Dear Friends of the CASCC,

As a member of the FUNraisers committee, which organized the first Dancing

with the Spartanburg Stars event, I had an opportunity to learn more about the

Cancer Association and all that it does to help our cancer-fighting community.

In 2007 I was flattered to be invited to join the board of one of the finest,

most dedicated and hard-working non-profit organizations in Spartanburg.

My flattery became humility as I learned more about the dedication and

determination of our donors, staff and board members.

Often times it is easy for staff and board members to get caught up in

the day-to-day challenges of the Cancer Association. However, a visit to the

office on any given day quickly puts things in perspective and I realize what a

huge impact we have on the lives of our clients. On a recent visit I witnessed

the smile on a woman’s face as she selected a wig and experienced feeling

“attractive” again. I met a young man who was bald from treatment, but was

excitedly optimistic about his acceptance to USC-Upstate. These are just two

examples on a specific day, and they encourage me to work harder to do

more for the organization.

I want to thank each of you for your donations of time and money. I also

want to encourage you to visit our office so you, too, can appreciate the

extent to which your support is improving the lives of our clients. It will

also help you realize how much more needs to be done. Together we are

making a difference, and together we can do more.

Dear Friends,

When I was a child, I loved being outside on warm summer evenings. My

brothers and I loved gazing at the stars. I remember the feelings of wonder,

comfort and promise those stars brought. Wonder that there could be so many

and that their light could reach me from so far away; comfort that they would

always be there; and the promise that life was filled with endless possibilities.

Today, hearing hope return to the voices of those we serve, I am reminded of

that time. I feel each client’s wonder when they learn all the ways we can help

them, I see how comforted they are, knowing that they aren’t alone and I rejoice

in the promise that hope springs eternal. For each client who comes though

our door is on a journey of hope, made possible by you, our stars, who give so

graciously of your time and money.

There are stars who generously volunteer and stars who graciously donate. There

are stars who loyally serve on our Board, offering guidance and encouraging

others to join us. And the stars who comprise our wonderful staff, coordinating

our efforts and shining so brightly each day as they lovingly serve our clients.

Together we form a constellation of hope.

When I look at you, my fellow stars, I am amazed by the opportunities we’ve

received and the goals we’ve accomplished. We have formed a shining beacon

of hope for all those we serve. Thank you for shining so brightly and fulfilling

that promise that life is, in fact, filled with endless possibilities.

The Cancer Association is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation dedicated to

providing quality of life services to area residents facing the challenges of

cancer in our communities through screenings, education and direct services.

No reimbursement is received by Medicare, Medicaid or any insurance

company. Nor is the client charged for services provided. The majority of

our funding comes from donations, memorials and fundraising events.

We provided critical supplies including nutritional supplements, bras & breast

prostheses, ostomy & home care supplies, wigs & toiletry items, and loaned

hospital equipment. We offered gas cards for treatment transportation and

assistance with medications. We held health fairs and gave presentations to

community clubs, businesses and churches. We offered free cancer screenings,

smoking cessation classes and have an extensive library of literature available

for our clients. In addition, we offered emotional support to those who were

truly in need.

The light of our love radiates throughout the community, providing

comfort and nurturing hope.

against cancer. We educate our com-

munity about the importance of early

detection and offer screenings that

help save lives.

Counseling Connecting patients and their loved ones with professionals trained to help them

manage the stresses of a positive diagnosis is another way we ease the burdens of

our clients. We refer our clients to other organizations who provide food stamps and

assistance with living expenses. Our network of relationships and experience with

them understand their situations and make the best choices about their care.

Our extensive library offers educational materials in a variety of mediums

from audio recordings to books, to pamphlets and internet access for cancer

and health-related searches.

Financial AssistanceRelieving some of the financial burden of medication and

transportation can be an enormous aid to our clients. We

help patients get the care they need with gas cards and

financial allocations for cancer prescriptions to ease their

stress and help them stay focused on getting well.

Gifts in Kind CenterThe United Way of the Piedmont offers a “Gifts in Kind Center”, which allows non-profits

to join for an annual membership charge. Representatives from the Cancer Association

shop weekly for various household items including toilet paper, toothpaste, shampoo,

personal hygiene products and cleaning supplies. In turn, once a month clients are able

to “shop” at the Cancer Association office for the items they need.

FUNDRAISING EVENTS 2011

The Cancer Association’s work would be

impossible if not for the enthusiasm of our

donors and sponsors. We strive to create

opportunities to encourage involvement

in and publicity for our cause. Throughout

the year we offer fun-filled ways to inspire

new donors to help us light the way.

In January we hosted our second annual “JaBB” (Just a Big Bash)

event at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium. Two hundred fifty

party-goers raised $21,445 on a night when much of Spartanburg

remained house-bound after a storm brought the city 7 inches of snow.

There is joy and healing in coming together for a cause. Knowing that

the gift of our time, energy and dollars will help our community in monu-

mental ways, is empowering. Time has taught us that the more we give the

more light we share, until the brilliance of our hearts outshines all else.

Such was the case when Chris Cannon of Cannon Roofing presented 2011’s Danc-

ing with the Spartanburg Stars event in honor of his mother, Jeanne Lytle Cannon.

The event was held on April 8th at Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium. On that beau-

tiful night, six hundred-fifty stars came together to shine light and love on our cause.

Nine professional dancers were partnered with nine wonderful community

volunteers to compete and raise money in a ballroom dancing competition.

After months of hard work learning and practicing choreography, hearts and feet

were light as each couple floated across the dance floor, doing their very best to

entertain and inspire. The entire audience was invited to cast a vote for the winning

duo. In the end Betty Montgomery & Glenn Gordy were awarded first place and

Dorothy Josey & Gordy Owens were first runners up. But our clients, the cancer

patients in our community, were the true winners, as together we raised a brilliant

$348,877. That the challenges of this disease could inspire such a beautiful even-

ing is a testament to the power each of us has when we come together to shine the

light of love.

In June, motorcycle riders gathered once again to raise awareness

of cancer and the CASCC with our second annual Cruisin’ Cause

We Care event. Riders enjoyed a 100-mile escorted ride through

Spartanburg and Cherokee Counties. At the end of the ride,

participants enjoyed a meal together and one lucky rider won a

scooter. 151 participants raised $8,209.

· Our clients enjoy generous services in a personal atmosphere.

· Our office is less than three miles from both Gibbs Cancer Center and The Cancer Center of the Carolinas.

· Our staff has over 19 combined years of experience assisting cancer patients.

· Our application process is simple with no waiting time.

· Our services are provided at the time of application.

· We offer monthly allocations until our clients are in remission.

· We are the recipients of the United Way of the Piedmont Award for Program Excellence for the years 2008, 2009,

2010 and 2011.

· We have a 98% Client Satisfaction rating.

· The Cancer Association is a unique organization, solely dedicated to providing goods and support services to

cancer patients in Spartanburg and Cherokee counties.
