FEBRUARY 14-23GREAT NW GLASS QUESTThe Camano Island Chamber of Commerce is delighted to welcome you to celebrate the 11th Annual Great Northwest Glass Quest. The Pacific Northwest is known throughout the world for its fine glass artists. Stanwood and Camano Island are part of that rich heritage, with many artists living and working here. In collaboration with the Camano Chamber of Commerce, artists Mark and Marcus Ellinger are giving everyone a chance to own a hand-blown glass ball simply by searching for it. The “treasure” is yours to find! Here’s how it works: pick up a Glass Quest Guide at any participating business, or down-load a copy from the Glass Quest site: www.thegreatnwglassquest.com. You can also download the Glass Quest App. The guide will tell you where to look for plastic clue balls which are turned in to receive a limited-edition, stamped and signed hand-blown glass treasure. There will be over 440 clue balls hidden over the course of the 10-day event. You can also participate in a free drawing every day you Quest by “checking-in” online as well as handing in a completed passport to be entered into a drawing. Take part in the Greatest Treasure Hunt in the Pacific Northwest! Photo by James M. Shipley.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 15RESTORING KAYAK POINT GOLF COURSE9am-3pm at 15711 Marine Dr., Stanwood. Snohomish County has permanently closed the 271 acre Kayak Point Golf Course and made it into a frisbee course. All of the fairways, greens, and sand traps have been abandoned and are growing invasive weeds like crazy. There is lots of landscaping work to be done around the parking lot and old club house. They have hired 2 people to restore it with tre-mendously limited resources, and need all the help they can find. Today they are hosting a work party, and are providing pizza. If you have any gardening sheers or tools to bring that would be helpful! Please bring a pair of rubber gloves, and dependable shoes you can do yard work in. Work will be dispersed and conquered in groups! Our community thanks you!!!!!!!!!!

VALENTINE FACT:

Candy hearts were originally

medical loz-enges. In 1847,

Boston pharma-cist Oliver Chase invented a ma-

chine that simpli-fied the lozenge

production process. Chase

shifted his focus to candy produc-tion with Necco wafers. 15 years

later Chase’s brother, Oliver Chase, devel-oped a way to

press words onto the candy lozenges with

a felt roller pad and vegetable food coloring.

The Stanwood Area Historical

Society asks, “Did You Know?”

Excerpts taken from the

“Stanwood Story”, written for the

Stanwood News by Alice Essex.

?

A good bear story amused friends of the Bear Hunters’ Club in Decem-ber 1927. A foursome, including Dr. J.J. Hjort, Victor Lilja, Fred Oberg and George Engebretsen, set out for bear in the woods not far from town. A 660 pounder was sighted, several shots were fired, but missed. All went for cover except Dr. Hjort, who soon found himself taking to the river for safety. When the beast headed for the woods, the others came to the Doctor’s aid with a cheering bon fire and all ended well, minus the bear. Every life, has its moments…so does every town. In March 1928, Stan-wood had one of its big moments when representatives of Metro-Gold-wyn-Mayer and Fox Film Companies came to town with cameras and movie gear. The occasion was a baseball game between two family teams…the J.W. Wagness and John Sande “nines”! In the eyes of the movie scouters it was most unusual for two families in one small town to have baseball teams comprised only of their sons. So it was that the movie men came and filmed the Wagness-Sande game, which as it happened, was won by the Sande brothers. The Sil-vana band played, the parents of each team were guests of honor, and the film was to be shown later at the Ideal Theater. The game also was carried in city papers complete with the M.G.M. picture. Two other events in 1928 brought more than local publicity…the opening of State Highway 530 and the opening of Steven’s Pass High-way. Local Kiwanians had planned considerable fanfare for the local cere-mony but all did not go as expected. In August, a party of State High-way officials made a surprise trip from Yakima to a Kiwanis luncheon meeting, announcing that they had come to open the new road. An impromptu ceremony followed and was witnessed only by Kiwanians and the state men. In September, the community shared vicariously in the Stevens Pass ribbon-cutting. Peter Henning, former county commissioner and pres-ident of the Stevens Pass Highway Association for development of the east-west route, was responsible for the local involvement. A Veteran of road building in Washington, Alaska and British Columbia, he was in-strumental in establishing Highway 530. In 1892 Mr. Henning tramped over the pass summit in the employ of James J. Hill of the Great North-ern. That transportation was uppermost then, as now, was evident in the to-do over the stage line changing is route to the new 530 road, miss-ing Stanwood. The town and surrounding communities combined and won the hassel after numerous meetings with bus officials. Transportation and shipping again came into the spotlight with the inauguration of three weekly trips to Stanwood by the Steamer Har-vester. To give the merchants better shipping service, she docked at the Stanwood City Dock on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays. The recent river improvement brought about the change, said the an-nouncement by the Skagit Navigation Co. that had served the area for 35 years. The company’s statement was accompanied by the comment, “Ship by boat on the Steamer Harvester. We help pay the taxes and don’t break the roads.” Further evidence of the importance of water shipping in the late 1920’s was the replacement and retirement of the oldest stern wheeler operating on Puget Sound- - The Steamer Lily of Stanwood. The tug E.A. English replaced her in 1928 and continued bringing logs to local mills. The Lily, built in 1881 towed in Seattle waters until 1889 when she was purchased and operated out of Stanwood by Capt. Charles Durgan until she was bought by the English logging Co. Originally a wood burner, she had a 17-foot beam, 90-foot hull and carried a crew of six.

A GOOSE OR SWAN PLATE A simple craft to create a beautiful swan with some plastic plates making the feathers groomed. It’s very easy to do. It is a recommend-ed craft for children about five years and older. MATERIALS: Two white plastic plates; Scissors and glue; Red and black colored markers; A pencil. STEP BY STEP: First : we will draw on one of the plastic plates with a pencil the outline of our swan. It has to be similar to an invert-ed “e”. To see how to do it, look at the image of how it has been for us. Second: we carefully trim the entire contour with scissors. Third : With a red marker we paint the beak and with a black one we make the eye. Fourth : with the other plastic plate we cut a few feathers and then glue them to the body of our beautiful swan. And it is finished.

LIVING ON MARS

Colonizing Mars has been the a topic of great romance and specula-tion. Mars does represent the most hospitable possibility in our solarsystem, but before packing your bags there are a few things you should probably know.

Although temperatures can reach comfortable ranges at the equatormidday, generally they are closer to Antarctica than Malibu. Because of the thin atmosphere nighttime lows are closer to -200f.

Speaking of the atmosphere, there isn’t enough to breath. There is also so little of it that radiation levels would quickly become lethal. Fierce dust storms are common and sometime engulf the entire plan-et. In addition, Mars soil contains high levels of toxins.

Food and water also quickly become concerns. Water does exist, but generally Mars is dryer than the driest desert of Earth. There are are no grocery stores..in fact there are no plants or animals and none that could be imported and survive.

In short, life on Mars would probably be in underground bunkers withmaybe some form of genetically modified algae for dinner and a per-petual lethal fear the life support would go out.

Feeling adventurous?

PATRICIA RESSEGUIE Despite a passionate dislike of home economics sewing classes, I returned to the thrum of a sewing machine in my middle age. It seemed the only way to create the line, color and texture I wanted to express my ideas about how life evolves in patterns of growth. I have listened a million times to the “kerchunk” of the needle drop, using up thousands of yards of sewing thread, building composi-tions stitch by stitch. Occasionally I change up the routine and use other materials, but the zen meditation of free motion embroidery keeps bringing me back to the sewing machine. This was not what I planned upon graduation with an M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago a smidge over the age of 50. I hoped to make profound statements in audacious ways. The verdant beauty of the Northwest settled me into a quieter life on Camano Island, Washing-ton. Each day I am grateful to be alive in this beautiful place to cre-ate art I hope will awake an emotional connection with those who see it. My formal training includes a M.F.A. (2002) and a Post-Bac-calaureate Certificate (2000) from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I have shown work in the United States, Europe and Japan, including work in exhibitions at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City, the Bellevue Arts Museum in Bellevue, WA, and the Museum for Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh.

JOSEPHINE CARING COMMUNITYIn the last edition of the Crab Cracker (Edition 266) we published an outdated and incorrect article about Josephine Sunset Home (now called “Josephine Caring Community”). Following is an up-to-date and accurate article...

Josephine Caring Community, serving Seniors since 1908. We are a service mission organization of the Evangelical Church of America. We are a nonprofit public benefit corporation. In 2011 Everett Her-ald did a study in Snohomish County and found Josephine to be one of the 30 best nonprofits. Largely due to the fact that 98% of our income goes directly back into programs.

Josephine’s Family of Brands offers 5 services/programs.

“The Meadows” - 129 beds for Long Term/Memory Care support. Jo-sephine is the 5th largest provider of Medicaid about 100 residents receive State funds to pay for their nursing care. Our current “Star” rating on Nursing Home Compare-CMS is 4 out of 5 Stars. We pro-vide more RN/LPN and nursing assistant hours per patient day than the national and state averages.

“Josie’s Learning Center” started in the 1980s. Josie’s offers in-ter-generational activities, with 200+ children registered in our Pre-school, ECEAP, Montessori, Kindergarten, and before & after school programs.

“The Suites” started in 1997- 55 apartments include, studio and 1- or 2-bedroom units, for independent and assisted living.

“Saratoga Transitional Rehab” started in the 2000s - 31 private rooms to get you back home, after a hospital stay. We admit and discharge about 400 patients a year from this program.

In March of 2019 Josephine received their licensing for “Josephine At Home”. We continue to grow and meet the needs of seniors in Skagit, Island, and Snohomish Counties.

Josephine is the second largest business in Stanwood/Camano, pro-viding jobs for over 300 valuable employees. Voted Best Retirement Community Stanwood/Camano for the last several years and for 2019. It is with “One Heart and Many Hands” that Josephine con-tinues to celebrate “Fullness of Life” with our community centered services.

DAN

Standing in line at the coffee shop on 8th I had a discussion about pickling Walrus meat with a very large bow-legged man named Dan. The room was alive in a discord of wrinkling paper, cellphone chatter, subtle typing, and conversations of varying pitch. Thinking about the Badarkis, sautéed Puffin breasts wrapped in marinated kelp, and boiled carrots and potatoes I was going to cook for dinner that evening, Dan mentioned he was going to the library to research calculations of avian defecation. Specifically, the propulsion patterns of Great Blue Herons. A young female barista behind the counter dropped an order on the floor, started crying, then ran into the back room. Stepping quickly up to the register the manager asked, “What would you like today sir?” Sliding a crisp, twenty-dollar bill across the granite counter I replied, “Nothing, just give the cash to the girl.” “Good luck with your feculent Dan!” I said while walking towards the door. Waddling on the welts of his tired brown leather shoes towards the counter he gave me a quick salute and a smile. His teeth looked like encrusted barnacles amidst black mussels entangled in byssal threads. I took two steps without looking and nearly stumbled over a little boy wearing coveralls and playing with toy cars on the floor. That’s when I saw her and all her wretched filth just standing in the doorway. Everyone heaved everything at her from every corner of the room. Coated in coffee, pastries, broken ceramic, and packets of fake sugar she just stood there completely unamused. The boy stood up between us with a toy car in each hand and asked, “Have you lo-cated them?” “Yes. “All three of them.” She replied. “Where are they?” he questioned sternly. “They’re inside Dan’s shorts.”

DRINKING AND DRIVING – DO EM ONE AT A TIME

When I first fell off the turnip truck down here on the South End, back about the first Civil War, not the one we got now, if you want-ed to wet your whistle, you needed to drive to Stanwoodopolis or beyond. The closest tavern was the Stanwood Hotel and that was 17 miles from my mailbox. There were three others on the east side of that metropolis, about as welcoming to newcomers as ICE is to immigrants. Course if you wanted to wet that whistle in a friendly establishment, you had to drive to La Conner and let me tell you the obvious, that drive home was Long and Fraught with peril. Drunk driving is no laughing matter, although back then it was considered a bit less socially destructive. Not that I would know from first-hand experience.

A few beers back, a few years I mean, the island got its first drinking establishment, the Shipwreck Bar and Grill, about 14 miles from my driveway. They served the bibulous and bubbling masses of the area for a few years, but it was kind of easy prey for the local deputies who would wait down the road for late night escapees trying to find their way home. The Shipwreck lived up to its name, all right, but some years later, one by one, new taverns sailed into the rocky reefs of Camano, served us denizens awhile, then went the way of the Ship-wreck. Today there are half a dozen establishments that serve beer and wine, some even pour hard drinks.

But none are close to my little abode in the woods. Until now. Or at least until soon. When the Tyee Megastore reopens in February as a tavern. And when it does, the South End will have essentially moved beyond the 20th Century’s legacy of Prohibition. Wives will weep and children will press quietly into aprons, church bells will peal, the AA meetings at the old blue Camano Center building will swell. I’m not going to suggest this is a New Renaissance. I won’t tell you it will change life as we know it down here for the better. Or even the worse. What I will tell you is that I can now walk through the woods on my trail to the old store, the tavern I mean, without fear of being pulled over on the drive home by vigilant deputies. And for that, I am eternally grateful. Paradise, like I always believed, is right around the corner. Or through the woods.

VOLUNTEERING AND FOSTERING AT CASACASA needs volunteers to help at the shelter.  Can you spare a few hours?  There are many ways you can help.  To keep the shelter bright and clean, morning cleaners are needed.  All dog kennels, cat areas and cages are cleaned; then each animal gets its food and water.  In addition to cleaning, help is needed washing dishes, folding clothes, etc.  Your time will help make the shelter a bright, cheery place for the animals awaiting adoption and for the people who visit. We are also looking for greeters to smile and welcome people to the shelter.  If you enjoy dogs, come walk a CASA dog. This provides import-ant mental stimulation for our dogs and great exercise for volun-teers.  You can walk dogs or spend quality time with them in the dog yard.  Experienced dog walkers/handlers are also needed for offsite events.  Must be 18 years or older to work with the dogs. If you prefer, you can spend time with cats at the shelter.  You can brush cats, play with and pet them, take notes on their personalities, and talk with potential adopters about the unique characteristics of each cat.  Reg-ular interaction with caring volunteers enhances our cats’ lives and their adoptability. Kitten season will be coming and CASA is looking for caring, loving individuals to foster young kittens. This opportunity directly saves lives.   It  is impossible for underage kittens to get the needed care at our shelter due to limited space and our limited staff hours. In order to help these kittens we need loving foster homes to care for them until they are old enough to come to the shelter to be adopted. Make a difference in the lives of these little kittens. Foster homes are also needed for elderly cats, cats recovering from medical procedures or recovering from illness, and occasionally dogs. These animals need one-on-one time with humans and a place to rest qui-etly for a short period of time. The shelter provides all necessities for the animals while in foster care. Call the shelter at 360-387-1902 for more information. www.camanoanimalshelter.org

SOUTH CAMANO GRANGE COMMUNITY P-PATCH GARDENWe are looking to host a large garden space where people can grow food, participate in the community and have fun getting dirty to-gether. SNOW GOOSE FACT:

Snow geese can live very long lives, which is why they can be difficult for hunters to fool

with decoys. The oldest snow goose on record,

according to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, was 27.5 years

SNOWBALL FIGHT IN THE YARD

A season exiled from society because they’ve committed a crimeOur chapped lips too stiff to say itBut, bad things happen in the winter time. The only possible escape, the numbing sensation of being frostbit. Trapped inside the house like jailThe locked window separates me from the kid with the sledWho got his tongue stuck on a pole like hammer and nail.Winter; A cool excuse to stay in bed.

CASA’S PET OF THE WEEK:FLOWER is a sweet girl looking to find her forever family. Flower can be a bit particular picking her fe-line friends and prefers them to respect her space. Since she has a strong personality we believe flower would be fine in a home with a dog. She does good with all people and loves to nap. Flower is still new to CASA, check back in for more information.

Jon, with his wife, Elaine, lives on

a small farm on Camano with their chickens

and ducks and a small handyman business.  Here he

shares what he sees in his various

fields of life.

MAÑANA

In the Spanish language, there is a charming word we all seem to know up here north of the border. “Mañana”. In classes across the country, students learn it means, “tomorrow”. In practice, however, it does not mean, “tomorrow”. It means, “just not today”.This makes great sense when one considers that tomorrow never comes. We never live in tomorrow, only today. If we’re not going to live there, why plan to do anything there? If it’s not going to happen today, then send it on somewhere into the future and don’t worry about it.

Our chickens have gotten the ducks confused about this. The ducks are eager to swim in blue water for a change and eagerly await a pause in the rain which would include sunshine so they can watch the water turn from grey to blue. It’s a duck thing it seems. But the chickens are up early for the weather report and tell the sleepy ducks, “Mañana”. So the ducks mark off another grey day on their calendar and head out. But when tomorrow becomes today, somehow the sun has fallen off the world again and the water stays grey.

This is an important issue for the ducks because they occasionally use their swimming pool for a bathroom. Not unusual. We know a lifeguard who has fished more than one brown trout out of a heavi-ly chlorinated public swimming pool. And you thought all they did was CPR. But for the ducks, when the sun shines, they know if the water is dirty enough to come get us to change the water. If it stays grey, go get the farmer. And they are thinking it’s about time, but they are not really sure.

The chickens are amused by this. We see it in the way they hang back for their cracked corn in the mornings while the ducks rush out to the pool and then to the yard to check the mud puddles. They talked this morning about having an egg laying contest with the ducks but decided to put it off until…mañana. It will be warmer then too.

CHOCOLATE COVERED STRAWBERRY CUPCAKES

CHOCOLATE CUPCAKES: 1 c. all-purpose flour ; 1/4 c. plus 2 T. un-sweetened cocoa powder; 3/4 tsp. baking powder; 1/2 tsp. baking soda; 1/2 tsp. salt; 1/2 c. light brown sugar, lightly packed; 1/2 c. granulated sugar; 1/3 c. canola or vegetable oil; 1/2 c buttermilk; 1 lg. egg; 1 tsp. vanilla extract; 1/2 c. boiling water; 1/2 tsp. instant espresso powder; 1 c. mini chocolate chips, optional; STRAWBERRY BUTTERCREAM FROSTING: 1 c. unsalted butter, room temperature; 3 c. confectioners’ sugar; 1 (1-oz.) bag freeze-dried strawberries; 2-3 T. heavy whipping cream; 1 tsp. vanilla extract; 1/8 tsp. salt; CHOCO-LATE COVERED STRAWBERRIES: 16 med. sized strawberries; 1c. semi-sweet chocolate chips; 1 tsp. coconut oil or vegetable shortening DIRECTIONS: CHOCOLATE CUPCAKES: 1. Preheat oven to 350 de-grees Line two 12-count muffin pans with 16 cupcake liners; set aside. 2. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk in the brown sugar and granulated sugar until well combined. Then whisk in the oil, butter-milk, egg, and vanilla extract and mix until just combined. 3. Add the instant espresso powder to the 1/2 cup boiling water and mix until fully dissolved. Add to the mixing bowl and mix until everything is just combined. The batter will be thin, this is okay. 4. Evenly distrib-ute the batter between all 16 cupcake liners, making sure to fill each one a little over halfway full. Bake for 16-18 minutes or until a tooth-pick inserted into the center of the cupcakes comes out clean. Re-move from the oven and carefully transfer cupcakes to a wire rack to cool completely. 5. STRAWBERRY BUTTERCREAM FROSTING: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk or paddle attachment beat the butter until smooth. Add the confectioners’ sugar one cup at a time, making sure to mix in each addition until fully combined. 6. Add the freeze-dried strawberries to a food processor and blend until powdery. Then, mix the freeze-dried strawberry powder into the frosting. 7. Add the heavy whipping cream, vanilla extract, and salt until fully combined, stopping to scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed. Add more whipping cream if the frosting is too stiff. 8. Fill a large pastry bag fitted with a 1M tip with frosting. Pipe cooled cupcakes with frosting. 9. CHOCOLATE COVERED STRAWBER-RIES: Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside. 10. Melt chocolate and coconut oil in a small microwave safe bowl on 50% power in 30 second increments, stirring between intervals, un-til melted and smooth. 11. Dip each strawberry into the chocolate one at a time and place on the prepared baking sheet. Transfer to the refrigerator until the chocolate has hardened. Top each cupcake with a chocolate covered strawberries.

YOUR MAJESTY, ARE YOU LOOKING FOR AREPLACEMENT FOR PRINCE HARRY? Dear Mrs. Queen, Your Royal Highness, Exultant Majesty, and Fellow Corgi Lover, Hi. I’m Tim Jones, your biggest fan. you probably know me from my world-famous humor column, View from the Bleachers. Not ringing a bell? No worries. My wife’s never heard of it either. Hey, I read on Twitter that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have decided to bail on the whole Royal Family thing. Apparently, Harry will forgo the titles of His Royal Highness, The Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel. That’s a lot of titles to forgo.

I understand your anxiety over this regal scandal. I suffer my own dis-grace every time I admit to being a common humor writer. But not to worry. I’ve come up with a win-win solution to both our problems. Just spit balling here, girlfriend, but how about you appoint me to replace Harry. Prince Tim. It has a nice ring to it, don’t you think? I hear ye – Not another American in the Royal Family! But I would be far less annoying than Meghan (let’s face it – she IS a bit of a “princess,” if you know what I mean). And my clothing allowance alone would save the British people millions.

I should mention that my last name is Jones – of common Welsh ori-gin. From what I hear, the English have always gotten along famously with the Welsh – almost as cordially as they’ve co-existed with the Scots and the Irish. One big happy family. Also, my wife is Canadian, so I’m pretty sure she qualifies for partial credit as a British subject.

The more I ponder it, the more it’s crystal clear I’m your perfect re-placement for Harry. At age 65, I’m almost the same level of maturity. I know how to drink tea, and I’m pretty sure I know the difference between a scone and a crumpet. I’ve visited London once and I am almost fluent in your foreign language. And, not to brag, but I can do a pretty spot-on drunk Harry Potter impersonation.

I am a little fuzzy on what my duties will be. Can you flesh this out for me? From what I read in People Magazine, it sounds like Harry’s role required him to represent the Royal Family at ceremonial occasions, like ribbon cuttings, charity fundraisers, chasing foxes on horseback and dressing inappropriately at late night costume parties. I can do all of these. I also read that Harry has often been a bit of an embar-rassment to his family. Me, too! Just ask my wife and kids.

I also have a question as to my official residence. Is Downton Abby available? If not, I am humbly open to your recommendations. How-ever, if you can swing it, I wouldn’t mind a castle with a moat and a drawbridge – to keep the Irish riffraff out. Nothing fancy. I’m a man of simple tastes.

By the way, can you explain what you call your country? Is it England or Great Britain or the United Kingdom or Camelot? Why can’t you all just pick one name and stick with it? I kinda’ need to know the name of my future kingdom, for when the time comes that I take your place. Which reminds me: When I become Prince, will there be a coronation for me? That would be awesome. All I ask is that at the reception, you not sit me next to the Earl of Norfolk or his wife, Lady Astor. They can be such intolerable bores, always talking about their prize-winning primroses.

I know we will get along famously – and besides, you won’t have to put up with that annoying Princess Meghan anymore. On a related topic, do you have any problem with my riding around in the royal carriage when my poker buddies from the states come to visit? I’ll make sure they don’t puke on the upholstery.

Did I mention I have a friend who owns a corgi? I love corgis. God Save the Queen, and with any luck, God Save Prince Tim, as well.
