head as well as the heart, and to children and adults. They cover Jewish holidays, life events, values, and the weekly Torah portion.
BimBam.com is to videos what PJ Library is to books. Both use storytelling to capture the imaginations of children, parents, and
grandparents. Both use entertaining, clever ways to share Jewish content. Both are accessible–one is sent to you in the mail; all you do is subscribe, and the other is accessible 24/7 on your electronic devices including the ever-present smartphone. Both are a ordable: they are o ered to individuals at no cost. Both are easy to bring into your home. Both are a great Jewish experience for parents, children, and grandparents to share together.
Spoiler alert: Rabbi Ge en narrated a BimBam video. See if you can nd it on the website!
Have I convinced you to watch one of the videos?
I can’t wait to hear your reviews. Which BimBam video did you watch rst? Did you binge watch? What was one of your favorite lines?
My thumb is up, how about yours?

Our Immigration Stories:
Arvey WolkeBy Ellen (Katz) Block
Arvey Wolke is an esteemed member of our congregation. He is ever-present at Friday night, minyan and holiday services and a consummate volunteer, beloved by the children in our religious school. Arvey was born on October 26, 1926, in a small shtetl in a part of Poland that is now Ukraine. Arvey’s father died when he was only two years old, thus he lived with his mother and older brother, Sanford, in one large multi-purpose room in a building behind his paternal grandfather’s house. His home had no indoor plumbing, no electricity and no gas. A coal burning stove was used for cooking and heat along with a stone oven. Arvey’s mother had a stallin the village marketplace where shesold coal to local farmers to help supportthe family.
The marketplace, which convened twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays, was all important in the shtetl. As with tradition from ancient Jewish history, Mondays and Thursday were the days, along with Shabbat, when the Torah was read. Jewish children were not particularly welcomed in the local Polish schools, so at the age of 3, Arvey began a ending cheder with several other children at the home of the local melamed (teacher). Yiddish was the only language Arvey ever learned as a child–not even any Polish–and he was taught not science, math or history but only the Alef Bet and the Torah. He was
however, surrounded by a warm and loving extended family of 33 people.
In the summer of 1935, as Arvey’s cherished grandfather was dying, Arvey’s uncle, Morris, and his wife, Sarah, came with to visit their father/father-in-law one last time. They had emigrated to the United States in 1910 and were doing well. Arvey’s grandfather told Morris that Poland was becoming a very bad place for Jews and prevailed upon him to take Arvey, Sanford, and three other cousins back to the U.S. with him. Morris did so, but when they traveled (by horse and buggy) to Warsaw to obtain visas, the cousins were not allowed to leave Poland. Only Arvey and Sanford were allowed to travel with Morris and Sarah to the U.S., voyaging, as mandated, on a Polish ship to New York and then by train directly to Chicago. Arvey and Sanford did not have to enter the U.S. through Ellis Island because they were traveling with U.S. citizens. It took another 3 years before Morris was able to bring the three other cousins out of Poland.
Arvey was 8 years old when he arrived in America and was amazed at the paved streets, lights, cars, buses, radio and indoor plumbing. He did not know one word of English.
