Dear BRIDGE Editors,

On behalf of the Mu Chapter of the Eta Kappa Nu Association at the University of California-Berkeley, we proudly submit the attached report of our chapter’s activities and accomplishmentsduring the 2003-2004 school year. Our chapter is amongst the most active groups on Berkeley’s33,000-student campus. In addition to maintaining the numerous services that our chapter hashistorically provided, such as daily tutoring, exam files and course surveys, we also continuallystrive to expand the range of activities and services that we involve ourselves in.

This past year, we have improved our chapter in several ways. The Industrial Relations Committeehas become more active, organizing more corporate information sessions with a greater range ofcompanies and also maintaining good working relationships with these firms. Also, we have beenencouraging members to assume a more active role in the chapter– a good number of membersoffered their services for tutoring and took care of logistics for the Career Fair, amongst numerousother activities that the Mu Chapter organizes. In addition, our chapter has implemented a newcourse survey system, which was written as a freely distributed open source project by one of ourofficers. The system, very popular with the department and students, is more robust and easier touse than ever. In fact, it has even been deployed at other schools such as Colorado State.

For your convenience, our activities are split into four main categories:· “Service,” covering our activities to benefit the general student body, our department and college, and the surrounding community,· “Outreach,” covering our efforts to connect with groups that we can interact and learn from – our alumni, other HKN chapters and other Berkeley engineering societies, and industry.· “Social,” athletic and mixer social events created to uphold chapter morale and help Mu Chapter members, candidates and officers bond while taking a break from their studies.· “Official Business,” the standard events and ceremonies needed to run and perpetuate the chapter.

For an overview of all our activities, you may skim the first page of each section, or read the reportin its entirety for a more thorough view of each event. A calendar of our events from the past yearis provided in the back for your reference. The Mu Chapter cordially invites you to take a look intoour chapter through this report in hopes that you may understand why our chapter is so wellrespected in our department, why our members are very dedicated to keeping the chapter soactive and why we continue to grow every year.

Sincerely,The Mu Chapter Bridge Committee

HKN Mu Chapter Annual Report 2003-2004 1

HKN Mu Chapter involves itself in numerous ac-tivities, but amongst them, the services that weprovide to the Berkeley EECS Department, theEECS student body and the greater surroundingcommunity are particularly close to our hearts. Inthe past year, we continued to provide our mostwell-received services, such as free tutoring, course surveys, GRE review sessions, donut runsand exam files. We also added class study ses-sions, where students can gather and prepare forupcoming midterms together. In addition, a newcourse survey software was developed – this newaddition is highly popular with the EECS depart-ment and student body because it is cleaner andfar easier to user interface. Apart from this, theExam Files officers have also been very diligentthe past two semesters – they were able to clearthe backlog such that all the paper exams that wehad been holding on to have been converted andput up online.

It was a warm Sunday morning when the Mu Chapter helped out at Emerson El-ementary School’s annual Spring Fair. Members and candidates set up and ran booths, which were targeted mainly towards elementary school students. Together with theirparents, the kids would play games and earn attractive prizes. One of the morepopular games involved tossing ping pong balls into cups of water that are placedabout 1.5-2 meters away from the children. If the child succeeded, he or she wasawarded a goldfish! Apart from being a fundraiser, the Spring Fair was an excellentopportunity for HKN members to contribute to the local community and interactwith the younger generation, something that is somewhat rare in college.

The Mu Chapter has been volunteering with the TrailCenter of Santa Clara County since the summer of 2000.Several days over the past year, HKNers began work atthe crack of dawn to maintain and "hack" new trails ofthe Arastradero Preserve in Palo Alto - a communityfavorite for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Thisyear the Mu Chapter helped to reconstruct switchbacksto prevent trail erosion.

Eggster is an annual community ser-vice activity in which various studentorganizations and fraternities put onan event for kids, particularly the dis-advantaged. HKN members helpedbuild and run booths that providedfun, enriching activities for the chil-dren. One of the booths featured pa-per boats kids built and blew aroundthe water; with the guidance of HKNmembers, they learned a little aboutaerodynamics. Many other boothstaught other scientific principles. Atthe dancing booths, members and officers danced around and taught the childrenhow to enjoy themselves and shake what they have. In addition, Mu Chapter mem-bers helped run several egg hunts over UC Berkeley’s grassy campus for children ofmany age groups.

Working together closelywith the EECS department,Mu Chapter members andofficers organize graduateschool workshops duringthe school year for studentsinterested in learning moreabout graduate school andits requirements. Through-out our graduate workshopseries, we invited severalprofessors and administra-tors to speak about themany aspects of graduateschool education and the

necessary steps that need to be taken to improve chances of getting into a goodgraduate program.

Sheila Humphreys, Director of EECS student matters, enlightened students aboutthe admissions process and how to stay on top of a flurry of deadlines. Severalprofessors visited UC Berkeley to talk about graduate school. Associate ProfessorKlara Nahrstedt talked about graduate life at UIUC. Professor C.K. Cheng from UCSan Diego gave his perspective on evaluating graduate applications. UCSD’s facultyis still growing and, with that, so is the number of accepted applicants. To accom-modate the growing number of people, UCSD will have a new facility opening winter2004.

In a large university such as Berkeley , it is easyfor students to be confounded by the complexcourse requirements and the multitude of classesavailable. To alleviate their confusion, HKN of-fers peer advising sessions, in which experiencedstudents answer questions about professors andcourses, as well as give any general advice oncollege life. At these sessions, students talk can-didly, find project partners, and plan out theircollege careers over drinks and cookies.

The week before school starts, new andreturning students are invited to par-ticipate in gatherings to kick off theschool year. Some of these activitiesinvolve student groups guiding new stu-dents through informative tabling andorientations. HKN members partici-pated in an EECS “real life” panel thatallows incoming students to ask anyquestions they have about the upcom-ing year. We also helped out the de-partment with an ice cream social thatwas put on to allow students, past andpresent, to mingle with faculty.

Tutoring is one of the Mu Chapter’s top priori-ties when it comes to serving students and fac-ulty. Each officer is available for 2 hours a weekin one of our offices in Soda (the ComputerScience building) or Cory (the Electrical Engi-neering building); together, they provide free tu-toring for both introductory and advancedcourses from 10 AM to 4 PM. Mu Chaptertutors also frequently take on individual tutor-ing requests outside of regular tutoring hoursto help individuals who are in dire need to getup to speed in their classes. To complementour tutoring services, our chapter has also startedstudy sessions for several large lower divisionclasses.

Tutoring

One of HKN’s academic services consists of our collec-tion of past exams in many EE and CS courses. Studentsare asked to donate any exams that they may have. Bothphysical and online copies of exams and solutions areavailable in our offices or online; students borrow physi-cal copies or read digital copies. Our archives extend backto the early 1990s.

Faculty MixersOne of the best ways to get studentsand faculty to mingle is to entice themwith free food. The Mu Chapter helpsthe department with several student-fac-ulty mixers during the year. At thesemixers, professors share with enthusi-astic students about exciting fields ofresearch and interesting classes to take.As students and faculty mingle at thesemixers, they learn that they share manycommon interests outside of school asthey talk about sports, entertainment, and fun news.

Every year, HKN and other engineer-ing societies thank alumni who havegiven back to their alma mater by writ-ing thank-you notes. Groups of stu-dents gather around a table for acouple of hours, competing to writethe most notes. These lucky Berke-ley Engineering alumni each receivepersonal letters from a current engi-neering student thanking them for theguidance and help that they have pro-vided for the College of Engineering.Afterwards, the College of Engineer-

ing staff quizzed the participating students on facts about the college in an effort toenlighten the young minds about various ways in which past graduates have made adifference today.

During the spring semester, EECS facultygathered over a weekend to discuss issuesrelevant to the department. They gave vari-ous EECS student groups, including HKN,the chance to present undergraduates’ con-cerns about the department. Among the top-ics brought up were courses, academic re-quirements, and the quality of life in the EECS buildings. Our presentation wasbased on an online survey of undergraduates in EECS that the Mu Chapter con-ducted during the school year.

Whenever graduation rolls around, all ofus here at the Mu Chapter find it to be abittersweet moment. Continuing studentsfrom our chapter worked with the EECSdepartment to hold a reception on BechtelTerrace as a way to show our apprecia-tion and support for all the hard work thatgraduating EECS students have put intotheir college careers. Faculty and stu-dents, along with their families, reflect onthe past and talk about future plans oversparkling cider, fruit and snacks.

Cal DayOn Cal Day, prospective freshmen and their parents visit UC Berkeley to get a tasteof what the university and EECS department are all about. HKNers lead tours aroundCory Hall, the home of our EECS department. They answer any questions about theuniversity and assuage the fears of anxious parents while showing them the labs, classrooms, and neater features of Cory hall. Cal Day visitors also had the chance tosee class projects such as a digital mini-router and robotic vehicle from engineeringdesign courses.

At the end of each semester, HKN conducts sur-veys for each EECS course. Students evaluate theirprofessors and teaching assistants on several crite-ria, such as their style of presentation and approach-ability. Additionally, they note how much work thecourse required, how fast the pace was, and howworthwhile the experience was, overall. After thedepartment processes surveys, we enter the resultsinto our online database, which provides listings thatdate years back. Course surveys are important toboth the department and students, since they reporthow students perceive the teaching of EECScourses.

Since many undergraduate classes in a university likeBerkeley contain a hundred or more students, good GSIs(Graduate Student Instructors) are crucial for providingthe one-on-one interaction professors cannot offer toeach student. For many students, GSIs are easier toapproach because they are students themselves. To rec-ognize exceptional GSIs, HKN and IEEE ask under-graduates to nominate their favorite GSIs. At the end ofthe semester, several outstanding GSIs are acknowledgedand the top GSI’s name is added to a plaque on displayin Cory hall, the EE building.

One of the services to the EECS communitythat the Mu Chapter finds very important isthe building of relationships between faculty, administration, and students. The dunk tankwas a great event for doing so. Several EECSprofessors and staff participated, includingfaculty members Mike Clancy, AndyNeureuther, Sheila Ross, and the director ofundergraduate student matters, SheilaHumphreys. Faculty, students and staff gath-ered in front of MacLaughlin Hall near theengineering terrace to watch the spectacle asstudents tried to dunk their favorite professors (all in good fun of course!). Profes-sor Neureuther, one of the dunkees, jested at students with a mock diploma propthat he had brought for the event, ”This diploma can be yours, if only you can hit thetarget!”

To stay current and relevant to students and alumni,Mu chapter must maintain connections with theworld outside our offices and the EECS depart-ment. Current members need to stay in contact withalumni, other engineering societies, and industryto benefit the most from their time as undergradu-ates.

Mu chapter has improved in outreach in severalways this past year. Most notably, the IndustrialRelations Committee organized a technical careerfair, which gave any student interested in techni-cal jobs a chance to begin networking and find outwhat working for different companies was like.Additionally, they improved our working relation-ships with industrial representatives. The StudentRelations Committee improved our relation withEECS students in general by running Casino night, where students gambled with fake money.

Like a family, membership in HKN is for life. Tokeep the alumni in touch with each other, we ac-tively encourage alumni to opt into our mailing listand database of contacts. We also constantlyupdate the alumni with the activities that the cur-rent generation is pursuing by distributing a monthlynewsletter.

Alumni Database and Newsletter

This semi-annual event is traditionallyscheduled for the start of each semes-ter. It is a chance for the alumni toeducate the new officers on HKN tra-ditions. At these dinners, everyone -old and new - shares their best memo-ries of HKN. As suggested by itsname, the appreciation dinner is a timeto acknowledge the alumni for theirpast contributions, the traditions theyinstalled, and their continuing supportof the chapter.

As a way to strengthen our friendship withour officemate UPE (Upsilon Pi Epsilon —the Computer Science honor society), thetwo societies get together for some fun andexercise with broomball every semester. Inthe fall, HKN took on UPE in a fun gameof broomball. Though Mu chapter walkedaway with a victory of 3-0 both organiza-tions had a great time getting to meet mem-bers from the other society. In the spring, the eagerness of members from both soci-eties to play broomball, ended up with some fun and healthy team mixing. Membersfrom both organizations learned that it was just as fun to compete as it was to worktogether towards a common goal.

It is becoming a tradition for HKN membersto play basketball against TBP (an engineer-ing honor society) every semester. It turnedout to be a fine day for the series of basket-ball games. When the going gets tough, thetough play shirt and skins. It was TBP vs.HKN — Shirts vs. Skins. Four games wereplayed, and the scores are quite easy toremember: 11-4, 6-11, 11-4, and 11-6. Infosessions are popular forums for recruitment.Students learn about the work environment inthe industry, the projects companies are work-ing on, qualifications that recruiters look out for,and even futuristic ideas and trends that variouscompanies are pursuing. Prizes are often raffledoff by the companies to attract more students. In the 2003-2004 school year, the Mu Chaptercoordinated 12 infosessions for companies suchas Microsoft, Amazon, Yahoo, IBM, and vari-ous others.

Amazon:

Amazon.com representatives from their Engineering, Fulfillment, and Customer Sup-port departments visited Cal to tell students how it feels to work for the largest e-

“One of our main goals for that semester was to build thereputation of Berkeley HKN to companies. All in all, I thinkthe site visits accomplished that. The three companies that wevisited still have very fond memories of HKN and its students.”

Traditionally, the EECS Career Fair is the largesttechnical career fair held on the Berkeley campusand is the only fair specifically targeting studentsmajoring in Electrical Engineering and ComputerScience. This past year, the EECS Career Fairwas more successful than ever. Numerous well-known companies attended the event which at-tracted hundreds of highly motivated and highlyqualified Berkeley students, particularly thosemajoring in EECS.

To put on such a large event, the Mu chapter Industrial Relations Committee startedplanning the summer of 2003 and diligently worked on it until the day of the careerfair. Members, alumni, and the entire officer corps helped out to guarantee the event’ssuccess. Over 650 students attended the career fair. It not only gave the studentbodies a chance to meet representatives from industry, but it also improved the Muchapter’s relations with these companies.

HKN Mu Chapter Annual Report 2003-2004 25

The core of Mu chapter consists of its members.Without them, HKN could not perform its respon-sibilities to the EECS community. Often, mem-bers describe HKN as a “family”; that is how closeHKN keeps its members. A chapter that never fa-cilitated socialization among members wouldquickly find itself divided and incapable of pull-ing members together for outreach and service.

Mu chapter takes part in many social activitieseach semester, including movie nights, ice creamsocials, and game nights. Events may be smallgatherings giving members the chance to get toknow each other better or large events whereHKNers can just have fun. Although most HKNmembers and candidates are busy with theworkload of their major along with many otherobligations, they value the social activities of Muchapter; with about one event per week, we stillhave good attendance.

Ice Cream SocialsAmongst our most popular events, ice creamsocials bring a whole new meaning to “chillingout”. These gatherings are excellent opportuni-ties for members and candidates to come to-gether for some mingling and dessert after a busyday at school. Capture the FlagAs a stereotype, EECS majors typically neglect exer-cise as a result of their busy schedules. In an effort todispel this myth, HKN Mu Chapter organizes severalCapture The Flag games each semester, where partici-pants are divided into two teams and each team is re-quired to roam several acres of campus territory in aneffort to locate and steal their opponent’s flag. Apartfrom “attack” strategies, teams must not forget aboutthe importance of defending their own flag – the excel-

lent 4-man defense of the Yellow team in Fall ’03 proved impenetrable and wrought awin for their team by capturing and jailing several Red members. These tacticalgames are an exercise of strategy, orienteering and teamwork and are all in all, excel-lent ways for strangers to break the ice.

With the many activities Mu chapter offers, it canbe easy for members to lose sight of the greaterwhole of HKN. The day after initiation and banquet, officerelections take place, drawing on momentumfrom the previous night’s events. Membersand officers, both current and past, come tooffer candid suggestions on the future of Muchapter by assessing the current state of thesociety. The entire process requires a totalof 6-7 hours, because of the depth at whichmembers discuss officer candidates. Allmembers are invited and encouraged to runfor an office if they desire to lead the chapterin future endeavors.

Officer Elections

With a close knit officer corps, HKN can bet-ter serve the community, department and stu-dents. It is at the officer retreat that the of-ficer corps is brought together as a close fam-ily. Shortly after the start of each semester, all officers spend a weekend learning to worktogether through entertaining and unifying ac-tivities. New officers learn from the experi-enced officers, and both learn more aboutthe other’s point of view. The time spent to-gether also helps officers relate to each other

on a personal level. Retreats were held at North Lake Tahoe last fall and Santa Cruzin the spring.
