A. Europe• Continent of Europe is home to
more than 40 countries• Over 50 languages are spoken in
Europe • Europe is about the same size as
the United States but it has 3 times the population
B. Spread of Nationalism
• Nationalism – A strong pride in one’s nation or ethnic group
• Ethnic Group – People with similar languages and traditions
• Resulted in a strong love for one’s country
C. Constitutional Monarchy
• 1900s – More Europeans are allowed to vote than ever before
• People demanded that they were able to elect their leaders
• Constitutional Monarchy – Kings and queens had to share their power with a group elected by the people
D. Defense of Colonies• Colonialism – System where countries
controlled areas outside its boarders • Most European countries controlled
colonies in Asia and Africa during the early 1900s
• Colonies produced many goods that were sold in Europe
• Colonies became very important to the economies of European countries
• European countries started to build strong armies and navies to defend their colonies
• Control of colonies often times led to wars between European countries
E. Austria-Hungary• Largest empire in Eastern Europe
during the early 1900s• Imported many of its goods from
Germany• Dual Monarchy – One ruler has
control of two nations
