Frequently Asked Questions

Whom can I contact for help with my child's education?

Every school district has a local liaison. The Hearth Project is available to assist you and your child.

When you enroll your child in a new school, you should ask to meet the teacher. You should make

contact with the teacher every so often to talk about how your child is doing in school.

The school counselor can help your child deal with changes and challenges. Share with this person any

information about how your child is acting at home or things she or he is dealing with that might affect

his/her schoolwork.

Other school personnel helpful to know are the principal, school secretary, bus driver, school social

worker and school nurse.

How will Hearth help my child?

Hearth will ensure you have been advised of your child's rights, will assist you in determining which

school is best for your child, will set up free lunch for your child, will assist you with securing school

supplies for your child if needed and resources are available, will facilitate the transportation of your

child to and from their school of origin, and will provide you with referrals to agencies within the

community that may be able to help you and your family.

Should I keep my child in their school of origin or should I move them to the local school?

Consider the following:

o How old is your child?

o How much time would your child spend commuting to and from their school of origin?

o How long do you expect to be in this living arrangement? Do you expect to stay in this area?

o How attached is your child to their school? Would changing schools be upsetting to your child?

o Are there safety issues to consider?

What can I do to help my child in school?

Make sure your child goes to school everyday and gets plenty of rest; provide a quiet place for your

child to do homework; pay attention to your child's health and take care of problems early on; read to

your child everyday, for older children, have them read to you; listen to what your child shares with you

and talk about any problems he or she is having; encourage your child to participate in class and school

activities.

Keksyon/Repons

Ki moun mwen kapab kontakte pou ede mwen konsènan edikasyon pitit mwen an?

Chak distri lekòl gen yon kontak lokal.

Pataje ak moun

sa a nenpòt enfòmasyon konsènan kouman pitit fi oswa pitit gason ou ap aji lakay la, oubyen pwoblèm

li genyen ki kapab afekte travay lekòl li.

Lòt moun ou merite konnen nan pèsonèl lekòl la se direktè a, sekretè lekòl la, chofè bis la, travayè

sosyal la ak enfimyè lekòl la.

Kouman Hearth pral ede pitit mwen an?

Hearth pral asire li yo te ba w tout enfòmasyon konsènan dwa pitit ou a genyen, li pral ede w jwenn ki

lekòl ki pi bon pou pitit ou, li pral fè pitit ou a jwenn manje gratis, li pral ede pitit ou a jwenn materyèl li

bezwen pou lekòl li si nesesè e si gen rekou ki disponib, li pral fasilite transpò pitit ou kote y’ap depoze l

e vin chache l nan lekòl li te ye anvan an, epi l’ap ba w referans ajans ki nan kominote a ki kapab ede

ou menm ak fanmi ou.

Èske mwen dwe kite pitit mwen an nan lekòl li te ye anvan an oswa èske mwen dwe wetire li pou mete

li nan lekòl zòn nan?

Konsidere bagay sa yo:

o Ki laj pitit ou a?

o Ki kantite tan pitit ou a pran pou li ale e retounen lekòl kote li te ye anvan an?

o Konbe tan ou konte pase kote w’ap viv kounye a? Èske w konte rete nan zòn sa a?

o Èske pitit ou a atache ak lekòl kote li ye a? Èske chanje lekòl pap bay pitit ou a pwoblèm?

o Èske gen keksyon sekirite ki ta merite konsidere?

Mission

Ridge Career Center will assess, prepare, and place individuals in successful and rewarding careers in an increasingly competitive and changing employment market.

Vision

Ridge Career Center will be Polk County's premier workforce training institution.

The Ridge Philosophy

Our basic philosophy at Ridge is that students will be better prepared to enter the job market if their

training closely resembles on-the-job situations. The goal of instructors is to assist students in

acquiring the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to gain entry into and advance in an occupation.

Therefore, each training program is based on technical knowledge which applies to the chosen

occupation, performance of valid job tasks and the cultivation of healthy job related attitudes and

values. Students are provided with effective learning experiences designed to help them attain

relevant job competencies.

Every effort is made at Ridge to assist students in reaching an informed decision about entering a

career training program best suited to their individual needs and aptitudes. Students are encouraged

to choose their programs after exploring their potential choices and discovering their own strengths

and weaknesses, aptitudes and interests. Guidance is also available to help students succeed in their

chosen program and secure employment when leaving Ridge.

It is also Ridge's philosophy to accept students at the level of competency they have achieved upon

entering the program and provide competencies to give them training for various jobs. At Ridge, we

make it possible for each student to meet both short- and long-range employment goals. We can

tailor instruction to the wide variety of student needs through our policy of open-entry and open-exit,

self-paced, individualized instruction. Students enter and exit Ridge when personal employment

considerations dictate. Students progress through learning experiences at their own rate and focus on

attaining the competencies necessary to meet their personal career goals.

Ridge's philosophy, when put into practice, means that each program resembles as closely as

possible the job setting for which training is being offered. Equipment, tools, supplies and

environment closely match those on the job. Each program is managed by instructors who are not

only skilled workers in their trade or business but are well trained in the professional skills of teaching

their business or trade to others. Our instructors exhibit pride in their profession and enthusiasm in

teaching it to others.

Through Florida KidCare, the state of Florida offers health insurance for children from birth through age 18, even if one or both parents are working. It includes four different parts. When you apply for the insurance, Florida KidCare will check which part your child may qualify for based on age and family income.

MEDIKIDS: children ages 1 through 4 HEALTHY KIDS: children ages 5 through 8 CHILDREN’S MEDICAL SERVICES NETWORK: children birth through 18 who have special health

care needs.

MEDICAID: children birth through 18. A child who has other health insurance may still qualify for Medicaid.

Some of the services Florida KidCare covers are:

Doctor visits Metal Health Dental

Check-ups and shots Hospital Surgery

Prescriptions Emergencies Vision and hearing

There are several ways to apply for Florida KidCare:

If you applied for Florida KidCare before, call 1-888-540-5437 to update your information by telephone, or

Apply online or print an application and instructions at floridakidcare.org

Eligibility Florida KidCare is for children, not adults. To qualify for premium assistance, a child must:

Be under age 19

Be insured

Meet income eligibility requirements

Be a U.S. Citizen or qualified non-citizen

Not be eligible for Medicaid

Not be in a public institution Cost

There is no charge for Medicaid for children (KidCare Medicaid)

For other Florida KidCare programs, monthly premiums depend on your household’s size and income. Most families pay $15 or $20 a month. If you need to pay more, Florida KidCare will let you know.

Make checks or money orders payable to Florida KidCare. Do not send cash. If your child (or children) is approved for Medicaid or denied coverage, your premium payment will be refunded.

You may have to pay small charges or co-payments for some services.

A child who is a member of a federally recognized American Indian or Alaskan Native tribe may qualify for no-cost Florida KidCare coverage.

Families who are not eligible for premium

assistance may buy

Florida KidCare

(MediKids or Healthy Kids)

at the “full pay” premium rate.

Non-residents must register their automobiles in Florida if they engage in a trade or occupation or are employed in Florida or their children attend public schools in Florida. Non-resident exemptions may be applied to college or university students who are in Florida for less than six months in an accredited work-study program recognized by the State of Florida, or to any nonresident enrolled as a full-time student in a Florida institution of higher learning, or to recreational vehicles not located in Florida for at least six consecutive months. Vehicle registrations for automobiles may be obtained at one of the Tax Collector's Offices. To receive a vehicle registration for an automobile you must have the following items:

A registration renewal notice or previously issued registration. (Note: If these are not available, the tag number, title number or vehicle identification number may provide enough information.)

Also required for automobiles, current proof of Florida Property Damage Liability and Personal Injury Protection insurance, including the insurance company's name and policy number.

Registration and Renewal Florida law requires automobile tags and registrations to be renewed before they expire. Florida vehicle registrations and tags (license plates) expire as follows:

For automobiles owned by individuals, the expiration date is the birthday of the first owner listed on the registration;

For leased automobiles, the expiration date is indicated on the vehicle registration;

For company owned automobiles, the expiration date is June 30th;

For 9 passenger automobiles for hire and trucks over 5,000 lbs., the annual expiration date is December 31st (Note: Six month registrations issued to these types of vehicles expire May 31st).

Budget Help Many folks have difficulty finding ways to make ends meet. Here are some suggestions to

get control of your money.

1. Living within your means - If there is more money going out than coming in there

needs to be some decisions and changes in spending. This is crucial to

resolving money problems. Plan out expenses you know you have regularly and

make a plan to cover those expenses. If you have more output than input,

consider what can be eliminated.

2. Have an emergency fund - Stuff happens! Even if it is just a few dollars, put it

away for those times when life happens as it invariably will.

3. Eliminate living on credit - Folks who use credit to cover the cost of their basic

needs like food and shelter or to reward themselves with "fun" toys will often find

themselves in a deep hole of debt that can be difficult to climb out of. If you want

something, instead of reaching for the plastic get an envelope and put a dollar

inside. Add to that dollar whenever you can. You will probably enjoy that item

much more once you get it!

Complete the budget on the following page. Spend some time thinking about what you

learn from this. Talk to your partner if you have one.
