Last year we launched our innovative Winter Wonderland programme.

Departing in late January, the tours perfectly suit people who cannot get away

at Christmas but still want to experience the magic of the European Winter

Wonderland. Following that success, this year we are launching two incredible

new tours. One, An Alpine Christmas Adventure, assembles all the best sights

and highlights into one ultimate tour. The other, Spain, Portugal & the

Three Kings Festival focuses on Spains iconic Christmas street parade and

Three Kings celebration. Since this occurs in early January, you could even enjoy

enjoy New Year followed by a second Spanish Christmas! What fun!

George Bernard Shaw once said, I dislike feeling at home when I am abroad. Mr Shaw was so right and that is why we purposefully avoid those large, impersonal, chain hotels cloned around the world. A Bucket List Christmas HolidayI have wanted to celebrate a Christmas in Europe with my family for many years. I longed for somewhere that screamed tradition, that yuletide picture on the cookie tin, instead of the usual Christmas in Queensland of prawns, heat and sand. I wanted our family to experience quaint little restaurants with log fires and traditional Christmas food, to play in the snow and to soak up the nostalgic festive spirit.

Travelling with Albatross on a Christmas tour was by far our most memorable holiday. From snow tobogganing to shopping and eating our way through the magical Christmas markets and wandering the misty streets of Salzburg, it truly was a bucket list wish come true. Although my most treasured memory was playing with my family and new found tour group friends in over a metre of fresh snow on top of the Stubai Glacier in Austria. Tears fell from my eyes and from that moment I was in my Christmas Wonderland.

DAY 5 The mighty Zugspitze Driving to nearby Garmisch-Partenkirchen we board a funicular train which takes us across snow laden fields to the base of the mighty Zugspitze. At this point the train enters the mountain and tunnels its way up to Zugspitzeplatt station at an altitude of 2,600 metres. Here you can be entertained by the alpine hustle and bustle and marvel at the acrobatic stunts of the free skiers and snowboarders in Terrain Park Zugspitze. There is also a marvellous SonnAlpin Glacier Restaurant to enjoy a relaxing brunch.

Later we will catch the cable car to the summit of the Zugspitze mountain, Germanys highest peak. At an altitude of nearly 3,000 metres the views are quite stupendous. Take in the unmatched 360 panorama with a view of more than 400 peaks in Austria, Italy, Switzerland and Germany, or enjoy lunch in the Gipfelalm rustic summit lodge. We then catch the Eibsee cable car all the way down to the lakeside where our coach meets us and takes us back to our hotel.Meals: B,D

DAY 6 Linderhof Palace, Kloster Ettal, Oberammergaus Passion Play theatre and My Time This morning we visit nearby Linderhof for a guided tour of the extravagant French Rococo Palace yet another of King Ludwigs amazing creations. Later we stop at Kloster Ettal. This monastery in a lovely shaded valley dates back over 700 years and is one of the finest examples of Rococo architecture in existence. Following a guided visit to the Passion Play Theatre, the rest of your afternoon is free in Oberammergau to wander through the streets of beautifully painted houses and chalets.Meals: B

DAY 7 My Time in Innsbruck and to SalzburgDeparting Bavaria we cross the Garmisch Pass and descend into the spectacular Inn Valley and reach the winter resort of Innsbruck before lunchtime. You have plenty of time to explore the delightful Old Town and see the famous Golden Roof. The Christmas markets are beautifully located in the old city central square. Later we continue to Salzburg the baroque city of Mozart sitting beneath its enormous Festung (Fortress) where we spend two nights.Meals: B,D

DAY 3 Bamberg and Nrnberg Christmas Markets We have included a full day excursion. First stop is the nearby UNESCO World Heritage listed city of Bamberg, which boasts hundreds of buildings, mansions and palaces displaying the various stages of architecture dating back 1,000 years. Famous for its unique smoked beer and antique shops Bamberg is one of Germanys best kept secrets. In the afternoon we continue to the massive stone towers and gates of medieval Nrnberg. Once the setting for enormous Nazi rallies and the War Crimes trials, Nrnberg now boasts extensive pedestrian walkways and the most splendid Christmas Markets in Europe. This huge market has a unique law that only traditional Christmas artifacts are allowed for sale. As dusk approaches, the music and singing, Christmas lights and smell of mulled wine, roasting sausages, chestnuts and sweets fill the air.Fantastic! We return to Rothenburg early evening. Meals: B

DAY 4 Romantic Road to Fussen, Neuschwanstein Castle and Oberammergau Travelling south we reach Bavaria late morning and spend lunchtime at the end of the Romantic Road in the town of Fssen. Take time to walk through the very picturesque and historic town. Our afternoon visit is to the nearby village of Hohenschwangau. After a brisk walk uphill you will enjoy a visit to one of the most inspiring and famous castles in the world Mad King Ludwigs romantic Neuschwanstein Castle. At the Castle you will enjoy a guided tour inside the Kings apartments, staterooms, halls and throne room all reminiscent of a Wagner operatic saga. Later we continue to the historic village of Oberammergau famed for its Passion Play performances which have been staged every 10 years since the 1600s. Oberammergau is set in the picturesque Ammer Valley beneath snow capped mountains. The town itself is also famous for its beautifully painted houses and chalets.Meals: B,D

Magical Marketsby Julia HigginbothamTravelling on the German and Austrian Christmas Markets tour transported me to another world. While wandering down the cobblestoned streets of an old town square, I was surrounded by impressive architecture, the beautiful voices of carol singers, the smell of German fare cooking and twinkling lights. There were vibrant wooden stalls filled with decorations, food, drinks and keepsakes enticing locals and tourists alike.

Being able to experience this amazing European tradition and bask in the culture was unforgettable. However, there was more to the tour than just shopping at Christmas Markets! I fell in love with quaint villages, learnt the history of many towns and cities and saw some beautiful scenery.

The highlights of this tour for me were the city of Salzburg, travelling to the Zugspitze summit for a day in the snow and most of all experiencing the culture firsthand at such a festive time of year. The authentic and cosy accommodation, wonderful Tour Manager and Driver plus a great itinerary made my holiday unforgettable. Thank you Albatross Tours!

DAY 8 Salzburg sightseeing and My Time This morning we enjoy a walking tour with a local guide who will introduce you to this enchanting city, including several locations used in the film The Sound of Music. DAY 4 ~ 11 DECEMBER Hospices de Beaune and to Lyon Travelling south we reach Beaune, capital of the Burgundy wine region. On arrival, enjoy lunchtime at leisure amongst the quaint medieval streets and squares. We have included a visit to the fascinating Hospices de Beaune (audio guide included). Covered with multi-coloured, glazed roof tiles the Hotel Dieu was built over 550 years ago to help the towns folk in a time of poverty and famine. DAY 5 ~ 12 DECEMBER Lyon sightseeing, My Time and Christmas MarketsA wonderful day in Lyon! This morning we explore the historic Roman area to visit the ancient amphitheatre and Musee Gallo, and to see the hilltop Basilica of Fourvire which dominates the whole town. The views from its terrace are splendid. Your afternoon and evening are at leisure. Perhaps stroll through the cobblestoned streets of Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon), stop at a riverside caf for white wine and oysters, or shop along the pedestrianised shopping mall from Place de la Republique to Place des Terreaux. The Christmas markets on Place Carnot are excellent, and at night the hilltop Basilica is beautifully illuminated. DAY 6 ~ 13 DECEMBER Annecy, Christmas Markets and Megve in the French Alps After a leisurely start we enter the Haute Savoie region to enjoy lunchtime exploring the pretty lakeside town Annecy. Here, cobblestoned streets, half-timbered and beautifully painted houses sit beside picturesque canals which are criss-crossed with stone bridges. With its Chteau dAnnecy, once castle home to the Counts of Geneva, and a back drop of mountains and the turquoise lake, the Vieille Ville (Old Town) is incredibly pretty and the Christmas Markets add to the picture. Later this afternoon we drive deep into the heart of the mighty French Alps to the chic ski resort of Megve. Surrounded by a dozen world class ski resorts, and the enormous mountains of the Mont Blanc massif, Megves chalets and ancient rustic buildings date back as far as the 1300s. At night time the horse and carriages sitting in the pretty town square in front of the illuminated church and enormous Christmas tree, decorated with Swarovski crystals, create one of the most gorgeous festive settings you will ever see. DAY 7 ~ 14 DECEMBER Chamonix, the historic Red Train and My Time Today we visit the world famous resort of Chamonix. Here we board the historic Red Train which winds its way up through the forests and valleys to Montenvers station. DAY 8 ~ 15 DECEMBER Ice Curling and My Time in MegeveTo start the day we have included a game of Ice Curling. A local instructor will teach us the rules and then a game Watching will be as amusing as playing! The highlight of today will be a ride on a horse drawn carriage ride through the delightful old town and local countryside. The rest of the day is completely at leisure. Maybe take a winter walk! A famous walk called the Calvary of Megve starts from near the ice skating rink. There are a series of 14 chapels along the way representing the Passion of Christ the Way of the Cross. Whereas Megve is located in a valley, this superb ultra-chic, modern ski resort is set at 1850 metres altitude. Part of Les Trois Valles, the largest linked ski area in the world, Courchevel 1850 is a massive ski complex with 8 lifts and gondolas running directly in and out of the central ski station, surrounded by dozens of shops, bars and restaurants of all kinds, tastes and styles, with a constant bustle of colourful sport enthusiasts and elegant sightseers. The surrounding scenery is breathtaking and the wood cabin villages so picturesque. PRE-CHRISTMAS TOUR Bohemian Christmas Markets | 12 days | Berlin to Munich

DAY 5 Dresden sightseeing, My Time and Christmas MarketsRebuilt after the massive bombing raids of WWII, Dresden has once again bloomed into one of the most beautiful and elegant cities in Europe, reflecting the grandeur of this capital of the Electors of Saxony, who once ruled a powerful empire. On our morning walking tour you will see the glorious Zwinger Palace courtyard, the Semper Opera House, and symbolic Frauenkirche dominating the massive market square filled with Christmas Market stalls. After following the Frstenzug a dramatic, 100 metre long painted porcelain mural depicting the procession of Princes, we visit the Dresden Royal Palace. We have included entrance to the museums including the Armoury, Turkish Chamber, Riesensaal (Giants Hall) and the fabulous New Green Vault with over 1,000 beautiful and often priceless gold and silver bejewelled objects. Simply stunning! The rest of your day is at leisure. Make sure you take time to wander along Brhls Terrace by the river, which is nicknamed the balcony of Europe. Dresden boasts the oldest and most traditional Christmas Markets in all of Europe. The Striezelmarkt on Altmarkt square is massive. Dating back to the 15th century it is named after the word Striezel otherwise known as traditional Stollen cake.Meals: B

DAY 6 Saxon Switzerland National Park sightseeing and dinner in a Saxon restaurantThere is nothing quite like a day in the country. We have included a wonderful excursion into Saxon Switzerland, a pristine National Park near the Czech border. First stop will be at the amazing Bastei Bridge, which links a series of rocky towers, spanning gorges and cliffs. From the various lookouts the views down onto the River Elbe are stupendous. Later we also visit the Knigstein Kings Stone hilltop fortress. Started nearly 800 years ago, it evolved over the ages into an impregnable stronghold perched above sheer cliffs. Make sure you walk along the towering ramparts and visit the arched, old wine cellars and the three metre wide, 152 metre deep well which is hand carved from solid rock. Later we return to Dresden for some time at leisure to explore the Christmas markets, before enjoying dinner in a local Saxon restaurant. Meals: B,D

DAY 3 Potsdam Palace and Gardens This morning we enjoy an excursion to nearby Potsdam. On arrival we enjoy a guided visit to Cecilienhof Palace. This was the last palace built by the German Kaisers, and is most famous for being the site of the Potsdam Convention where Churchill, Truman and Stalin met in 1945. Inside is a fascinating museum and the furniture, private reception rooms and huge conference table, remain exactly as they were when these great leaders met to carve up a ravaged, post war world. Afterwards, accompanied by our local guide, we will enjoy a panoramic tour including a stop on the terraces of Fredrick the Greats Sanssouci Summer Palace , before enjoying lunchtime in Potsdams pretty Dutch Quarter.

On our way back to Berlin this afternoon we stop to take a walk on the Bridge of Unity more famously known as the Bridge of Spies. Back in Berlin, you are free to enjoy the wonderful sights and museums. Maybe visit the nostalgic Christmas Market at Schlossplatz on the Museuminsel? This evening we have included dinner in a local restaurant.Meals: B,D

DAY 4 Leipzig sightseeing and Christmas Markets Heading south we soon reach the cultural city of Leipzig, with its 16th century renaissance style buildings, and once home to Bach, Wagner and Schumann. After an orientation tour we enjoy lunchtime in the market square in front of the old City Hall. Here you will find one of Europes oldest and largest Christmas Markets with over 250 stalls! Later we continue to wonderful Dresden where we stay the next three nights.Meals: B,D

Bohemian Rhapsody by Euan Landsborough, The MoThey say there are over 60 Christmas Markets in Berlin alone. To me the one with the most striking location is the Gendarmenmarkt. The market is actually called the WeihnachtsZauber Christmas Market and features more upmarket handmade goods and tantalising gourmet foods.

Aside from Christmas Markets, it is the city of Dresden which just blows me away. I adore this city which was devastated in the war and has since been lovingly re-built. Palaces, grand houses and towers replicated just as they once were. Christmas Markets large and small are scattered around the old town. Be sure to venture to Altmarkt Square where youll find Germanys largest and oldest Christmas Market, the Striezelmarkt. Tradition runs strong here as this event dates back to the 15th century. Thats well over 500 years! This is where the Christmas Stollen cake originated.

We visit St Vitus cathedral and the Zlat Ulika (the Golden Lane) with its tiny colourful houses built right into the arches of the Castle walls and named after the goldsmiths who lived here in the 17th century. DAY 10 Nrnberg sightseeing, My Time and Christmas MarketsThis morning we are joined by a local guide to show us around the town and visit the Nazi Documentation Centre and Rally Grounds. With its massive stone towers and gates, medieval Nrnberg has a rich history stretching back hundreds of years, and is often more deeply associated with the setting for the enormous Nazi rallies and the War Crimes trials. Nrnberg now boasts extensive pedestrian walkways and one of the most splendid Christmas Markets in Europe. This huge market has a unique law that only traditional Christmas artefacts are allowed for sale. As dusk approaches, the music and singing, Christmas lights and smell of mulled wine, roasting sausages, chestnuts and sweets fill the air. Fantastic!Meals: B

DAY 11 My Time in Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber and Christmas Markets Today we have included an excursion to visit picture-postcard Rothenburg on the Romantic Road with its delightful cobblestoned streets, ramparts and turrets. Make a point of walking through the famous Christmas Shop known for its stunning displays. The Christmas Markets, set in the narrow alleys are some of the quaintest you will ever see. DAY 1 ~ 21 DECEMBER Munich, Herrenchiemsee Palace and picturesque St.WolfgangYour tour commences this morning at 9.00 am from the Maritim Hotel in Munich. After meeting your Tour Manager, who will be with you for the next eight days, we drive south to the town of Prien on Lake Chiemsee. Here we board a boat to cross over to the island of Herreninsel where we enjoy a guided tour through Mad King Ludwigs Royal Palace of Herrenchiemsee, which was modelled on the Palace of Versailles. Entering Austria we continue to St. Wolfgang and our hotel which will be your home over the next seven nights. This town gave its name to the extraordinarily picturesque Lake Wolfgangsee which is set with a splendid backdrop of snow covered mountains and peaks. Before dinner, enjoy mulled wine or hot chocolate and cookies and take the opportunity to get to meet your fellow Christmas travellers. Throughout your stay we have included daily hot and cold buffet breakfast and 4 course dinners with a choice of menu. DAY 2 ~ 22 DECEMBER The Silent Night Chapel, Salzburg sightseeing, My Time and Christmas Markets We have included a full day excursion today. Enroute to Salzburg our first stop is at the nearby village of Oberndorf where we visit the famous Silent Night Chapel on the site where the Christmas carol was first performed. We then continue onto Salzburg the baroque city of Mozart sitting beneath its enormous Festung (Fortress). A walking tour with an expert local guide will introduce you to this enchanting city, including several locations used in the film The Sound of Music. As a final you will assemble amongst the fir trees in the small stone courtyard of the St Peters Keller, dating back to the 1500s and Salzburgs oldest restaurant, for a hot drink and biscuits. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy the city. Maybe take time to visit the huge castle which is fascinating, and to soak up the atmosphere of the famous Salzburg Christmas markets.Meals: B,D

DAY 3 ~ 23 DECEMBER Berchtesgaden, Salt Mines and beautiful Lake Knigssee Heading deep into the Bavarian mountains we enjoy a fun filled ride which takes us deep into the old Salt Mines near Berchtesgaden. After dressing up in a salt miners uniform, we ride on a small train deep underground, take wooden slides (or steps) and then float on a barge across a crystal clear underground lake, beautifully illuminated by a light show. Lunchtime will be enjoyed in Berchtesgaden, then later we visit what is perhaps the most beautiful Alpine lake of all, Knigssee famous the world over for its steep cliffs and fjord like lake.Meals: B,D

DAY 1 ~ 21 DECEMBER FrankfurtYour tour commences this evening in wonderful Frankfurt: a city of contrasts from modern skyscrapers to beautifully maintained old buildings. There is so much to see and do in the city centre. Dinner tonight is included in your hotel but first, enjoy a welcome drink. This is an ideal opportunity to meet your fellow travellers.Meals: D

DAY 2 ~ 22 DECEMBER Heidelberg, Baden Baden Christmas Markets and HornbergThe ancient university town of Heidelberg is only an hours drive away. Set in the wooded Neckar Valley, with its twin-towered bridge and red sandstone castle, we spend the morning here. Moving on to delightful Baden Baden you will have time to explore the Christmas Market, which is set against the picturesque backdrop of the Kurhaus and the colonnades lit up by thousands of lights, in the heart of the festively decorated old town. Late afternoon we drive deep into the Black Forest to the village of Hornberg where we stay for the next six nights over Christmas. During your stay all breakfasts and dinners are included and there is also Turkey lunch on Christmas Day.Meals: B,D

DAY 3 ~ 23 DECEMBER Medieval Strasbourg and picture perfect GengenbachAfter a leisurely departure this morning we cross the River Rhine and enter France to visit Strasbourg. A local guide will join us to bring to life this historic medieval town. The rest of the day is free to explore the old town. Retaining its old world charm, there are 3 bridges spanning the River Ill, massive fortified towers and pedestrianised streets.

The Christmas Markets around the Place de la Cathdrale and Place Broglie are beautifully decorated and a delight. This traditional Christmas Market, which dates back to 1570, is one of the oldest and finest, and boasts one of the highest Christmas trees in Europe. Time to do that last minute shopping, indulge in the mulled wine, ginger biscuits and Bredele (small Alsatian biscuits), take in the music, fabulously decorated trees and folklore displays.

Late afternoon we cross back into Germany and make a very special stop in the picture postcard village of Gengenbach. The ornate Christmas markets are set in the old town centre which dates back hundreds of years. Behind the giant Christmas tree, the beautiful 18th century town hall becomes the largest advent calendar in the world. Our visit is timed so we are in the markets after dusk as the advent calendar window is opened in celebration.Meals: B,D

DAY 4 ~ 24 DECEMBER Cuckoo Clocks and Lake TitiseeChristmas Eve! An exciting day as we drive through the conifers and snow covered meadows to reach Hofgut Sternen - the Black Forest Village to discover how cuckoo clocks are made, and to enjoy Black Forest gteau and coffee.

Afterwards we enjoy lunchtime on nearby beautiful Lake Titisee. This afternoon, back at your hotel, we have included afternoon tea with Christmas biscuits and later this evening relax and enjoy our traditional festive Christmas Eve dinner.Meals: B,D

DAY 5 ~ 25 DECEMBER Christmas Day My Time in Hornberg, a winter walk and the Hornberg ShootingChristmas Day as it should bein a wonderful location relaxing, eating, drinking and definitely no Indiana Jones repeats or visits from long, lost relatives! This is a day to relax and savour the delights of the valley you are staying in. Nearby you will find numerous hiking paths and walkways to enjoy. A Christmas Day Turkey lunch is included at your hotel. Mid afternoon we have included a guided village walk, followed by cookies and glhwein (mulled wine). Later we gather for the Hornberger shooting. This historical re-enactment provides insight into the local event which took place in 1576.Meals: B,L,D

DAY 6 ~ 26 DECEMBER Hohenzollern Castle, the Black Forest Museum and spectacular Christmas Magic in TribergBoxing Day! We have included a glorious visit to Hohenzollern Castle with its many towers and turrets which are surrounded by ramps and fortifications. The castle rises majestically from atop an 855 metre high mountain overlooking the Swabian Alb (Highlands). We will use a local shuttle bus to travel up the wooded road from the coach park to the castle. This afternoon we continue to the Triberg area to visit the Schwarzwald Museum (Black Forest Museum) with 18 rooms displaying the unique lifestyles, furniture and traditions of the Black Forest and Christmas Magic a spectacular illumination that transforms the area around the Triberg waterfalls.Meals: B,D

DAY 7 ~ 27 DECEMBER Gothic Freiburg and a medieval Banquet dinnerThis morning we are joined by our local guide when we visit the capital of the Black Forest the Gothic city of Freiburg. Sensitively restored, Freiburg is one of the most charming German cities located where the Black Forest meets the Rhine Plain. Arcaded shopping streets and little streams lead through the old town to its great Gothic Mnster with a splendid tower and richly decorated interior.
