Abstract The Mu Chapter of Eta Kappa Nu,founded in 1915 at the Universityof California at Berkeley, is an ac-tive presence in the Electrical Engi-neering and Computer Sciences de-partment here at Berkeley, as wellas in the College of Engineering andBerkeley campus. One of the mostactive student organizations oncampus, the Mu Chapter providesmany services to both the studentbody and community. Among thoseoffered to the students are free tu-toring, peer advising, administeringcourse evaluations, infosessions, faculty mixers, job fairs, and tech talks. Inaddition, the Mu Chapter has a strong tradition of helping out in the commu-nity by participating in many projects, such as Berkeley Neighborhood Com-puting, the Eggster festival, trail building, and the Alameda Food Bank. Be-sides offering services, the Mu Chapter provides many social and fun activi-ties for its members, candidates, and alumni. Outings range from traditional

favorites, like broomball and picnics,to big events, like the U2 concertand a San Jose Sharks hockey game. The Mu chapter would like to inviteyou to take a look into our world andhopes you learn more about ourdeeply involved chapter.

Initiation is a time of new begin-nings and new opportunities. At ini-tiation, the HKN candidate class be-comes full members of HKN. Thesecandidates become the future of MuChapter as both the members thatattend events and the pool that newofficers are drawn from. The HKN of-ficers present HKN’s philosophy tothe candidate class and watch aseach one is sworn in. Following thissolemn procedure, the current mem-bers congratulate the new initiates.

Initiation

After initiation, HKN goesout to eat in style; only$$$$$ (5-dollar-sign) foodfor our ***** (5-star) mem-bers. In the fall, ProfessorPapadimitriou treated themembers to a sagacious ac-count of his life experiences(including a run in with ayoung Bill Gates). In thespring, Professor Berlekampregaled members, old andnew, with the story of therise of Berkeley EECS andpuzzled them with a hatproblem that is stumping

mathematicians the world over (http://www.nytimes.com/2001/04/10/sci-ence/10MATH.html). Afterwards, outstanding members were acknowledged, and everybody was treated to a grand slideshow recapping the semester’sevents and activities.

HKN Mu Chapter officersare a hardy bunch. Aftersurviving the rigors of can-didacy, they choose to leadmembers and new candi-dates into the following se-mester. Promising that thenext semester will be evenmore exciting than the last, members of HKN give state-ments of purpose, deliverpresentations, tell jokes, and in general try to con-vince the other membersthat they should be part ofthe next officer corps. Theseelections ensure that HKNhas excellent leadership for future semesters.

HKN had some in-spiring speakers at itsgeneral meetings inthe past year. Mem-bers and candidatesat the first generalmeeting were treatedto Professor Kahan’sstory about the use ofEE technology to de-feat German U-Boatsin World War II. Thiswas followed in thenext meeting by anengaging descriptionof the “alpha geek” byXerox Parc’s Dr. EdChi. Another meet-ing featured Professor Landay’s exposition on the future of user interfaces ofinformation devices. Current trends made their way into HKN’s meetings in

the form of a wonder-ful presentation byInformatica about e-business and a paneldiscussion of the prosand cons of joining atechnical startup com-pany. However, thebest corporate talewas an exclusive storyabout the early days ofamihotornot.com fromits creators (Mu Chap-ter alumni). Followingthese presentations, officers, members, andcandidates enjoyedopportunities to social-ize and learn abouteach another.

After learning of their eligibil-ity to join HKN, candidates meetwith one or more officers on anindividual basis and get their firsttaste of HKN’s camaraderie. Of-ficers ask candidates about theirhobbies, skills, favorite trees(Oak trees or Binary trees?),families, and class schedules.Candidates get a chance to askany questions they have aboutthe benefits and requirements ofjoining HKN. The beginning ofmany long-lasting bonds be-tween candidates and officersdevelop during these meetings.

Candidate Conversations

Officer Meetings

Every week, the HKN of-ficer corps meets to discussevents and issues impor-tant to HKN. These meet-ings are held in Cory Hall, the EE building on the Ber-keley campus, and gener-ally last a little over an hour. The president presides overthese meetings, providingboth an agenda and lead-ing the discussion.Oftentimes, the officers alsodiscuss new ideas and pro-posals. All officers are re-quired to attend thesemeetings, since it is impor-

tant for everyone to know what is going on. The recording secretary takesnotes and makes the minutes available to all officers and members.

Annual Job Fair:

HKN Mu chapter held its second annual job fair on February 7th, 2001.Over six hundred students in Electrical Engineering and Computer Scienceand related fields gathered in the Pauley Ballroom at the Student Union tolook at, talk to, and hand resumes to over sixty companies that attended thisyear. Among the companies in attendance were notable names such as3Com, Compaq, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, nVidia, and Yahoo!.

As one of the student ser-vices we provide, infosessionsare a great way for studentsto interact with many high-tech companies, especiallythose in the San Francisco BayArea. They are a win-win so-lution for both companies andstudents — companies can ef-fectively spread their namesout to students, and studentsare able to land lucrative jobsthrough them (and dine onarguably the best deep-dishstuffed pizza outside of Chi-cago). During the past schoolyear, HKN hosted many infosessions for companies like Inktomi, IBM, Oracle,Raytheon, Cisco, and Microsoft; several such infosessions drew crowds in ex-cess of a hundred students!

Infosessions

As grizzled veterans of the EECS program, HKN members meet every se-mester to dispense advice to the younger and less knowledgeable of the de-

partment. Over department-provided sandwiches (there’salways food), HKN membersdescribe their experiences withparticular professors, classes, and the signup process. Theseadvising sessions provide achance for anybody to find theperfect selection of classes tofit their interests. When thesessions end, the younger stu-dents leave armed with thenecessary knowledge to com-plete their degree in the bestpossible way.

During the fall semester, one of HKN’s candidates, Nathan Klejwa, single-handedly ran the weekly EE40 social hour. EE40 is Berkeley’s introductoryclass in microelectronic circuits. Each week, a professor from the EECS de-partment was invited to give an informal presentation about his/her currentresearch topics. Though held on Friday afternoons, the social hours werepopular, as both the professors and many students attended them. Theywere an excellent way to converse with professors on many different mat-ters, academic or not. And of course, everyone got free food.

EE 40 Social Hour

Faculty Mixer

In an effort to bring EECS professors and students closer together, HKNhosts a faculty mixer every semester. Held during lunch hour, the mixersare immensely popular (100+ people came) among both professors andstudents. Free food is the magnet that draws the participants, but studentssoon find that professors are actually people as well. You never know —your professor may have interests outside of solid-state devices or algo-rithms!

Course sur-veys are one ofthe servicesHKN providesfor the ElectricalEngineering andComputer Sci-ence depart-ment and stu-dents at Berke-ley. At the endof every semes-ter, HKN visitseach class of-fered by theEECS depart-ment and con-ducts the coursesurveys. Aftercollecting all theforms, HKNsorts them and hands them over to the department to process. HKN receivesthe results from the department and posts them on the website, so studentscan decide which classes and professors they should avoid and so professorscan find out what their strengths and weaknesses are. Course surveys arevery important to everyone in the EECS community, and HKN is proud to holdthe enviable position of conducting them.

Course Surveys

GRE Review

Helping their peers, HKN held a GRE review for students considering gradschool. A small panel of graduate students gave a short reviews about theclasses that are important for the GRE. Students spent the afternoon discuss-ing areas of importance with the panel and with each other. After a gruelingfive hours of study, HKN served food to congratulate everyone for a good day'swork.

One of the best servicesthat HKN provides to the Berke-ley EECS community is drop-intutoring sessions. These ses-sions are held in HKN's offices inboth the Computer Science andElectrical Engineering buildings. The HKN officer corps believesin helping everyone who wantsto spend the time, so every of-ficer spends two hours per weekstaffing the offices. Every week-day from 10am to 4pm, those of-ficers provide tutoring for CS, EE,and even the odd Math or Phys-ics class. Whenever a studentneeds help with the definition of static, or Fourier Transforms, or why #definedoesn't work, HKN is always there with the answer.

Donut Runs

For students spend-ing late nights workingin the computer labs,HKN provides a specialtreat. On certainnights before bigprojects are due, HKNcleans out the local do-nut shop and providesfree donuts for thosestudents. The donutsprovide much-neededenergy for the studentsto finish up theirprojects.

Engineering Day (E-Day) andEngineering Week (E-Week) areannual events HKN participates inas a service to Berkeley students.E-Day happens during the Fall se-mester and is an invitation tonewly admitted community col-lege students to come to Berke-ley and learn more about theirmajors. HKN attracted many stu-dents with a chance to win a sliceof pie by bobbing for apples. E-Week, held during the Springsemester, is an opportunity for all

engineering societies to attract po-tential members. For E-Week, HKNhosted many activities, includingring toss, a barbeque, and evenDance Dance Revolution. Many en-gineering students disproved thebelief that engineers can’t dance!

On Cal Day, Berkeley’sannual open house for thecommunity, HKN set up itsown table in the engineer-ing part of campus. Themain purpose of tabling wasto provide information fornewly admitted BerkeleyEECS students and to con-vince them to come to Ber-keley. The main attractionwas “foil boat engineering”— a competition to build aboat out of aluminum foilthat can hold the most pen-nies.

Cal Day

Many participated inthis enjoyable event, and some boats wereable to hold upwards of50 pennies. Later thatday, many HKN officersstaffed the EECS Q&Apanel, where new ad-mits and their parentsasked all sorts of ques-tions, and the officersprovided detailed re-sponses.

Community

The children are our future;with that thought in mind, HKNhelped out by volunteering atthe annual Eggster learningevent. Dozens of Berkeleygroups set up booths on Eas-ter Day to teach kids about ahuge selection of topics. FromRainbows and Bubbles to FairyTales, there was no shortageof things that interestedyoungsters could learn thatday. HKN helped staff the Re-cycling and Hand Puppetbooths. To the volunteers’ sur-prise, it turned out that most

kids already knewabout recycling andoften were more anx-ious to help recyclethan to make handpuppets. HKN fin-ished the day with theknowledge that if thisgroup of kids is repre-sentative of our future, the world will do justfine.

Service

Each semester, HKNvolunteers get into thedown and dirty of it allby using their own twohands to help theAlameda County FoodBank sort and stockfood. Upon arriving atthe Food Bank’s ware-house this year, asimple fact dawned ontheir minds: the FoodBank has a lot of cans.Thousands of cans. And HKN was volun-teering to sort them. But no job is too largefor HKN, so the volun-teers set forth in digging through the cans and placing them into boxes. Itturned out to be a very humorous afternoon though, as dozens of interestingproducts showed up and were packaged. Cans with no other labels than

“Pork”, or “Beef”, or even“Potted Meat” were foundamongst the jumble. Luck-ily for the volunteers, mostof the cans at the FoodBank had been sorted (per-haps over the previous fewyears?) and after only sixhours the sorting ended(thanks to our correctchoice of sorting algo-rithm), and HKN wenthome with a feeling of deepaccomplishment.

Trailhacking

One of Mu Chapter’scommunity serviceevents, trailhacking, isquite a popular eventamongst officers and can-didates alike. The name‘Trailhacking’ comes fromthe idea that if EECS ma-jors can hack code, thenthey can most definitelyhack dirt and shrubs. These events are morefun activities than any-thing else, since they leteveryone to travel to thepicturesque hills of the

South San FranciscoBay Area, and chan-nel all of their pent-up energy into physi-cal activity that di-rectly benefits theenvironment andcommunity. Duringboth semesters, HKNcandidates and offic-ers traveled to PaloAlto and createdbrand new sectionsof trail for everyoneto enjoy.

Berkeley Neighborhood Computing

HKN Mu Chapter enjoys putting itsconsiderable computer expertise towork for the less fortunate. BerkeleyNeighborhood Computing (BNC) is anon-profit organization that acceptscomputer donations, fixes them up,and delivers them to low income fami-lies. When HKN members arrived atBNC, they were greeted by the sightof hundreds of random computerparts. The volunteers spent the af-ternoon taking parts from dozens ofcomputers to build working machines. At the end of the day, HKN had as-sembled and tested more than a dozencomputers. As they went home for theday everyone felt tired but satisfiedwith a job well done.

Dave and Buster’s

Some people say thatwhen opportunityknocks, make sure toopen the door. Well,HKN’s opportunity camein the form of a Trilogyrepresentative whosaid, “What can we dofor you?” HKN’s re-sponse? “You could takeus to a huge arcade.”And so they did. In Oc-tober of 2000, Trilogytreated HKN to a nightat Dave & Buster’s.Dave & Buster’s is a lo-cal arcade and bar thatis touted as being largeenough for adults. Withpool tables, arcade games, and even a Battletech combat simulator, Dave &Buster’s definitely lived up to its reputation. Following dinner and a short Tril-ogy infosession talk, HKN was unleashed upon the unsuspecting arcade. HKNmembers showed off their virtual driving, shooting, and even dancing skills ina party that lasted all night long (or until 10:30pm, whichever is earlier).

Mamma Mia

In an attempt to give HKN members a taste of “culture,” HKN planned a tripto San Francisco to see “Mamma Mia”. “Mamma Mia” is a musical that exclu-sively uses the songs of the musical group ABBA. Members dusted off theirformal shoes, put on their best clothes, and traveled by BART to the Orpheumtheater. Inside, HKN members were treated to an event with laughter, tears, drama, and a happy ending. Everyone agreed that it was a worthwhile eventbefore going home to sit in front of computers and circuit boards once again. In the following week, the occurrence of people playing or singing ABBA songsin the HKN offices hit an all-time high.

U2 Concert

The biggest eventof the spring 2001semester was theHKN trip to watch theU2 Elevation Tourconcert on April 19th.Planning for theevent began at thebeginning of the se-mester. Early in themorning after the of-ficer retreat in Aptos,a group of officersheaded back to Ber-keley and the Sodacomputer lab to try tobuy tickets throughticketmaster.com.Thanks to the pro-ceeds from the jobfair and work of these officers, 50 tickets were obtained. On the evening of the 19th, the large group of officers, candidates, mem-bers, and alumni took a chartered bus down to San Jose Arena to watch theshow. The HKNers rocked out as U2 played hits from their latest album andmany classic fan favorites. Everyone had a good time hanging out andlistening to good music.

Hockey Night - Minnesota Wild vsSan Jose Sharks

As the final big event of the Fall 2000 semester, HKN invited all of itsmembers to an NHL game between the San Jose Sharks and the MinnesotaWild. The trip was long(over one-and-a-half hourseach way on a charter bus)but well worth it. Thoughthe visiting Wild scored thefirst goal, the Sharks cameback and vanquished thelesser team. The Sharksgave the home crowd adazzling performance, win-ning by the score of 4-1.Thirty-five HKN memberswent home very happy thatnight.

A “mandatory” event, semesterly officer retreats bringall officers, past and present, to-gether for a weekend of unadul-terated fun. These retreats pro-mote unity and allow the HKN of-ficer corps to form a very cohe-sive group. New officers quicklyfeel at home as they become fastfriends with the other officers. For the Fall 2000 semester, theMu chapter went to Lake Tahoefor a weekend. Despite the un-favorable weather, the officershad a blast, as HKN did many funactivities together, such as hik-ing, playing heated games of Mafia, and soaking in the traditional hottub. Thefollowing semester, the officers stayed at Aptos, a town not too far from thecoastal city of Santa Cruz. Some officers visited the world-famous MontereyBay Aquarium, while others decided to spend time on the beach. And true tothe major, some creative officers even created a computer from sand--you cantake the EECS major away from the computer, but you can’t take the computeraway from the EECS major.

Every semester, HKN Mu Chapter holds an Alumni Appreciation Dinner whereHKN alumni are invited to have dinner with current officers at the Old SpaghettiFactory in Jack London Square. The dinner is a chance for old members tokeep in touch with HKN and share their experience and wisdom from industryand academia. The guests introduced themselves one by one, each recollect-ing their funniest moment in HKN. In Spring 2001, after a great Italian dinner,HKN members and alumni were all treated to a rousing speech by formerpresident Danny Tom. Traditionally, at the end of each dinner, the bill is gath-ered and everyone makes a guess at what the total is. At both the Fall andSpring semester dinners, Shankar Rao came the closest to the estimation, proving that he is a man who truly knows the price of dinner.

Tilden Park is the setting forthe HKN Picnic, where mem-bers and candidates go tomingle and enjoy some freshair. Taking a break fromclasses and projects, theHKNers enjoy a fine barbecueand a game of ultimatefrisbee. In order to satisfy theVegetarian faction, the offic-ers cooked up veggie burgersalong with hamburgers and

hot dogs for everyone to eat. During the Spring2001 picnic, candidates and members were in-troduced to the Chinese Diabolo by PhoebusChen. The group also witnessed the martial artsskills of Francis Hsu and Lea Kissner in a spar-ring contest. Finally, the muddy field causedthe traditional officer vs. candidate ultimate gameto be played in the parking lot area. Both se-mesters the candidates' team, led by the VicePresident, stunned and defeated the officers'team.

Eachofficer brought a dishof their choice, andeveryone had fun eat-ing a mixed variety offoods. The providedentertainment con-sisted of pool tables, board games, and agame of Mafia that of-ficers and candidatesparticipated in. The Chinese Diabolo made a reappearance with Phoebus Chengetting disciples interested in learning the art.

It was another glori-ous year for HKNbroomball as HKN de-feated all comers andwon the annual EJCbroomball tournament inspring 2001. Broomballis a game of skill, bal-ance, and teamwork inwhich any number ofplayers are put on the icein their sneakers to try tooutscore their opponent.HKN’s greatest challengecame in the champion-ship game, where despitehaving less than favor-able ice conditions andbeing outnumbered they pulled out a 1-1 tie. Due to their undefeated recordthroughout the entire tournament, HKN claimed the title of EJC broomballchampions. There was one HKN defeat however, but simply because it wasHKN versus HKN in the alumni broomball game. The combined team ofalumni and candidates defeated the team of current members 5-3.

One of the MuChapter’s favorite ac-tivities is to invite agroup of candidatesout... and shoot them.Every semester, HKNmembers participatein a friendly game ofQ-Zar, where every-one gets a chance tosee what it would belike to be a Green Be-ret. Ducking, sneak-ing, and sniping fellowmembers is a greatway to relieve stress.Laser Tag is an activ-ity that both couchpotatoes and sportsstars can participatein.

If there’s onething that gets(most) EECSmajors down,it’s the male tofemale ratiothat we get inEECS classes. Inan attempt toremedy theseblues, EtaKappa Nu andthe Society ofWomen Engi-neers teamedup to throw acouple of funevents! Thefirst event washeld at the Oak-land Ice SkatingRink; where for once, HKN actually went ice skating. Guys and girls chasedeach other in circles on the very same ice that HKN uses for broomball. Abouthalf of the crowd made it their goal of the night to simply not fall down; whilethe other half decided that if they managed to move forward they would besatisfied. However, as in any event, some people simply have a gift for theactivity (gift defined as 5 years of lessons). These people darted through thecrowd and flew through the air, causing everyone else to fail their goal of notfalling down. Though the skating ended after a few short hours, HKN andSWE vowed to plan another shared event.

Theseevents werepopular andserved as agreat socialgathering andmeeting place so that HKN members could watch the game as a big group.Despite the fact that Cal finished dead last in the PAC-10, all of our membershad fun at the BBQs, and hopefully HKN can continue this as a tradition foryears to come.

On a beautiful sunny day in April, the Engineering Joint Council hosted itsannual Mini-Olympics. A competition for the most athletic students in Berkeley’sCollege of Engineering, the Mini-Olympics is a great way for students to getout for an afternoon and play the sports they love. This year, events includedultimate frisbee, soccer, basketball, volleyball, and tennis. Because HKN issuch a dominating force in the EJC, the Mu Chapter even lent some of itsplayers to the other team. Nevertheless, HKN still captured many team goldmedals and many more individual medals.
