Ethics 2012:Create Your Island

Ultimate Goal:Be The most Ethical Island

How:Earn points individually and as an island in group challenges

Benefits:The most ethical island may forgo the final, and proceed to the Most Ethical Island Party.

There are a group of islands in the ocean

that have been abandoned. Each of

you will inhabit the islands, with your

classmates, for the next 10 weeks.

Once you have chosen which island to inhabit, you will create a code of conduct (AKA Ethics Code) for your island.

This will describe proper behavior for anyone

who lives on or comes to your island.

Additionally, your island is a part of a group of

islands that have decided to unify. You

will also need to create a charter for these islands (later in the

course).Throughout the course, your island must work

as a group to accomplish all tasks

within the course and ultimately be The Most

Ethical Island…

Think First- Brainstorm• 1. Tailor-make your code.

• What makes your Code specific to your group?

• 2. Get everyone involved.• The people who will be guided by the code

should be actively involved in writing it

• 3. Consult key stakeholders. • For example, other students in the class,

professors/ dean, and other students at school, librarian, family

• 4. Outsource the job only carefully. • Hiring a consultant to help write your code can

be useful – but don’t let them take over

• 5. Seek out good examples. • Look for relevant examples

• 6. Be clear about Scope.• Make it clear who within your organization will

be governed by it. Does it cover everyone? Only senior managers? Keep in mind that lower-level employees may not take very seriously a document that senior managers either aren’t bound by, or take lightly

• 7. Be specific about implementation. • explain to all concerned how the

values embodied in your Code will be put into practice.

• 8. Plan for education. • How will group members be educated about the

Code? A Code can only be effective if your group members know about it. Will new members receive training regarding the Code’s requirements? Will current group members receive refresher courses?

• 9. Be clear about enforcement. • How, if at all, will the Code be enforced? Are

there specific penalties for violating the Code, or is the Code merely there to provide guidance? Who will decide when a group member has violated the Code – will that be left up to the professor or will that be the exclusive domain of group managers, or group members?

• 10. Specify a sunset date. • When will the code be reviewed and updated

Page 33: Ethics

33

Put It all Together• Compile all this information into one concise document.• Submit the completed document in Moodle under each

members name.
