The NSW Department of Education’s School Excellence Framework describes wellbeing as a core business of a school. Wellbeing is also reflected in the Department of Education’s strategic goal that ‘every student is known, valued and cared for’.

Wellbeing at Ashfield Public School is about students who feel motivated and satisfied as learners and successfully engage in a supportive education that meets their needs, satisfies their interests and progresses their academic, social, emotional and physical growth.

Our whole school approach to wellbeing involves clearly defining what wellbeing is. We do this via our 10 wellbeing choices which are reinforced each day on morning lines, in the classroom and on the playground. These choices articulate a range of behaviours that support students to have positive experiences at school and to be empowered to actively involve themselves in their education.

Our whole school approach also involves sustaining a safe learning environment. The school takes a firm stance on anti-bullying, we explicitly teach No Go Tell and support all students in positive behaviour for learning to reduce problem behaviours and develop respectful relationships and interactions.

Our whole school approach includes the Triple E (Enrichment, extension and engagement) program which is about involving students in a range of activities that develop a sense of belonging and high enjoyment. It includes our Future Focused program, with philosophical thinking to support social and emotional learning. Philosophical thinking is about acquiring and applying the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, and make responsible decisions.

Important to our whole school approach is collecting and analysing data on wellbeing. For example, the school uses the Year 4-6 Tell Them From Me Survey which provides an important student voice to measure student wellbeing. We also use Sentral, an online management system, to document the tallies of individual students as they earn Certificates of Success, School Awards and School Medals. Sentral also documents student participation in extra-curricular activities. Sentral data is used to identify and close equity gaps that can occur in a large school.

Wellbeing in a school is a serious business. At Ashfield Public School it is a planned and systematic evidence based approach. It is about sustaining and growing whole school practices that enable our students to experience their education with a state of positive mood and attitude, resilience and satisfaction with self, and fulfilling experiences and relationships with others.

Welcome back to all Kindergarten students and parents! As Term 1 came to an end we enjoyed some fabulous events including the Easter Hat Parade, in which all students looked outstanding in their colourful and spectacular hats!

We have had an action-packed first few weeks of Term 2. Well done to all students who have completed and returned their home reading journal during the holidays and have collected their certificates of success upon arrival back to school.

This Term students will be participating in the Athletics program implemented by Dance Fever Multi Sport, all Kindergarten students have been thoroughly enjoying the program and being active outside. In these classes, we have been learning new athletics skills and knowledge, whilst having fun!

Last week we had a wonderful time at our Cross country and Walkathon at Ashfield Park and we are proud of the Kindergarten students as they walked safely to and from school. Students completed the Walkathon with a Year 6 buddy and walked while collecting stars for our school along the way. Thank you to all who have handed in their sponsorship money and participated in the event!

In Science and Technology we have been learning about Australian animals and have commenced our Speaking and Listening presentations. Please ensure to check the News note sent out in students home reading folders for the weekly Australian animal topics. We have had some interesting and well-presented talks so far about Echidnas, Bandicoots, Koalas and Spiders!

We are looking forward to a fun filled term ahead of us! Keep up the fantastic work!

Welcome to term 2! We hope you had a restful and safe holiday with friends and family. This term we have some great events such as the walkathon, public speaking competition, and an excursion to the Sea Life Aquarium.

In English we are studying the Magic Beach by Alison Lester. Her texts include rich figurative language and detailed illustrations. Please feel free to borrow it or other titles by Alison Lester at your local library.

In mathematics we are learning to add bigger numbers using a range of strategies including: friends of 10, counting on, doubles and the split strategy. Try rolling two dice and asking your child which strategies they like to use.

In Science and technology we are investigating living creatures and their environments. We will study how plants and animals grow and change. In week 5 we will visit the Sea Life Aquarium and learn from experts about our local marine environment.

This term we continue our lessons in the outdoor classroom. We’ll be doing a 3D shape hunt later in the term and sketching objects in our environment. We are also being active and engaged in weekly athletics programs. Log into Twitter to see the great videos and photos teachers are posting each week.

There are so many great Triple-E initiatives for students to get involved with. These include ukulele, choir, drama and table tennis. All students are encouraged to come along and have a try!

If you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to come and talk to your child’s teacher or another friendly member of staff.

We are looking forward to another term of learning and fun!

Stage 2Stage Page Welcome back to another exciting term of learning!

Term One culminated in the celebration of learning and commitment in the school’s inclusive environment. The theme of the Honour Assembly was the students’ writing skills. Stage Two students confidently articulated their understanding of persuasive texts to the audience. A big round of applause to all the students for the fantastic effort!

Our school takes pride in its rich multicultural community and the cultural wealth they bring to the school. This was evident in the Harmony Day event which featured a colourful cultural program and magnificent parade of national flags from all around the world. In the afternoon the students participated in learning experiences from various countries, including Japan, Korea, Greece, Vietnam and India.

We are in Week 3 of this term and teaching and learning is in full swing. From learning about the ‘explorers’ in History to exploring ‘Earth and Space’ in Science, from learning about the creative expression of artist Ken Done to using our own creative flair in writing imaginative and persuasive texts.

Another exciting program this term is the public speaking program where each student from K to 6 will be presenting a speech to their peers. We cannot wait to listen all those fabulous speeches!

A healthy mind in a healthy body. The students are thrilled and already enjoying comprehensive athletics program this term. It aims at building fundamental motor skills along with further developing their resilience, team work, time management and leadership.

Looking forward to all the fun and excitement this term holds for us!

Stage 3Stage PageOn Thursday the 21st of March, Ashfield Public School held its annual Harmony Day celebration. There was a sea of colour through the hall at the assembly as students walked down the aisle holding their flag from their culture. The students then went back to their classrooms to do activities from a certain culture. We can’t wait for next years celebration!

Ashfield has had a great start to the Winter PSSA season for 2019. After completing our first two games of Soccer and Netball, it is great to see so many participants displaying such a high level of sportsmanship and cooperation with their teams and towards other schools. We are all excited to see how the rest of the season goes for all involved. Well done for such a wonderful start!

In week 2 of term 2 Ashfield Public School had their annual Walkathon and Cross Country. It was great to see so many students participating in both events and enjoying the wonderful day at Ashfield Park. Stage 3 had a blast with their Year 1 and Kindergarten buddies. Well done to everyone!

Year 5 had a wonderful time at Newington for the Literature Festival. Sean Choolburra is one of the nation’s funniest and most engaging Aboriginal comedians. He presented a wonderful performance which had all students captivated and in stitches. We walked away from Newington all feeling inspired and in awe of Sean’s brilliant personality and use of music and dance which made students excited to learn about Aboriginal culture.

Our debating teams, Ashfield Red and Ashfield Blue, are preparing for the Premier’s debating challenge this term. In Week 4, 8 students will attend a debating workshop hosted by The Arts Unit at Lewisham Public School. This is an opportunity to develop skills vital to debating including teamwork, and formulating rebuttal and arguments.

Stage 3 have been focusing on developing the skills for athletics with all students participating in the Fit Futures program. The aim of the program is to improve fundamental athletic skills, knowledge and understanding in an inclusive and fun environment. Skill development will involve track and field events as well as hurdles, high jump, long jump and sprints.

Impact of mobile digital devices in schoolsA growing concern is about the impact that non-educational use of mobile digital devices in schools can have on student wellbeing.

The evidence behind the effect of mobile digital devices on student wellbeing in schools is both mixed and limited. There is some evidence that cyberbullying is increasing, but this link cannot be directly attributed to mobile digital device use in school. There is also evidence that phones do distract students from learning, although this evidence largely comes from studies undertaken at the tertiary level.

Some evidence shows that use of mobile digital devices may hinder social interaction which can lead to lower levels of psychological wellbeing, but other research shows that mobile digital device use may enhance important peer and family relationships.

The same mix of evidence is found with regard to mental and physical health. In terms of the most effective response to mobile digital devices in schools, the evidence similarly varies.

There is some evidence that banning mobile phones may improve academic outcomes for low-achieving students, but other evidence shows that students are adept at ‘getting around’ bans on mobile digital device use in schools.

Other researchers state that a ban is not the answer, that students need to be taught ‘digital literacy’ instead, and that mobile digital devices will simply be subsumed within existing school regulations and controls.

In May 2018, Finnish education expert Pasi Sahlberg claimed smartphones were distracting students from reading, school-related work, physical activity, and high-quality sleep. He has also speculated that mobile phone-related distraction is the main reason for Australia’s slide down the PISA rankings.

The NSW Government reviewed mobile digital device use in NSW schools to address these concerns:

education.nsw.gov.au/about-us/strategies-and-reports/media/documents/mobile-phone-review.pdf

The review looked at the evidence related to the benefits and risks of non-educational mobile digital devices in schools for children and young people; and approaches and practices to support students’ use of such devices in safe, responsible, and informed ways.

Book ReportThe Indian in the Cupboard Complete Collection by Lynne Reid Banks

“Omri cautiously turned the key and opened the cupboard door. The Indian was gone! Omri peered into the dark corners. Suddenly, he saw him… And he was alive.”

At first, Omri is unimpressed with the plastic Indian toy he is given for his birthday. But when he puts it

in his old cupboard and locks the door with a very special key, Omri’s life suddenly changes. When he meets Little Bull things are never really the same again.

This magical and hair-raising adventure of friendship and secrets are sure to captivate readers of all ages. I would rate it 4.5/5.

You may have seen videos or pictures of a cat happily lapping up milk from a bowl. However, most cats are lactose intolerant and having milk can cause tummy pains, tummy cramps, vomiting or diarrhoea. So if you have a cat, stick to plain water. However, if you

Deadly Kids Report

Australian Aboriginal activist, Rodney Kelly, has been campaigning for the return of the Gwaegal shield for the last two years. Kelly is a sixth-generation descendant of the warrior Cooman and says that the shield was seized from his ancestor in 1770 by Captain James Cook during the first encounter between the British and Indigenous Australians at Botany Bay.

In August 2016, the Australian Parliament passed a motion supporting Indigenous Gweagal ownership of the shield and calling for its restitution. In 2016, the British Museum loaned the shield to the National Museum of Australia in Canberra for an exhibition called Encounters: Revealing stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander objects from the British Museum. Kelly’s family complained of their “disgust” at the Museum’s decision to loan — rather than return — the shield to Australia.

Dear Sincere Sienna and Loving Lily.

I have someone who I hang out with a lot. We’ve been friends since the start of Year 2, but recently some other people have started sitting with us. At first I was fine with it, but now my friends have started saying rude jokes and stopped sitting with me at break. Whenever I try to go up to them and ask them what happened, she just brushes me off and acts as if she doesn’t know me.

Sincerely,

Loner. Dear Loner,

Some people change while being around others, and can be rude to you, but nice to you without them. What you should do is try to talk to them about the issue with that person in a calm and respectful and to see why they’ve left you out. If that doesn’t work try to meet new people or play with other friends you might have. If you have any further issues please talk to your teacher or a trusted adult.

Sincerely,

SCHOOL UNIFORM DONATIONS

NEEDED Please consider donating unwanted uniforms that are clean and useable to the second hand uniform stall. Your donations help to give a family an affordable uniform and raise money to support the school at the same time! Uniforms can be dropped at the front office or handed in at the stall Wednesday and Friday mornings from 8:30am (next to assembly).

GARDEN CLUB

Thank you to our committed gardening club members who have been using their green thumbs in our Harmony Garden and Courtyard area every Monday afternoon. We have watered our plants through the incredibly warm weather, removed weeds and mulched our gardens. We were also able to plant some spinach, lettuce, basil and mint this term. Gardening is a wonderful opportunity to be in a multi-sensory environment where children can touch and feel plants and be exposed to the amazing scents of growing herbs.

We look forward to planting some more vegetables next term with the generous voucher provided to us by Bunnings Ashfield.

Democracy Sausage – we need your help! This Saturday 18th of May is election day and Ashfield Public School has been chosen as a polling booth. We will hold a sausage sizzle the entire day at the school to raise funds for classroom resources for our kids. We have created a Sign Up sheet for volunteers to put their name down. Minimum shifts are an hour but you can sign up for as many shifts as you want. We need lots of volunteers to make this a success!

Please go to https://signup.com/go/YsfYguQ to sign up or visit the school E News app for the direct link.

Comedy for a CauseThank you to our sponsors and supporters

Our Comedy for a Cause event is coming up next weekend. Have you got your ticket yet? We want to say a big thank you to our principal sponsor – Ray White Summer Hill, and our

secondary sponsors Summer Hill Vets, Mental Maths Abacus and Ashfield Club. Without these sponsors the success of our school events would not be possible. We would like to also acknowledge the many businesses and individuals who have donated items for our silent auction.

This year we’re running the silent auction online and you can start bidding now at: www.airauctioneer.com/Ashfield. We will be adding items right up until the day of the comedy on Saturday 25th of May and final bids will close at 9pm that day. Remember, all the funds raised from these auctions go directly to the school – so don’t think about the value of the item, just bid big! Here are some of the businesses who have donated items: Envy Deli Cafe, Two Fat Butchers, 3 Tomatoes Cafe, Access Hair, Andiamo Restaurant, Art Est Art School, Ashbury Service Centre, Beats 905 Dance, Blake Education, Drum and Strum, Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre, Arts & Education Alliance, Five Dock Leisure Centre, Kid Artworx, Ki Martial Arts, Pratten Park Tennis Club, Sydney Olympic Park, Milk and Honey Photography, Abacus Mental Maths, and Rio Bar.
