NAIDOC We enjoyed a great day at school this week celebrating NAIDOC Day. The
program started with a smoking (cleansing) ceremony before a whole school
assembly led by Doug Wilson. At the assembly Joey Wilson gave the
welcome to country; Mr Glen Cook gave the keynote address; Joey Wilson
and Raeyah Kapeen spoke of the theme for this year’s NADOC Day; the
Evans Head Preschool students performed and our own Aboriginal Dance
Group performed. The dance also included a smoking for our cultural
walkway (led by Doug Wilson) and activities K-12 throughout the remainder of
the day. A NAIDOC cake was cut and consumed and kangaroo stew featured
at the canteen. It was a great day made possible by many students, staff,
community members and parents. Thank you to everyone who worked to
make the day so special. I would particularly like to acknowledge the work of
Mr Craig Gillespie and Ms Monique McLean in the leadership of preparations.
School ‘Kiss and Goodbye’ Zone In front of the school there is a ‘no parking zone’ put in place to enable
parents to drive in to the bay, pick up their children and move on. The police
have advised they will be monitoring use of the no parking zone, including
duration of time spent in the no parking zone.

Yr 5/6 Science & Engineering Challenge “The Science and Engineering Day was on Monday 24th June, 2019. There were many students to compete against and at the end of the day our school came 4th overall, which is an amazing achievement. Well done to the 32 students that came along to represent Evans River! A Big thank you to Mrs Fields and Ms Sherlock!” - Heidi McClure (Yr6)
“The Science and Engineering Day was amazing. We had lots of fun! We met a robot named Amy. We played games and increased our skills with abundant puzzles. We challenged ourselves against other schools and we did well, coming 4th overall. It was one of my best days ever!” - Charlotte Locke (Yr6)
“We went to the Southern Cross University for the Science and Engineering Day. It was a fun day for all. There were many activities for students in years 5 and 6 to participate in. A robot named Amy waved at us and even said "Hello". Fortunately we scored in the top 5 schools, unfortunately, we came in at number 4. But that's still a good effort for our Year 5 and 6 representatives. Good Job Evans River!” - Miah-Bella Norman (Yr6)
“During the Science and Engineering Day we got to do 2 different activities. My two activities were "Get Over It" and "Light Coms". My favourite was "Get Over It". We had to build a bridge out of cardboard, paddle pop sticks, straws, rulers and 4m of tape. The bridge had to hold weights. Ours made it to 5 weights before the bridge couldn't hold anymore. Light Coms was an activity where we had to communicate using light signals that we made up in our group. The best part of the day was at the end, when we saw a combustion experiment.” - Willy Harris (Yr6)
Boys Open Hockey On Thursday 27th June, Sue
Hunter and I had the pleasure of
taking our Open Boys Hockey team
to Ballina to play Ballina Coast High
School. Our boys played extremely
well beating a talented Ballina side
5-3.
Judd Piggott had an outstanding
game in goals deflecting numerous
attempts by Ballina. Marshall
captained the side, demonstrating outstanding leadership and hockey skills.
Donovan Moss played exceptionally well midfield, encouraging and
supporting our other boys.
Sue and I were extremely proud of the sportsmanship and commitment
demonstrated by the entire team. We are now into the next round and are
waiting to see where we play.

HSC Minimum Standards Tests Year 10 and some Year 11 students will be
participating in the new HSC Minimum Standards
Test during Term 3. To receive the Higher School

Students will have a number of opportunities
before leaving school to sit and pass the tests,
once a student has passed the test they will not
need to sit it again.
Students in Yr10 will be sitting the practice tests
on Tuesday 30th July and the actual tests on
Tuesday 6th August. Yr11 students that need to
sit the tests will do so from Wednesday 1st

School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATS) It is possible to include part time study of an
apprenticeship or traineeship during Years 11 and 12.
Normally if a student is undertaking an SBAT they attend the workplace one
day a week and on another day attend TAFE to complete the theory
component of their course.
Generally a Traineeship would be completed by the end of Year 12 while the
first year of the apprenticeship would be completed in the same time.
More information about School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships can
be found on our website by clicking here.

Please save your bread tags - they will be
recycled to fund wheelchairs in South Africa.
Made of high impact polystyrene they have a
good recycling value. Collecting bread tags, even
broken ones, makes a difference to our
environment too as they are recycled into
seedling trays, picture frames, coat hangers and
other items.
You and your family and friends can make a
difference to the lives of people in need of a
wheelchair in South Africa simply by saving all
your bread tags and dropping them off at Evans
Head Senior Citizen Hall. They are also collecting
ring pulls from drink cans.
