PRODUCTS?Evaluation by Jannatul Ahmed

This presentation will show you the ways in which my production "I Will Rise" uses media products to develop and challenge forms and conventions of real media products.

The ways in which I am going to address this question and present it to you is by firstly as the form of the production is of an "Opening Sequence" I will present the ways that "I Will Rise" fits the form of an opening sequence.

I will then continue on to describe the genre of "I Will Rise" and how we ensured that the opening suggests to the audience that this opening sequence belongs to the genre of a horror.

I will be using frame/ screen shots of parts of "I Will Rise" to support my analysis and to show; how the opening sets the narrative story, show Camera compositions, Editing, Sound and Mise En Scene .

As a convention of an opening sequences, many of which start with a establishing shot ours here does too. 

Another convention of opening sequences are Title sequences which have been used as seen in this shot of "I Will Rise Productions" 

The title sequence for this short film is very basic therefore leaving the audience puzzled unaware of anything that may or may not happen.

The use of credit sequence, such as the credit text of the director editor etc makes our short film fall into the category of an opening sequence.

WAYS THAT "I WILL RISE" FITS THE FORM OF AN OPENING

SEQUENCE• Whilst creating the story line for "I Will Rise" I thought of an imaginative way to title "I WiIl Rise" in a way that it is one creative, two

different from the rest and three fitting the horror genre.

• This led me with the idea of having the title written on a broken brick wall in dripping wet red blood, the initial idea was for it to be shot whilst raining in order to get the dripping effect of the blood, dripping down the wall falling in between the cracks, emerging the bloody letters on the wall resulting in a transition of letters to a blur. 

• This titling shot was according to me the director supposed to be a moving footage, and then  a freeze frame was supposed to be inserted to propose that this is the title, this would have created a much creepier effect however although my original proposition did not get delivered the way I wanted due to the fact that we were going over the limited time we had to fit the final sequence to. I wasn't far too dissappointed as we had a little of the dripping effect from the water we used to mix in with  the blood and paint resulting in a different approach to creating the ambiance for the audience to feel on edge.

• The strength of  the writing on the wall, was the way I wrote it by this I mean the "font" The approach I went for was to create a very jagged style of the writing to aid in enhancing the effects to create the genre of horror to a further extent.

GENRE 

• The way "I Will Rise" can be recognised immediately as a Horror genre, is firstly through the stereotypical use of an isolated setting to suggest vulnerability.This is shown from the train station platforms which are bang on in the middle of nowhere. You either get inside the train on the start of a journey, or you stay outside keeping aware of the horrible things that can happen, this creates a fearful ambiance to the scene.

• Another way is through the element of darkness yet another famous convention of the horror genre which connotes mystery and uncertainty for the audience.

• Extraordinary events happening in an ordinary situation for instance a clown in a train platform.

CAMERA WORK AND EDITING• In order to make our production similar to that of a horror genre  we had to

ensure that the camera work was effective enough as from research I had  found that horrors show a convention of very effective camera movement and composition . We tried to use  a variety of shots, and I feel we were successful in doing so. The different types of camera used in our production is shown in a vague table in Evaluation seven.

• The editing in our opening sequence fastens from the beginning till end signifying a sense of urgency for the audience. It gets progressively faster in order to emphasize the tension that is being built as the protagonist attempts surviving. The concept of pursuit itself is a popular theme in the horror genre. The list of edits we used are yet again listed in a table in Evaluation seven.

 HOW THE CHARACTERS ARE INTRODUCED

To introduce our main character, we have a over the shoulder shot from the antagonist ( Clown - me) shoulders of where the protagonist (Nethearsha) is hurriedly looking around waiting for the train to arrive.

We then have a shot reverse shot of  the protagonist looking at the antagonist. The antagonist (Clown - me) is wearing dark clothing which suggests to the audience that she is the antagonist in the film.The only possible colour noticeable is the white painted face and red smile connoting evil.

As quickly as the antagonist clown appears in that exact amount of time she also disappears. leaving the audience left puzzled. 

 SPECIAL EFFECTS• These shots illustrate the use of special effects we

created in our opening sequence. In this frame the protagonist is about to react to the disappearance of the Clown ..
