FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME LETTER FROM THE PASTOR PAGE THREE
Last week we were presented with a very de-manding expectation about discipleship: "Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not wor-thy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.” In today’s gospel the tone of Jesus is very different: he is consoling and encouraging. He presents a notion of discipleship not as a burden, but as practical and very reasonable. He even uses himself as a model of how to live the call and de-scribes the call as a “yoke that is easy and the burden light.” It is difficult to reduce Jesus to any one idea of him; he is both demanding and, yet, gentle and kind.
“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened.” Is being a good Christian a burden? Is it an obligation to be a good Christian? The answer that many Christians give to this question is “yes”. They think that being good, com-passionate, and merciful and just person is an obligation and a duty. For Jesus being a good, merciful, compassion-ate and just disciple is not an obligation and duty: it is the nature of what defines the disciple, a citizen of God’s Kingdom. What makes this nature of the disciple possible is the experience of conversion: to know that one is loved, forgiven and accepted by God is to awaken to this new reality in the disciple. This is the experience that drives and motivates Jesus. This nature flows from Jesus’ rela-tionship with God the Father. This is what Jesus longs for his disciples and for us: to have a relationship of intimacy and trust with God from with this nature flows. Jesus is willing to comfort us, even when we think discipleship is a burden, but he wants to set us right on the foundation of discipleship.
Jesus uses the yoke as a symbol for discipleship. At face value the yoke may seem as an instrument of burden and suffering, but in reality the yoke is an instrument that makes the strength and work of the ox practical and pro-ductive. The yoke of the gospel and the yoke of disciple-ship give direction, purpose and fruitfulness to the disci-ple. When two or more animals are tied to a common yoke, the yoke not only distributes the load that they are pulling, but it also allows the animals to work to together efficiently. Jesus invites us to imitate him, to put on the yoke of the gospel, the yoke of love: “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me.” He describes his yoke as easy and the burden light. Is this what you/we experience? Is Jesus deceiving us or are we unwilling to trust that life in him is easy and the burden light?
Fr. Tony Diaz, CMF Pastor
Faith Formation Summer Hours Mon – Thurs: 11:00am – 9:00pm Fri – Sun: Closed
Faith Formation, The Future of Our Church Today our children’s lives are a bustling schedule of constant activities and social events. Catholic parents are challenged to create a meaningful faith formation for their children, competing with a world filled with the distraction of sports, clubs, television, Internet and video games. At the San Gabriel Mission we have faith formation programs that are offered for adults and children that provide spiritual growth opportunities. Parents should build ‘down’ time with their children to cultivate spirituality, “Children need to be reminded they have been given a great gift of life to live. They need to learn how to pray and take time to pray, and make time for soli-tude and reflection. Children naturally believe in God, but if the parents don’t affirm it, it will dissipate.” Our Office of Religious Education is engaged in continuing the mission of Jesus Christ through evangelization and catechesis. As a community of faith they are called to discover and give meaning to the Gospel message through word, worship and service. We offer numerous children’s (and adult) faith formation programs focused on the family, the cate-chist and the church community. Classes are held on morality, sacramental preparations, diverse prayer experiences and Liturgical year education celebrations programs. An easy approach to begin developing children’s faith formation is to commit time each week for the family to say the Rosary or simply to share grace before a meal. It doesn’t have to take a lot of time, but it is a commitment. Lighting a candle and saying a short prayer can be the beginning of developing faith formation within a family. Praying together promotes spiritual growth and repeated prac-tices will help the children to develop their spirituality. Parents should encourage the children to share their religious education with the family. The building of a family structure further develops when the parents and children discuss the children’s religious education at home. Other ways that families can develop a faith formation is to check the Liturgical calendar and make an effort during Lent and Advent to say the Rosary together. In her book, “Forming Intentional Disciples: The Path to Knowing and Following Jesus”, author Sherry Weddell emphasizes that the Church’s goal must be to help anyone who is open to developing a positive inward disposition that wants to do God’s will. Statistics tell us that only 30 percent of Americans who were raised Catholics are still practicing and 10 percent of all adults in the U.S. are ex-Catholics; statistics also show that the number of marriages celebrated in the Church has de-creased by nearly 60 percent between 1972 and 2010. If the Church is to reverse these trends, then the evangelizers must be evangelized. To help parents develop and maintain faith formation for our children is a major challenge for Catholics today, and the Catholic Church, we continue to strive to educate and put programs in place to help the faithful.

Eva Garcia- Principal sangabrielmissionelementaryschool 626-281-2454
San Gabriel Mission Elementary School BIENVENIDA A LA NUEVA DIRECTORA DE LA ESCUELA ELEMENTAL
Sinceramente, Eva Garcia
