EvaluationIn the making of my groups short film we learned a lot about the planning of a short film and came across many problems as well as solutions which my group was quick to solve. I have learnt how important pre-production is when it comes to making a short film as it helps to keep everything organised and ensures that all deadlines are met. I found that within pre-production that the schedules and deadlines were just as important as things such as the shot list, storyboard Recce and script as it made sure deadlines were hit which is important in the media industry. Our group had many strengths and weakness’ when it came to our pre-production. One thing in which we used in order to organise time was a shooting schedule. This was a schedule which detailed when we were to meet up in order to film. This schedule had to be organised and everything had to be done with time in advance encase the shooting did not go to plan. This happened on our first shoot. We all organised when to meet up but our camera wasn’t working so we were set back a lot. When we finally got a new camera it was too dark and therefore our footage didn’t come our right. Luckily, we had made the schedule with extra time just in case and therefore we had time to go back and film again. This demonstrated the importance of having a good shooting schedule. Therefore, I feel that my shooting schedule was initially detailed and realistic enough to allow us you achieve good quality and compete the recording of all footage.Along with the schedule, call sheets had to be given out in order to let everyone in the production where to meet and at what time which would help to get the production done on time without wasting time. This went well as all of the call sheets were given out with plenty of time and therefore anyone who could not make that day could tell us and then we could deal with it by changing the date. They worked effectively as everyone showed up on time and therefore no time was wasted on people that didn’t show up on selected days.Another part of the planning which had high importance was the storyboard and the shot list. The shot list had to be organised correctly in order of how we would set up the shots in order to make the most of the time needed. This shot list was very useful and tended to be organised well to make the most of set up where needed. The storyboard needed to be detailed and substantial enough to cover the one-minute film without passing the one-minute line by a lot. When filming we found that all of the footage fit into the story board and there was more than enough footage. The only problem with the storyboard was the fact that duration and sound was left out. This meant that when filming we would not know how long to film meaning that we could not be sure if the film would fit. Similarly, when it came to editing adding the sound would be difficult if it was not recorded. Any natural sounds which could be captured during the filming would also be left out therefore making the production less professional. Both the story board and the shot list helped to organise and make the most of the time that we had for filming therefore saving time which would lead to saving money and hitting important deadlines.

When planning another important part was choosing the right location and ensuring that there was a backup location encase things didn’t go to plan. Fortunately, the second location did not need to be used as our location was recce’d correctly. This included the evaluation of the background noise, lighting and permission. All of these things were cleared accurately meaning that we had a good location that fit all of the criteria. Things like getting permission was very important because while filming we was asking why we was there and if we had proof which meant that we could supply this proof and therefore were not kicked off of the location and therefore left unable to finish the film. This would expand time and mean that we couldn’t hit our deadline as money and time would both be lost.Actors was another thing that needed to be chosen in advance before any of the filming went on. These actors had to be convincing as it is a very important aspect of the film. They also had to be punctual as we would not want to have lost time waiting on actors to show up to the production. The actors in which we used put on a good performance and were prepared in advance for filming. Both of them were very punctual as they showed up to all of the shoots on time. This saved time and ensured that the production was done on time. The only thing about the actors which could be done better was the fact that as they were not professional actors they had to be directed a lot more than your average actor which wasted time in the filming process. Therefore, I believe that we made the right choice when picking the actors for our production although actors with experience could be chosen next time. Similarly, we had to make similar choices when assigning the crew and particular jobs. All of these jobs were fulfilled and everyone took their part aswell as helping others when needed. Everyone in the production team was punctual which helped to get the production finished on time. In the preproduction process they also completed all of their assignments to the fullest which meant that when it came to filming everything was planned and this made the whole filming process run a lot smoother. Therefore, I have come to the conclusion that all of the roles were assigned accordingly. One thing that went wrong during our filming process was the preparation of the equipment. The equipment should have been checked, charged and working properly before leaving on a filming day. On one of the days, however, we went out to film and the SD card was not working properly. Although, we got a new SD card a few hours later, it was too dark to film and therefore a whole filming day was wasted. Fortunately, we planned extra filming time just encase and therefore we had plenty of time to finish the production. Some things with in our production didn’t go to well. For example, duration and time were missed out as well as checks on the equipment before filming days, prolonging the shooting process. The actors were also not professions and therefore the acting lacked realism in our production. These things were all things which could have been fixed before going out on recording days and if I were to make another film, these things would be the types of things I would have changed in the production process However, I think that overall our management of the production process went quiet well as everything was done on time due to planning like a schedule and

call sheets which helped to ensure that people knew what was happening. Also things such as the storyboard and shot list helped to make the recording process quicker as everyone would know what needed to be done and when with the least set ups. Things such as the Recce ensured that all of the location were ideal and therefore time would not be wasted relocating and permission was found for these locations for the same reasons. All of these things ensured that everything ran smoothly and therefore no deadlines were missed despite things going wrong. For example, when we forgot to check the camera and it got too dark to shoot, we ensured to give ourselves plenty of time so we could pick another day to film.
