EVALUATION QUESTION 2: HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TEXTS? IN ORER TO CREATE A COHESIVE BRAND IMAGE, IT WAS NECESSARY TO CARRY OUT THE GENRE OF FILM NOIR ACROSS ALL THREE MEDIA PRODUCTS; THE TRAILER, THE POSTER, AND THE MAGAZINE COVER. THIS ALSO MEANT THAT WE HAD TO CREATE A UNIFIED MARKETTING IMAGE, IN ORDER FOR THE AUDIENCE TO LINK THESE THREE PRODUCTS TOGETHER. THE FIRST PRODUCT CREATED WAS THE FILM TRAILER ITSELF, IN WHICH THE GENRE OF FILM NOIR WAS PORTRAYED THROUGH THE THEMES OF ALCOHOLISM, ISOLATION AND ROMANTIC CONFLICT. THESE THEMES HAVE BEEN CARRID ACORSS INTO THE MAGAZINE COVER AND THE POSTER ALSO. THE POSTER SYMBOLISES THE KEY THEME OF ALCOHOLSIM AS THE PHOTO WAS TAKEN IN THE SAME BAR USED FOR THE FILMING OF THE TRAILER. THE COLOURS WERE IMPORTANT IN THIS PHOTO AS THE WARM GLOW OF ORANGE COMBINED WELL WITH THE DARK BROWN OF THE FURNITURE, RESULTING IN A DISTORTION OF MOOD AND EMOTION. ALTHOUGH THE SAME COLOURS WERENOT USED FOR THE EFFECT OF THE MAGAZINE COVER, A COHESIVE BRAND IMAGE HAS BEEN CREATED DUE TO THE MUCH COLDER, STARKER WHITES AND GREYS OF THE MAGAZINE. THE SATURATION OF THE IMAGES CHANGED BETWEEN THE POSTER IMAGE AND THE MAGAZINE COVER. ALTHOUGH THE TONES OF THE POSTER WERE A LOT WARMER THAN THE MAGAZINE COVER, THIS ENABLED US TO EXPRESS THE VARIETY OF THEMES WITHIN THE NARRATIVE. WHILST THE COLD TONES OF THE MAGAZINE PRESENT THE ROMANTIC COFLOICT BETWEEN THE CHARACTERS OF VERA ANDF JOHN, THE WARMER TONES WITHIN THE POSTER SYMBOLISE THE COMFORTING SENSE OF ALCOHOL AND THE FAMILIARITY OF THE BAR.

THE POSTER SYMBOLISES THE KEY THEME OF ALCOHOLSIM AS THE PHOTO WAS TAKEN IN THE SAME BAR USED FOR THE FILMING OF THE TRAILER. THE FONT USED IN THE POSTER ALSO HAS THE ‘SANS SERIF’ STYLE, WHICH IS INDICATIVE OF THE FONT USED IN THE TRAILER. THIS SANS SERIF STYLE CONNOTES THE MODERN APPROACH WE HAVE TAKEN TO THE GENRE OF FILM NOIR. THIS IS DUE TO THE SLIGHTLY COMICAL, RELAXED TONE OF THE FONT, AS IT DOES NOT HAVE A FORMAL, SERIF STYLE. NOT ONLY DOES THIS LACK OF

FORMALITY CONNOTE THE DISORDER OF THE PROTAGONIST’S MIND, BUT IT ALSO REPRESENTS THE CONTEMPORARY APPROACH WE HAVE TAKEN TO THE CLASSIC ‘FILM NOIR’. ALSO THE FONT USED IN THE TRAILER IS NOT THE SAME AS THAT SEEN IN THE POSTER, OR THE MAGAZINE COVER, THE SANS SERIF STYLE CONTINUES TO BE PRESENT IN THE TRAILER, AS WELL AS THE USE OF THE YELLOW COLOUR. THIS PARTICULAR COLOUR WAS CHOSEN

IN ORDER TO BRING A SENSE OF DRAMA AND DISTORTION TO THE TRAILER AND POSTER, AS THE SHADE WOULD NOT TYPICALLY BE SEEN IN A FILM NOIR TRAILER. THIS ONCE AGAIN CONNOTES THE MODERN APPROACH WE HAVE TAKEN TO OUR PROJECT.

THIS YELLOW COLOUR IS NOT SEEN ON THE MAGAZINE COVER, AS WE WANTED TO CONTINUE THE SOPHISTICATED STYLE OF THE ‘W’ MAGAZINE BRAND. SINE THEIR MAGAZINE COVERS ARE HIGHLY REPRESENTED BY MANY FEMALE CELEBRITIES, THE FORMAL SOPHISTICATION HAD TO BE PRESENT. THEREFORE WE CHOSE TO EXCLUDE THIS SHADE FROM THE COVER, AND INSTEAD USE THE COLOUR WHITE IN ORDER TO STGAND OUT FROM THE STYARK COLOURS OF THE BACKGROUND, AND THE DRAMATIC RED OF THE CLOTHING.

A FEATURE THAT IS PRESENT IN ALL THREE PRODUCTS, IS THE USE OF STARK, COLD, DARK COLOURS. THIS FEATURE CAN BE SEEN IN THE TRAILER AS WE CHOSE TO EDIT THE TRAILER INTO BLACK AND WHITE, IN ORDER TO FULLY ADHERE TO THE FILM NOIR GENRE. HOWEVER, MANY OF OUR SHOTS/SCENES, ARE FAIRLY LIGHT IN COLOUR, AND THEREFORE INCLUDE SLIGHTLY GREYER SHADES, RATHER THAN THE STEREOTYPICAL BLACK. THIS SYMBOLISES THE GENRE, WHILST STILL ALLUDING TO THE MODERN APPROACH TAKEN.

THE USE OF THESE STARK COLOURS IS PARTICULARLY PRESENT IN THE MAGAZINE COVER. THE CONTRAST OF THE WHITE AGAINST THE GREY IS SYMBOLIC OF THE MENTAL ILLNESS EXPERIENCED BY THE PROTAGONIST, AND THE ISOLATION THAT RESULTS FROM THIS. THE COLOUR WHITE WAS USED INSTEAD OF THE YELLOW SEEN IN THE TRAILER AND THE POSTER IN ORDER TO CONTINUE THE SOPHISTICATED IMAGE OF THE ‘W’ MAGAZINE BRAND. SINCED THIS MAGAZINE IS OFTEN REPRESENTED BY FAMOUS ACTRESSES AND CELEBRITIES, IT WAS IMPORTANT TO SYMBOLISE THIS HIGH STATUS IN OUR OWN VERSION OF THE MAGAZINE COVER. WE THEREFORE USED THE COLOUR GOLD AS IT CONNOTES A GLAMOROUS TONE TO THE COVER, JUXTAPOSING THE DARK SHADOWS OF THE POSTER AND THE TRAILER.

THE JUXTAPOSING COLOURS OF THE RED, WHITE AND GOLD REPRESENT THE DRAMATIC THEMES OF THE TRAILER, WHILST THE RED NOT ONLY SYMBOLISES THE ‘FEMME FATALE’ STEREOTYPE OF THE

FEMALE PROTAGONIST, BUT ALSO THE DANGEROUS MOTIVES OF THE MALE, CONTRASTED TO THE ROMANCE BETWEEN THESE TWO FORCES.

WE CHOSE TO USE THE COLOUR GOLD FOR THE 'W' SYMBOL, THE TAGLINE AND THE ACTRESS' NAME. THIS WAS IN ORDER TO PRESENT THE GLAMOUR OF THE BRAND, AS WELL AS MAKING THE LOGO STAND

OUT AGAINST THE DARK GREY. THE GOLD ENABLES A MUCH MORE FEMININE STYLE TO BE PORTRAYED, WHILST COMPLEMENTING THE BLONDE OF THE ACTRESS' HAIR. THE GOLD IS ALSO SIMILAR TO THE WARM TONES USED IN THE POSTER, AS WELL AS THE BACKGROUND USED FOR THE INDUSTRIAL INFORMATION OF THE TRAILER. THIS THEREFORE PROVIDES A COHESIVE LINK BETWEEN ALL THREE PRODUCTS.

THE USE OF THE GOLD LETTERING ON THE ACTRESS' NAME IMMEDIATLEY CATCHES THE EYE OF THE AUDIENCE, AND HEIGHTENS THE FEMALE BRANDING OF THE MAGAZINE COMPANY.

THE USE OF SHADOWING ON THE COVER OF THE MAGAZINE, INTEGRATES ALL THREE PRODUCTS, WHILST SYMBOLSING THE THEMES IN THE NARRATIVE. THIS RELATES TO THHE BLACK AND WHITE EFFECT OF THE TRAILER AND THE DARK SURROUNDINGS OF THE POSTER. THE ANCHORAGE TEXT OF ‘ “THE LAST DRINK” STAR MAKES HER DEBUT’ ALSO CONTINUES THIS STYLE AS THE GREY AGAINST THE RED IS SIMILAR TO THE JUXTAPOSITION BETWEEN THE YELLOW AND BLACK OF THE POSTER. THIS IS LASTLY REMINSCENT IN THE TRAILER, AS THE YELLOW AND BLACK CONTINUE TO CONTRAST HERE ALSO.
