The Church
Christianity is one of the legacies of the Roman Empire.
Christians were followers of Jesus. Anyone who believed and followed his ways was a Christian. There was one type of Christian church.
Early Christians were persecuted and Christianity was illegal.
In 313 Constantine made Christianity legal and by 395 it was the official religion of the Roman Empire.
The Great Schism (or break) happened after the Eastern Empire (Byzantine) and the Western Empire (Roman) broke apart. Everyone in the East became Orthodox and everyone in the West became Roman Catholic.
The Church was the center of medieval life in western Europe.
