Document1French,CharlotteNarayanasamy,AruToprayornottopray:aquestionofethics.Britishjournalofnursing(MarkAllenPublishing)2011Oct132720(18):1198200,12024Abstract:Thereisawidespreadbeliefthatnurseshaveadutytoprovidespiritualcare.However,manyfeelthereisstillaneedfordebatesurroundingtheethicaluseofprayerinbothnursingresearchandpractice.Byusingcriticalreflectionsandevidencebasedliterature,thispaperdevelopsadiscourseontheethicsofprayerasaspiritualinterventioninnursingandhealthcarepractice.Severalkeyethicalissuesarehighlighted.Inregardstoresearch,lackofinformedconsentisamajorconcerninbothresearchandnursingpractice.Keyethicalissuesinpracticeincludequestionsaroundintentionandauthority,e.g.despitethereligiousbeliefsofthenurse,intentionstoproselytizemustbeavoidedtoprotectpatientautonomyandavoidabuseofthenurse'sauthority.Furthermore,prayerhasunknownsideeffectsandimplications.Thispaperconcludesthat,inpractice,nursesmustreconciletheirpersonal,spiritualbeliefswiththeirprofessionalduties,andwhilethismaybeadelicatebalance,itisnotyetappropriatetoencourageordissuadeapatientfromtheirbeliefsuntilappropriateresearchevidenceisproduced.
