A proficient teacher, as described by The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, must select and use relevant teaching strategies to develop the critical and creative thinking of all students.

Research proposes a dispositional approach to the teaching of thinking. This is about teachers modelling and explicitly teaching specific dispositions that give students the skills and ability to engage in, and sustain successful thinking as a lifelong pursuit.

While different research identifies different dispositions, there is consensus about the importance of dispositions as enabling good thinking. Some identified dispositions are:

1. The disposition to be broad and adventurous: Students are taught to be open-minded, to explore alternative views, and to be alert to narrow thinking. Teachers should create for students, a range of interesting and engaging learning opportunities, and a variety of ways for students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding.

2. The disposition toward sustained intellectual curiosity: Students are taught to probe, to find problems, to be alert for anomalies, to observe closely and to formulate questions. Teachers should

inspire and model a zest for inquiry and a wonder for learning.

3. The disposition to clarify and seek understanding: Students are taught to be alert to unclarity and to build conceptualisations. Teachers should model the desire to understand clearly and the motivation to seek connections and explanations.

4. The disposition to be planful and strategic: Students are taught to be alert to lack of direction and to formulate goals and plans. Teachers should nurture the drive in their students to set goals, to make and execute plans, and to envision outcomes.

5. The disposition to be intellectually careful: Students are taught to be alert to possible error or inaccuracy. Teachers should nurture the urge for precision, organisation and thoroughness.

6. The disposition to seek and evaluate reasons: Students are taught to question the given, to demand justification and be alert for the need for evidence. Teachers should enable time for and encourage investigation, and show value for the importance of mistakes as part of the learning process.

7. The disposition to be metacognitive: Students are taught to reflect on and evaluate the productiveness of their own thinking. Teachers should demonstrate how they question their own strategies for learning and how they evaluate the efficiency of their own performance.

Like all schools, it is the task of Ashfield Public School to instil in each of our students, the dispositions that are required for them to be creative and critical thinkers. It is our job to create the conditions where students are able to learn and apply the dispositions as they explore, probe, strategise, are reflective, adventurous and reasonable, and successfully engage in the world as effective and lifelong learners.

Welcome to Term 3! Kindergarten are back at school and enjoying so many new and exciting activities.

We have really enjoyed the rain during our first few weeks back at school because we are learning about weather systems in Science this term! We have been recording the daily weather in our weather diaries. Kindergarten have been so impressed by the fog, rainbows, and occasional sunshine.

This term, students are participating in weekly dance lessons. So far, we have already shared some of our 21st century dance moves like the floss and the dab, and we have also started learning our hip-hop dance routine. It has been such fun!

Kindergarten students have all been assigned a news day to share their news about a given topic each week. We have been so impressed to see students preparing posters and PowerPoints, and bringing in props to support their news. We look forward to hearing you all speak each week!

Welcome back everyone to Term 3! We are so excited to be back in the classroom and are ready for the wonderful term ahead. We have many fabulous things planned for this term, we will surely be busy bees, smiling our way through Term 3.

We have already begin our Dance Fever dance lessons where we are exploring different types of contemporary and classical dance. Check out our class Twitter pages for photos of our Hip Hop, 90s and Jive dance moves!

Stage One have begun their Chinese lessons with Miss Chi. Each class receives half an hour each week of direct instruction in Chinese and it is such a highlight for us all. We are learning to say different parts of the body in Chinese as well as learning some greetings. We as the term progresses we will learn more about Chinese culture as well.

In Week 5 we will host an online Science Fair as well as the Robocup. These events may look different this year but we are sure they will be enjoyed by all and be valuable learning experiences.

In Week 9 the whole school will be participating in an Environmental Art Show. It will be a great opportunity to share our creative endeavours will our community and showcase our amazing talents.

Stage One have also been lucky enough to reserve a spot in our new school community garden. We are still in the planning process of deciding what to plant in our garden. This will be a fun and rich experience where we will learn to have shared responsibility over planting and growing some edible plants.

Stage 2 are very excited to start this term with the dance program! We are looking forward to having Dance Fever come back to the school and teaching us fundamental skills for dance. Stage 2 have their dance lessons on a Monday and this will run for the duration of the term.

Our Literacy learning has hit the ground running. We have been reading persuasive texts such as Hey Little Ant by Hannah Hoose and The Day the Crayons Quit by Oliver Jeffers and writing some of our own persuasive texts. Children have specifically been looking at writing an engaging hook for an exposition.

The

News Room

Creative, Curious and Challenging thinking3C thinking is used to create new information by thinking of new ideas, reasons, and decisions. These ‘higher forms of thinking’ result in a variety of possible answers to a question. There are no right or wrong answers to recall.

Here are some examples of some examples of 3C thinking:

Creative Thinking

The ability to break away from dominant patterns stored in the brain in order to think of unusual solutions.

• Unusual alternatives: How many unusual uses can you think of for a newspaper?

• Unusual similarities: In how many ways is an elephant the same as a chair?

• Unusual consequences: What if there were no more birds in the world?

• Unusual reversals: What can’t you see?

• Unusual images: What does this line drawing remind you of?

• Unusual designs: What can you combine, reverse, eliminate, add to, use alternatives … in order to make a new breakfast cereal?

Curious Thinking

The ability to think of reasons for explaining why something has the features that it has.

• Shape: Why are coins round?

• Colour: Why are stop lights red? Why are road signs white on green?

• Parts: Why does a dog have four legs and not two or six?

• Material: Why are bottles made of glass?

• Size: Why do turtles lay so many eggs and birds only a few?

Challenging or Critical Thinking

The ability to judge statements using relevant criteria or reasons.

• Fact/opinion: Why isn’t it a fact that dogs make better pets than cats?

• Believable/unbelievable: Why would or wouldn’t you believe a claim made by someone who said they saw a flying saucer last night?

• Relevant/irrelevant: What are some important or relevant things to tell people who are helping you to find your lost dog?

• Another point of view: What are some good and bad things about keeping animals in zoos?

• Making conclusions: What can and can’t you conclude if you see a man running quickly out of a shop?

• Biased/unbiased information: Is this advert biased or not?

Dear Moralistic Michelle and Vivacious Veya,

This kid in my class is very mean. She keeps stealing my stationery but I didn’t want to dob because she said that she would hurt me and my friends. What am I supposed to do?

From Amiable Ariel

Dear Amiable Ariel

We would suggest you to confide in your friends and one day go in a group to confront her about her vicious threats and demand her to apologise and give your stationery back. We all know what it feels like to have something that we love taken away from us and it is not a nice feeling. Good on you for coming to us!

Yours sincerely,
