IDENTIFIED RTD TOPICS FOR FUTURE EU-CHINA COLLABORATION IN AERONAUTICS

KGT1: Propulsion related green technologies

KGT1-1 PropulsionKGT1-1 has been oriented to research areas such as low-emission combustion, combustors, internal flows, aerothermal studies and optimization design for aviation applications towards green propulsion technologies. In the context of collaboration between the EU and China, the following potential projects have been identified:1. Low Pressure Turbine (LPT) aerodynamics and heat transfer2. control technologies (boundary layer control through blowing/sucking and surface roughness

optimization)3. multidisciplinary design and optimization of turbomachinery components.

KGT1-2 New Energy for AviationKGT1-2 has been set-up in the frame of the Europe and international engagement in term of emission reduction. Within Europe, this has been facilitated by a coherent research strategy, regulatory enablers and streamlined certification and approval processes and the development of new technologies for aviation. In the frame of the EU-China collaboration, several topics linked to new energy can be addressed. The preliminary discussions during GRAIN2 CSA permitted to identify the following potential RTD topics:1. Innovative fuels for aeronautics: New pathways to produce drop-in fuels; Certification; Engine

performance2. Electric energy: Energy storage; Superconductivity

IDENTIFIED RTD TOPICS FOR FUTURE EU-CHINA COLLABORATION IN AERONAUTICS

KGT2: Airframe Flight Physics KGT2 focuses on identification of new emerging green technologies, of mutual interest, for airframe flight physics by means of working on two main tasks:

Noise reduction1. Advanced experimental and numerical methodologies for analysing noise

generation and propagation. 2. Innovative noise control/reduction technologies3. Low-noise concepts and installation effects

Drag and CO2 reduction1. Advanced simulation of high Reynolds number range, realistic setting controlled

flows on large/innovative HPC architectures.2. Advanced turbulent models for Computational Fluid Dynamics for modelling

detached flows and laminar-turbulent transition.3. Multidisciplinary optimization technology for innovative aircraft configurations

including local flow control applications.4. Instability analysis and unsteadiness control in aircraft design.

IDENTIFIED RTD TOPICS FOR FUTURE EU-CHINA COLLABORATION IN AERONAUTICS

KGT3: Environmental friendly materials and structures

For future aerospace structures new environmentally friendly, bio-sourced materials should be investigated in order to replace current materials. These materials may not be able to compete with current materials if only load-carrying capabilities are considered, but they provide additional advantages like acoustic damping and can be combined with additional functional integration. To assure the mechanical integrity and to pave the way for a more demand-driven and efficient maintenance structural health monitoring (SHM) technology will be integrated into the structures.

This idea will be covered by roughly 4 research topics1. Environmentally friendly materials – Detailed investigation of one (or very few) specific

bio-sourced material2. Environmental impact – manufacturing, recycling etc.3. Functional integration – using/enhancing inherent material properties and adding

additional functionality4. SHM – Sensing damages, maintenance strategies

IDENTIFIED RTD TOPICS FOR FUTURE EU-CHINA COLLABORATION IN AERONAUTICS

KGT4: CNS/ATM for greener air transport

The main objective of KGT4 is to improve the knowledge and capability of how CNS/ATM systems and technology can be used to reduce environmental footprint. Thus, environmentally optimised aircraft procedures will be tackled along with systems, concepts and technologies aiming at increasing the automation levels in ATM.

1. Greener Flight Trajectory Operations, including a.o. 4D trajectory planning and optimisation, multi-mode satellite based and Performance Based Navigation. With the ambition is to propose a joint EU/CN inflight demonstration of greener flight trajectories.

2. Collaborative Network Management. Applying improved network wide flight planning, advanced flexible use of airspace, enhanced ground support for future 4D strategic and tactical air traffic management

Page 18: EU-China Research Cooperation in - aerodays2015 · EU-China Research Cooperation in Aeronautics Technologies – GRAIN 2 International Cooperation in Aeronautics Research Gabriel

- Open Networking Project events: workshops have to be more attractive and open to outside experts

- Cultural differences:- European learnt how to deal with Chinese top-down

hierarchy regarding decision-taking procedures.- Chinese learnt how to comply with EC requirements in

EU-China projects- Industrial Interest : slowed down due to Industrial competition- Priority cooperative ground: Industry in Europe looking for

topics ensuring win-win situations - Communication between European and Chinese partners

could be further enhanced

LESSONS LEARNT from the COOPERATION

Page 19: EU-China Research Cooperation in - aerodays2015 · EU-China Research Cooperation in Aeronautics Technologies – GRAIN 2 International Cooperation in Aeronautics Research Gabriel

Opportunities- Research capabilities in China of high quality.- Availability of large infrastructures for industry and research in China

(manufacturing facilities, test facilities)- Ensure win-win situations in projects for industrial relationship- “Fair” scientific and technology transfer ?- Increase “mobility of young researchers between China and Europe (like Marie

Curie) in Aeronautics

Challenges- EU-China projects well in the line of H2020 Green Technologies since 2005- Growing air traffic in China; ATM and communications challenges. Integration of

this traffic at an international level (GRAIN2 prospect and beyond... ).- Business jet Aviation development in China (Falcon family ???) - UAV integration in Chinese airspace for urban mobile services ( surveillance,

security, products delivery ,...)- Extend Green Aeronautical technologies to Green Transport (Automotive

,Marine, Maritime,...) in China.
