    Writing a NarrativeBy David 5K

    Orientation

I trudged through the lush green grass and examined my surroundings. This new land was noticeably different to my hometown back in China. Strange, tall animals hopped across the lush green pastures and the sky was pure blue.

Brick and permanent houses were still scarce in the vast sea of green and there were little signs of human modification. As we jogged towards the goldfields, I noticed that people began to gather, all seeking for a fortune. When we bustled through the crowds, some whispered to their companions, pointing at us while others burst into peals of laughter.

“Dad! I want to get out of this place quickly. People are teasing us because we look different! I feel like we’re the odd one out in Australia. There are not many Chinese people here.” I whispered, gripping my dad’s hand tightly.

“We will reach Ophir soon. Don’t worry. The people there will be too focused on digging to notice us.”

After what seemed like an eternity, we finally reached Ophir, NSW. Makeshift houses were scattered around nearby. Miners used all sorts of tools to dig. Some of them fought and argued for territory. Immediately, Dad took out his gold washing cradle an searched for a small space to dig while Mum and I set up the tent.

BodyThings had not gone as we had planned. We

thought that there was plenty gold here and we could dig up at least one golden nugget every day. However, for days, Dad returned at very late in the night, empty handed and frustrated.

I was often left alone in the house because Mum tried to earn some money by sewing clothes for the rich and make ends meet. Weeks past in vain and hope became dimmer and dimmer. Soon meat disappeared from our dining table, followed by vegetables. My parents realised that we could not sustain this kind of life style for long.

“If we still don’t dig up a gold nugget today, we will have to return to China.” Dad sighed and headed out of the door. But that day, it was

hardly noon when the door burst open abruptly.

“LOOK AT WHAT I FOUND! A GOLD NUGGET!!!!”

I jumped back in fright and landed on my back. I hadn’t recovered my senses until I noticed that it was Dad. He embraced me and jumped up and down in ecstasy, as a child would, holding the gold in his hands with great care.

It was quite large, about the size of my palm. Specks of other minerals such as quartz inside the nugget was visible. It glinted brightly in the sunlight.

Beside me, Dad already started his story.

“When I shoveled in the dirt, I heard a dull tapping sound in the cradle as I shook it. At first I thought it was a stone but after I added in water to wash the dirt out, I found this. The other miners looked at me with envy so I rushed out of there in case a fight broke out.”

We debated where to put the nugget and in the end we decided to tuck it inside the bottom of Mum’s sewing box.

However, that night, I tossed and turned in my bed, uneasily as I remembered the people who laughed at us when we were entering the gold fields. I know that gold could spark the evil in men and that there are many greedy people outside who are willing to commit crime for it. Hours passed. Suddenly, a dull tapping sound broke the deadly silence. My stomach lurched and a shiver ran down my spine. Who could be here so late at night? It was one in the morning. Listening intently, I heard the sound become louder and louder. I crawled out of bed and crept towards the sound. Cautiously, I peeped out of the window and could hardly make out a dark figure outside the house. I sneaked back to my snoring parents.

“Mum! Dad! There’s a someone outside our house! I think he’s coming to rob our nugget! Quick!” I whispered. My parents wrenched themselves out of bed. My dad grabbed a wooden cudgel hidden under his bed and rushed outside. I huddled together with my mum, shivering. There was a loud sudden crash followed by the men’s heavy panting. Then there was a cry of pain.

“GET OUT OF HERE!!!!!” Dad roared. The commotion died down.

ResolutionMy mum and I rushed to the door. Outside, Dad stooped, hands on his knees, breathing hard.

“Are you alright?” I gazed at him, anxiously.

“Don’t worry, I’m alright. Just a few small scratches on my arms. He didn’t bring any weapons, fortunately,” he grinned at me, wheezing.

“Let’s move away from here. It’s quite unsafe in Ophir. I think Sydney will be better. We can sell that golden nugget and start a new life,” Mum suggested.

Anticipation and hope surged through my heart.

“Yes! Dad could be a builder, Mum could be a tailor and I could go to school! How wonderful!” I beamed

    The EarthBy Alona 56S

It all started with asteroids surrounding the sun, all those little asteroids smashed together and created all the planets we know of, including the earth.

The earth was a hot planet with volcanoes all around it with lava. Then a planet the size of mars named Theia crashed into earth. Suddenly, the moon was formed.

A lot of asteroids kept on having a collision course with earth. They were not the same size as earth, but they had ice covering them. Because of that, the earth started to have water in it’s surface. Soon earth was all covered in water, with some ice in the top.

After a few years, the new tiny organic life finally came. A tiny island, then the first water creature came on the land, pretty soon the creature grew legs to walk on land. Then lizards started laying eggs, which meant there were more animals/creatures/sea animals.

After a while, the dinosaur age came. They were everywhere around their home planet, the earth. Life was perfect… until, there was a asteroid, aiming for earth. It came in nearly the speed of light. All the dinosaurs had died, the ones left had to eat each other because there was no food left.

Earth was once again a hot planet with volcanoes all around it with lava. Though, it didn’t last for long. The earth, again had water in it, with another organic life. Then, new animals formed, like…monkeys!

Years past, soon they turned into cave men, then, the human era formed. The underwater sea had corals inside it, and grass, fish arrived to the party, woo hoo!

    Baking CookiesBy Isabella 5K

I am probably one out of many people who had to stay at home. Utter boredom! Because my younger brother Lucas and I were lazing around the house doing nothing, my mum bought some cookie mix so that we can bake some cookies and have something to do. We’ve done a lot of baking before, but we never get tired of making a mess, so we were excited!

First, we washed our hands very thoroughly with soap, we didn’t want any germs going into the cookies! My brother opened the pack and I started measuring out the ingredients. I cracked an egg, cut some butter and weighed it to the right amount. We were definitely getting in to it

I let my brother add in the cookie mix. He enjoyed shaking out the excess powder and concentrated on getting all of it in the bowl. He mixed the ingredients together for a while and watched as the egg, butter and cookie mix form a sticky paste.

But that was okay, because we still had to knead it with our hands. It was a little hard to get all the flour in there, but soon we had a soft, oily (from butter) dough. We made quite a mess there, but at least we finished the hardest part.

Now the fun part! Using the chocolate buttons included in the box, Lucas (my brother) and I gently pushed balls of dough down and placed the buttons on it. We tried out different techniques and used everyday things to create wonderful patterns and designs. Don’t you like the one that I used with the fork?

There go both trays in the oven! While my mum preheated the oven to 180 degree, we ate a few of the leftover buttons. There were plenty of extra ones to share with family!

After 15 minutes, we took the trays out of the oven. The cookies were a little larger, but who cares? More for us! They were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, warm and sweet, just how I like it! They were delicious! Anyways, if you are stuck at home like me and my brother, find something fun or time consuming. It doesn’t necessarily have to be baking. We also tried an obstacle course, making our own tune on the piano and building the tallest block tower we possibly could. Have fun!
