Question 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My magazine is of the Indie/Rock/Alternative genre, and I was conscious of making sure the images and house style suited this. Here are some of the words that I would use to describe my representational image:

Indie looking clothes

Serious expression (serious about music)

Creative

Individual

Rebellious

Fun

Confident (i.e. the pose, looking directly at the camera)

Revolutionary

Talented

How does your media product represent particular social groups?I therefore asked my actors to wear clothes that suited this genre, in particular the main ‘artist’ that was to be used for my main cover and double page spread image. Here, Ameenah is wearing dark eye makeup that is typical of ‘rock dress sense’. She is displayed as confident, looking directly at the camera, and so the reader feels an instant connection. The clothes she is wearing fit the indie look of my magazine, also adding a hint of colour to my cover page. The words ‘I don’t owe anything to anyone.’ makes her seem rebellious and wild, appealing to youth that the magazine is aimed at. She is also the same age as those the magazine is aimed at (teenagers, 16-19).

GENDERI used both males and females in my images as to appeal to both genders. Although there are more images of females, the look of the magazine (house style, colour) shows that the magazine is aimed at both genders.

HOUSE STYLEThe colours used are quite dark, to represent the genre of rock. There are however hints of bright colours such as red or purple that is eye catching to the reader whilst still looking ‘alternative’. These are also colours that are generally seen to be ‘unisex’.

Purple ‘Q’ design feature on my double page spread

Content PageOverall sense of ‘darkness’, with splashes of red which connotes rebellion and passion. White also represents a calmness which contrasts against the dark and also brightens the page. These all represent the Indie genre.
