The EVC newspaper is finally back and roll-ing strong after getting through a few obstacles. As a lot of you may not know Evergreen Valley College did have a newspaper about five years ago. The newspa-per was made through a journalism class, but after a lack of interest it went under. Every year thousands of stu-dents drop out or even forgo the initial attempt to register for classes due to financial uncer-tainty. They assume that there is no money and no potential way for them to receive assistance to afford school. But fear not—attaining that money is much easier than initially expected. I sat down with Gina Browne, Financial Aid Coordinator here on campus, to ask her about some of the mistakes that stu-dents make.

According to Browne, the single biggest mistake “is that they don’t apply.” That most students “think that they have to be super… poor in order to be eligible.” but that’s simply not true. More money is available to the average student so do not discount your chances. Apply as soon as you can. Another of the

common mistakes that Browne sites is that for students who do actually apply that they do not properly follow up with the application. Browne urges stu-dents that “if they don’t hear anything in a couple of weeks [to] come in” to the Financial Aid Office so that together the application can be filled.

There are also other means of receiving aid aside from student loans. Scholarships and grants are other viable ways for stu-dents to attain necessary funds.

Browne says that most students are eligible for the “fee waiver” [Board of Governors] and that most simply overlook scholar-ships because again they think that they do not qualify. All information for scholarships will be available online December 2010 through March of 2011. The best and earliest time to begin to apply for student loans is January 1, 2011. The last date to apply for the same fall school year is June 30th 2011; please refer to FAFSA.ED.GOV for all applicable dates.

Finally, Browne stresses that you apply for financial aid as early as possible to expedite the process. There are thousands of applications processed yearly, and the sooner you get yours in the better the chances you have of receiving your aid in time for the school year. Happy applying to all!

Two huge rivalries emerged for competition on Evergreen’s soccer field as De Anza and our EVC lady hawks battled once again. On the clear skies of a Tuesday afternoon on September 21 at EVC, players showed whose nest it was as the lady hawks devoured their opponents 2-0. It marked the first time in EVC history that Ladies soccer claimed a victory against rivalry De Anza

The Lady Hawks pressured De Anza’s goalie all game long until they scored their first goal in the second quarter. De Anza student Amy explained, “Both teams are very aggressive, like a ball being kicked on a wall.” Unfortunately for Amy, the EVC Soccer team punched through De Anza’s wall and devoured their goalie (De Anza’s goalie was rated number 1 in her district in high school last year). EVC student and fan Raquel says, “Evergreen is very good at hit-ting people on the neck, metaphori-cally speaking of course.” The team is led by a chemistry that protects their goalie and hovers the opposing goalie for majority of the game. The Lady Hawks’ defense protected their

goalie like a baby in its nest as De Anza could barely crack the third line of protection.

The Lady Hawks just started the year and will have home games for another two months, so DO NOT,

I repeat DO NOT MISS the oppor-tunity to rally for your soccer team in the up and coming home games. The team is a legitimate program and as we all know, we live in San Jose where soccer games are found daily in our local parks. Our soccer players seem like naturals.

As you all may or may not know every student pays a five dollar fee to AS and a

one dollar representation fee that our Associated Student team governs. Our goal this year is to make the most out of your dollars and spend them wisely for the greatest benefit to as much EVC students as possible.

This summer during our break, our team met and agreed on some goals

We’d like to accomplish by the end of the semester based on the issues numer-ous students had: Reduce cafeteria food prices, bridge the gap between Associated Student Government, students, and staff, have more activities on campus, bring back intramural sports, and bring back the school newspaper.

Our progress with our goals so far has

been outstanding. Our AS president andadvisor met with the cafeteria manager

as well as others to discuss the issue of prices and the food in the cafeteria. The outcome of the meeting was new man-agement, a value menu, and a greater variety of food, which accomplished our first goal.

Another goal accomplishment was bringing back the school newspaper. However, all the credit for this one goes to all the eager and persistent members of the new Newspaper Club. Even so, A.S. will get involved by setting up a meeting with the EVC president to bring back the newspaper(Journalism)? class and, hope-fully, get funded by AS permanently.

A goal AS very much wants to accom-plish is to get more students involved. AS

encourages students to join a club(s) and get the most out of your Evergreen Valley Community College experience. Furthermore, we urge you to attend AS meetings that are held every Thursday from 3-5 upstairs of the cafeteria in Gullo I to be aware of current issues and events (Room number). Students are welcome and encouraged to make appointments with any ASG member or just stop by the AS office with issues,

concerns, or comments at (Room num-ber???)

HOW TO BE A SUCCESS

Get To Know Your ASG

Gullo Talk

Its hard, not easy, but with your awesomeness: YOU CAN DO IT (Rob Snider in Adam Sanders movies). If you’re a student who already posses theses skills or a student who just spends a whole night crashing for a midterm or final, this article might still help you.

How do you succeed in your classes? This been the hot question that the newspaper club and I have been asking students all around campus. The newspaper club has figured, we should try to stop the repetitive ways that students crash hours of study the night before a final or midterm. We say NO, and demanded a better way of prepar-ing ourselves. So we did an intensive research study on what makes students successful. By interviewing students, and evaluating their responses for a month, we found out that students who had a G.P.A of a 3.65 and above gave approximately the same answers. What were the interesting outcomes? Students with high GPA’s excelled in the same areas, and students with low GPA’s complained about the same areas—and even sounded frustrated and teary-eyed. I will spill the beans in a second which areas where the top five. In essence, we gathered all of our data and came up with 5 strong area that, if followed, would practically guarantee any student higher grades in classes:

AREA 1: TIME MANAGEMENT My life changed when I read this book called The Recruit by Brian

L. Pauling. This CPA pointed out that when he hires people out of college, he never bases their intelligence on their G.P.A. Further, he stated that when he sees a 4.0 G.P.A, he knows that doesn’t necessar-ily indicate that the interviewee is smart; it just means that the inter-viewee knows how to manage time. Pauling states when he wants to know whether people manage time well or wastes time, he’ll look at their G.P.A. Moreover, Pauling believes that people willing to dis-cipline themselves to a rigid time schedule in college will earn a 4.0 G.P.A. I have a 3.0 G.P.A and I’m in my second to last semester. Next semester I will be taking only one class. However, I am taking 6 classes right now, working 17 hours a week at a retail store, and spending at least 8 hours a week as Chief Editor of this Newspaper. Okay, what do I do and recommend? I recommend spending at

least 4 hours a week for each class. However you do that. Whether you spend 1 hour a day for each class, or spend 2 hours every other day for each class, or even spend a colossal 4 hours on one day. Everybody’s different, so everybody’s madness is different as well, yet every student with a high G.P.A. agreed that they had to

spend tons of time outside the classroom in order to say current in their classes. I typi-cally spend 2 hrs every other day for my classes, and since I’m tak-ing 6 classes which means I try to spend at least 24 hours

a week doing homework. Sounds like a lot, yet when I break it down and divide 24/7, I roughly only study for 3 to 4 hours a day. HELLO I’m in college; SUCK IT UP! And yes my schedule is a bit too much, considering I work 17 hours a week and I’m Chief Editor. So how do I find all this time? I use a 5 x 8 blank index card and write out my open time slots for the week. Remember I am human so I don’t meet my own criteria all the time, especially since I like going out with girls and doing stuff that’s fun with my friends. But I make it mandatory to not slip under 20 hours a week. Most student take 4 classes which means the math would be 16 / 7, which comes out to a rough 2 to 3 hours of studying a day.

AREA 2: USE THE BOOK COMPANION WEBSITES.“Book companion websites are the best kept secret in college”

according to Alex Daryanani. And I wholeheartedly agree; that if your taking a class that has a assigned book, that isn’t made by the instructor, there’s a 90% chance your book has companion website. There you can get a glossary of all your keywords, get flashcards,

do crossword puzzles or games, and best of all, you can take specific tutorial quizzes on specific subject

AREA 3: DO YOUR BOOK REPORTS, ESSAYS, RESEARCH PROJECTS, SPEECHES 4 WEEKS BEFORE THERE DUE!

I never thought about getting my big projects done early, but I also don’t have a 3.65 and above YET! This gem was dropped by a former 4.0 student (last semester) that would always try to get the details out of his teachers about the big projects at the end of the semester.

AREA 4: VISIT YOUR TEACHERS DURING THERE OFFICE HOURS BEFORE A MIDTERM

Out of all 5 areas, this was the most controversial area. The issue that arose was that some students are not comfortable with their instructors on a one and one basis. So take a friend that’s in the class and visit the instructor together. BOOM! Problem solved!

AREA 5: HAVE A FEELING THAT YOU KNOW THAT YOU’RE GOING TO DO WELL ON YOUR TEST BEFORE TAKING IT.

Another new area for me to swallow was when I realized that if I do prep my mind and go into my tests with a overwhelming confidence, I earn a good grade. Area 5 really deals with one’s atti-tude and confidence. Many 3.65 students did claim that they’re not really smart; they just prepare a lot. We believe that along as you do AREA’s 1 through 4, you’ll be alright and have this high mind set. Yet, even if you didn’t do a lot of prep work, still try to have this positive mental attitude before going into a test. But please don’t try to do hocus pocus and weasel your way out of doing ideal prepping. Spend a few days of prepping yourself before taking any type of quiz, midterm, finale, or test.

So there you have it—5 guaranteed innovative ways of to raising your G.P.A. l by two grades. If you feel that this is unlikely, email me (Alfredo Knowles) at the [email protected] to make your claims.

Latino Heritage MonthEvery September 15th to

October 15th the Latino American community comes together in celebration. They celebrate in private as well as publicly with friends and family to commemo-rate the rich heritage that accom-panies the many struggles that each ethnic group had endured. While cherishing good fortune, the Latino American community also tries to educate and impart knowledge of it’s varied customs to the youth as well as to society at large.

Spanish Professor, Carmen Solórzano, is one of the peo-ple at Evergreen who work to make this happen. When asked

about what makes her passion-ate about Latino Heritage Month, Professor Solórzano states its for the ability to “celebrate success-ful moments no matter how small or large” (the small “ hearing a student improve his pronuncia-tion in Spanish”, the large, com-memorating “positive changes, like [that] of Cesar Chavez”). Along with these opportunities to celebrate accomplishments, she also reminds that there is the chance for students to be engaged at school. Professor Solórzano teaches a Salsa workshop that is collecting donations for a scholarship, The Enlace Student Association is featuring a series

of Latino themed movies every Thursday night from September 16th to October 7th, and there is also guest speaker Luis Valdez of Zoot Suit fame.

With all this to keep us engaged, the most important thing that we must all remember is that this is a celebration of unity and positiv-ity. Solorzano says ”taking a step back and saying, ‘yes’ there are challenges but look what we’ve done, look what I’m doing, look what my community’s doing to improve the lives of those around.” I think that’s an attitude we can all use to help weave a better society.
