The ASB course evaluation is an important tool in the development of courses, pro-grammes, the study environment, staff development etc.

The course evaluation takes place continually each spring and each autumn semester by handing out questionnaires during class.

A key objective of the course evaluation is to secure a systematic evaluation of the individual courses – but also to secure a more systematic evaluation of programmes at least every second year. A key evaluation principle is fewer evalua-tions of a course, but deeper evaluations when they take place.

How are courses selected for evaluation?

Each semester, the Directors of Study/ Study Committees and Heads of Depart-ment select a number of courses for evalu-ation in collaboration with the Vice Dean, Director of Education. That means that not all courses are evaluated each semester.

The main evaluation principles are:

1. Newcoursesareevaluatedthefirstand second time they run

2.Newteachersareevaluatedthefirstand second time the teach a course

3. Courses are selected for evaluation every second or third time they run

4. Teachers teach a class for a minimum of 4 lessons before evaluation

5. Small classes (10-12 students) may alter- natively be evaluated by the teacher with a qualitative mini evaluation with no other processing than the teacher’s (learn more later in this brochure)

6. The Vice Dean, Director of Education, Directors of Study, Heads of Depart- ment and teachers can always request an evaluation in addition to the principles 1-4. For example for accreditation pur- poses, in connection with teaching issues, course or career development etc.

Why manual questionnaires?

Previously, the course evaluation took place via web based surveys with the students receiving a link to the questionnaire to be answered in their spare time. Unfortu-nately, the response rates were very low and did not form a satisfactory basis for assessing and making changes in courses and programmes. Therefore it was decided to implement manual questionnaires to be filledinduringclass.Thishasresultedinamajor improvement of the response rates from 25 percent to approx. 60 percent.

Pursuing the ASB strategy ‘IT in every-thing’, a new web based solution is being prepared, which ensures the students’ wireless network access at ASB in order to answer the online questionnaire on their laptops during class.

The evaluation process

Evaluation of the selected courses are ordered at the departments via an online application

The questionnaires are printed for the selected courses/classes

The questionnaires are handed out to the teacher who distributes them to the class in the following lesson

Thequestionnairesarefilledinbythestudents the last 10 minutes of the lesson

A student representative is asked to col-lect and deliver the questionnaires to a special box in front of ASB Information

The questionnaires are scanned and result reports are made for the class, the teacher, the Head of Department, the Director of Study and the Vice Dean, Director of Education. See more about results and follow up procedures later in this brochure.

More info about the questionnaire

The questionnaire is dealing with six areas with importance to learning:

Students’ prerequisitesSettings and conditions regarding the teachingAimsContentsLearning processLearning outcome

The evaluation is mainly a quantitative survey, but it is also possible for the students to make free comments.

With regard to questions about the teacher, the students are asked to evaluate the teacher of the day. In the end of the questionnaire they can comment on other teachers of the course

Mini evaluation of courses not centrally selected for evaluation

Teachers with courses not selected for evaluation can choose to make their own qualitative evaluation of the course.

A small questionnaire for copying can be downloaded from www.asb.dk/courseeval/teachers.

Please note that this kind of evaluation is not part of the ASB evaluation, and results will not be generated on the basis of these questionnaires.

The evaluation results are sent to the teacher ASAP. Teachers are obliged to discuss the evaluation results with the class in question – if possible before ending the course.

The students get access to the class result via CampusNet. Please note that the speci-ficteacherevaluationandfreecommentsare not part of these results.

The Heads of Department, The Directors of Study and the Vice Dean, Director of Education receive the evaluation results of their respective areas in the end of each semester.

A summary of all evaluations will be published on www.asb.dk/courseeval/results in the end of each semester.

Follow up procedures

At the departments, follow up on course evaluations is made by the Head of Depart-ment at the annual staff development appraisal meetings with the permanent staff and the follow up by the course responsible on good or bad evaluations of courses or classes.

The Directors of Study/Study Committees assess the course evaluations, and in case of unacceptable evaluations they contact the relevant Head of Department, course responsible or teacher.

The Vice Dean, Director of Education makes an overall assessment of the evalua-tion results. In special cases he will contact the departments or study committees in ordertofindasolutionandmaybegrantsome extra resources for course develop-ment, pedagogical activities etc.
