How effective is the combination of your main product (film trailer) and ancillary texts (poster and magazine cover)?

Promotion I created my ancillary task in order to help promote my film

trailer. Film posters are everywhere; on billboards, on buses, on and in magazines, outside cinemas.

Often people don’t always notice them however by them being seen repeatedly, promotes the film as the viewers may recognise the characters, remembering the poster, becoming more intrigued by the trailer. Film magazine covers have to be eye catching to draw the attention of potential viewers of the film in, making them want to buy that particular magazines over other competitors. The covers have vital information on it; the price, what is in the magazine, the title and the issue.

Combination

To combine my trailer and ancillary tasks I used a subtle reference to the flower ‘forget me not’, using a small image of them: by the title of the film on the magazine cover and at the bottom right of the poster. I also used a pale blue, linking again to the flower as well as all connoting sadness.

I also always used an image of the main protagonist on my ancillary tasks, making it easy for audiences to make the quick connection between magazine cover, film poster and trailer.

FeedbackGaining feedback from an target audience was really good in

order to see what I could improve if I did it again. My audience feedback said that they thought my ancillary tasks

and trailer fit well together and looked very professional. They especially liked the poster, saying that it made them want to watch the film, without even having seen the trailer. They liked the images used on both ancillary tasks, however some said there could have been a background image used as well as saying they were unsure of the font used on the magazine cover. I personally like the simplicity of the ancillary tasks, not over crowding them with images but I do agree that the font of the magazine could have been more eye catching.

Film PosterI wanted my poster to look

different and eye-catching, which is what I thought about the film poster of Train Spotting, which is what I use for my inspiration for my poster. However I used three images of the same character overlaid in order to show her confusion and jumbled up thoughts, reflected in the images.

Magazine CoverI chose to base my film magazine on other

independent film magazines as I felt it fit the tone of my film. I wanted my cover to fit the conventions of a typical cover, while still looking unique and different, standing out from the rest.

My main inspiration was Sight & Sound, using that to spark my own ideas. I loved the use of a variety of font types dotted around the person. I also used the Reeling: The Oscar Issue featuring Leonardo as inspiration as I loved the simplicity of it.

Conclusion

Overall, I that that I combined my trailer and ancillary tasks really effectively and that they work very well all together.

Both ancillary tasks have similar colour schemes featuring the main protagonist either in character (poster) or the actress as herself (magazine cover). On the poster the billing is very professional looking as well as the text on the magazine cover.

My ancillary tasks don’t give too much of the plot away, causing a sense of mystery. Both ancillary tasks use the correct codes and conventions keeping them professional.
