Demons

director Ain Mäeotscast Ene Järvis, Ain Lutsepp, Mait MalmstenGenre DramaoriGinaL titLe DeemonidYear 2012

When Joko (Tambet Tuisk), Ants (Ain Lutsepp) and Reeda (Ene Järvis enter a casino, they can’t possibly be aware of the very existence of the demons inside them. Soon enough, they will understand that their lives are caught in a fatal vortex.

Every game has its flaws, but they are not always as risky as this one. We invite you to the thrilling world of gambling where there is more than money at stake, and the threat of losing it all — even one’s family — is always present for the protagonists. Eurochannel presents the Estonian blockbuster Demons.

Directed by Ain Mäeots, Demons is a heart-stopping drama about the danger of gambling. In the movie, Joko, Ants and Reeda have nothing in common but their streak of luck in a night at a casino. As they see their success continues, their greed leads them to discover the darkest corners of their souls, and their very lives will be in danger. Told from three different perspectives and based on actual events, Demons is the tale

of how lies and addiction can create a hellish environment for addicts and their families. The stories are brutally honest, often painful, but also humorous at times.By using a gripping multi-layered narrative, director Ain Mäeots flawlessly presents the three protagonists’ lives, without too much effort for the viewers, even though the characters inhabit different time frames. Such an entertaining and well-told story made Demons an award-winning movie at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival 2012 and a blockbuster at home.

Eurochannel presents one of the greatest Estonian films of the last decade and invites you to discover why most of the times the old saying “the house always wins,” remains true.

3 Must-see Movies About Gambling and CasinosGambling can be as entertaining as it is addictive. The thrill of being the winner at a poker table, the excitement of seeing money pour out from a machine, can be so tempting that even filmmakers find in casinos a perfect setting for their productions.

Rain Man (1988)Directed by Barry Levinson and written by Barry Morrow and Ronald Bass, Rain Man is an American movie starring Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman. In the movie, a selfish yuppie, Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise), discovers that his father has died and bequeathed all of his multimillion-dollar estate to his other son, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman), an autistic savant, of whose existence Charlie was unaware. On their adventure, the pair spends a night in Las Vegas where they make money in a casino thanks to the ability of Raymond to count cards. The film won four Oscars at the 61st Academy Awards (March 1989), including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Actor in a Leading Role for Hoffman.

Casino (1995)Directed by Academy Award winner Martin Scorsese, and starring Robert De Niro and Sharon Stone, this movie tells the story of Sam «Ace» Rothstein, a top gambler called by the Italian mob to oversee the day-to-day operations of a casino in Las Vegas. His character is based on Frank Rosenthal, who ran the Stardust, Fremont and Hacienda casinos in Las Vegas for the Chicago Outfit from the 1970s until the early 1980s. Sharon Stone won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture and a Best Actress nomination at the Academy Award.

21 (2008)Directed by Robert Luketic and starring Kevin Spacey, the movie is inspired by the true story of the MIT Blackjack Team as told in Bringing Down the House, the best-selling book by Ben Mezrich. Despite its largely mixed reviews and the controversy over the film’s casting, 21 was a box office success, and was the number one film in the United States and Canada during its first and second weekends of release.

Seventy-year-old Mati (Aarne Üksküla) is a passionate bibliophile who shares his free time with his sweet wife. When his wife passes, however, neither his adolescent daughter nor his dear books are of any help. Loneliness and indifference overrun his life; Mati plots his suicide, but a strange 60-year-old man seems to offer him hope.

“When tragedy touches our lives, it is difficult to remain motivated. Some people react with sorrow, some fall into a deep depression, yet others somehow keep a smile. Eurochannel presents an Estonian drama in which friendship and true love prove to overcome the hardest troubles life has in store in A Friend of Mine.

Directed by Mart Kivastik, A Friend of Mine tells the story of Mati, an elderly man who fails a suicide attempt after the passing of his wife. While recovering at the hospital, he meets a quirky old male nurse with an atypical view on life. Suddenly, as a bond grows between them, Mati begins to

realize the wonders life bestows upon him. This art-house film — shot in the dazzling landscapes of the city of Tartu — presents performances by beloved Estonian actors Aarne Üksküla and Rita Raave. The enthralling cinematography was produced by Jarkko T. Laine, known for his work in Mother of Mine (2005), Elina: As If I Wasn’t There (2002), Young Gods (2003), and the hit TV series The Class: Life After (2010), presented previously on Eurochannel.

With A Friend of Mine, Eurochannel showcases a movie that portrays a warm expression of solitude and friendship, which helps us overcome the bleakest periods of life.

3 European Films With Older Actors

Age means knowledge, wisdom, and especially for actors, experience. Movies with older performers in leading roles are not often seen in mainstream Hollywood productions beyond specific characters such as the one of Tommy Lee Jones in No Country for Old Men or Marlon Brando in the first movie of The Godfather. However, some European filmmakers defy the norm to produce amazing stories with older actors as protagonists.

Amour (2012) – France Directed by Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke, this French film tells the story of an elderly couple: Anne and Georges, retired music teachers with a daughter who lives abroad. Anne suffers a stroke, which paralyses her on the right side of her body, and Georges becomes a dutiful caretaker until Anne tells him her decision to die. The movie stars Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emanuelle Riva, two legendary actors in French cinema. Amour won the Golden Palm at Cannes in 2012 and the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at the 85th Academy Awards. At the age of 85, Emmanuelle Riva became the oldest nominee for Best Actress in a Leading Role for the Oscars.

Wild Strawberries (1957) - SwedenWritten and directed by the Swedish film legend, Ingmar Bergman, the movie presents an older man recalling his past during a road trip to receive an award he doesn’t want. The cast includes Victor Sjöström in his final on-screen performance, and tackles difficult questions about life, offering thought-provoking themes such as self-discovery and human existence. Wild Strawberries was acclaimed by critics and won the Golden Bear for Best Film at the 8th Berlin International Film Festival and the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film in 1960. It was also nominated for an Academy Award for Original Screenplay.

Elsa and Fred (2005) - SpainDirected by Marcos Carnevale and starring Manuel Alexandre, China Zorrilla and Federico Luppi, Elsa and Fred recounts the love story of Fred, a recently widowed Spaniard in his 70s who retires to an apartment in Madrid, and Elsa, a similarly aged but more colorful Argentinian and a chronic liar. The film had an American remake in 2014 starring Golden Globe and Oscar winners Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer.

Can the passing of time make us forget our very first love? Can society and its changes be obstacles to the true love two people profess to have for one another? Can a house endure both love and hate through more than a century? Eurochannel presents an original drama tackling all these questions and more in Living Images.

Living Images is an unconventional Estonian movie directed by Hardi Volmer. In this drama, Helmi and Julius, two lovers, experience the passage of time in a house once owned by Baltic Germans. Over the years, they see their love both supported and attacked, as the times change, until their final days.

This historical melodrama takes viewers through the twentieth century in Estonia, beginning with the birth of the protagonists at the top of the century until its close, in a newly liberated Estonia against the backdrop of emerging neo-capitalist values.

With a unique charm, Volmer delivers a special tale in which viewers regard the development of cinema, from black-and-white silent films to full color and sound.

Eurochannel invites you to enjoy an innovative approach to the difficult turns in Estonian history in a love story that combines the raw nature of early silent films, the melodrama of the golden age of cinema, and elements of comedic and epic genres.

Living Images 3 MUST-SEE HISTORIC

ROMANCES IN CINEMADepicting the daily life of past centuries remains a highly intriguing subject, one that drives box-office hits and award recognition. Perhaps in them we see just how human interaction has developed, as well as how different our interpretation of romance has become.

Shakespeare in Love (1998)Directed by John Madden and starring Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow, this movie follows a romance involving Viola de Lesseps and playwright William Shakespeare while he was writing Romeo and Juliet. Several characters are based on historical figures, and many of the characters, lines, and plot devices allude to Shakespeare’s plays. The film was received with acclaim and won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress.

A Royal Affair (2012)Directed by Nikolaj Arcel, A Royal Affair is a Danish and Sweedish collaboration set in the 18th century, at the court of the mentally ill King Christian VII of Denmark, and focuses on the romance between his wife, Caroline Matilda of Great Britain, and the royal physician Johann Friedrich Struensee. Acclaimed by critics and the press, the movie won two Silver Bears at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 85th Academy Awards.

Pride and Prejudice (2005)Directed by Joe Wright (Ana Karenina, Hanna, Atonement), and starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, the film is based on Jane Austen’s novel of the same name. Pride and Prejudice follows five sisters from an English family of nobility as they deal with issues of marriage, morality and misconceptions. Keira Knightley stars in the lead role of Elizabeth Bennet, while Matthew Macfadyen plays her romantic interest Mr. Darcy. The movie earned four nominations at the 78th Academy Awards, including a Best Actress nomination for Knightley.

A single mother, Marju (Marika Vaarik), tries to cope with her everyday life, making the ordinary into something magical for herself. She will suddenly and conclusively have to answer her own question: what do I want? She will be given a chance to correct to the mistakes in her life; will she cherish this opportunity or let it slip away?

Her struggles seem to be endless. No matter the effort made to overcome them, even the simplest things seem challenging, that is until one day she receives a mysterious visit. Eurochannel presents a feature with sparks of whimsy in The Messenger Knocks Three Times.

The Messenger Knocks Three Times, the debut feature of Elo Selirand, tells the story of a mother having trouble coping with everyday life. However, she finds in magic and fantasy a way to escape her reality until the enigmatic appearance of a man in her life. He will change her forever,

to the point of making the decisions she has always feared. With this fantasy feature, Selirand challenges viewers to ask themselves what they really long for in life. With the announcement of a tragedy for the protagonist, it also reflects on the mistakes we can overcome and the duties we can assume today, but always postpone for future, at times unattainable, times.

3 Must-See European Fantasy Films

As a movie genre, fantasy attracts a wide public. Whether in the form of children’s cartoons or more complex stories, fantasy dazzles and challenges us to travel to places never seen or ever imagined — in our minds. European filmmakers have made the most of this fertile territory with great productions.

Pan’s Labyrinth (2007) - SpainDirected by Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, Pan’s Labyrinth is a dark fantasy film set five years after the Spanish Civil War. It intertwines the real world with a mythical world, centered on an overgrown, abandoned labyrinth and a mysterious faun-like creature, with whom the main character, Ofelia, interacts. Pan’s Labyrinth opened to widespread critical acclaim and won numerous international awards, including three Academy Awards and three BAFTA Awards including Best Costume Design and Makeup and Hair.

Micmacs (2009) - FranceDirected by the man behind Amélie, Jean Pierre-Jeunet, Micmacs is a fantasy film set in a parallel imaginary Europe, recounting the story of a man whose father was killed by a roadside bomb. When he leaves the hospital without a job or any money, he falls in with an ex-con and makes plans to destroy two big weapons manufacturers. Micmacs grossed $16,331,174 in the worldwide box office and premiered at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival as a gala screening.

Night Watch (2009) - RussiaDirected by Russian filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov (known for his 2012 Hollywood production Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), the film is set in contemporary Moscow and uncovers an other-world battle that defends a 1,000-year-old truce between the forces of light and darkness. The movie is loosely based on the novel The Night Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko, and is the first part of a pentalogy, followed by Day Watch and other books.

The true story behind France’s “Red Widow”

The President’s Mistress

director Jean-Pierre Sinapicast Cristiana Réali, Didier Bezace, Serge RiaboukineGenre DramaoriGinaL titLe La maîtresse du présidentYear 2009

An emblematic figure of Parisian life, Marguerite Steinheil (Cristiana Réali) meets President Félix Faure (Didier Bezace), who falls madly in love with her. Becoming his mistress, she regularly joins him in the «Blue Room» of the palace, even as his wife, Bertha, is not far away. But the death of President Faure in her arms changes Steinheil’s life forever. Overwhelmed and accused, Marguerite Steinheil must face the people and justice.

Forbidden love affairs have their risks, especially in closed and conservative societies. Eurochannel welcomes you to the final years of the nineteenth century in France, to discover one of the most scandalous high-profile liaisons of the era in The President’s Mistress.

The President’s Mistress is an independent French production, directed by Jean-Pierre Sinapi, that presents the romance between the then president of France, Félix Faure, and his mistress, Marguerite Steinheil. In this story of passion, decadence, sex, and envious politicians, viewers are invited to ask themselves if Steinheil was really

an innocent lover or a heartless, provocative paramour. Interested by the passionate love between the president and the mistress, Sinapi offers the perspective of Marguerite as a modern heroine instead of a laid back lady.

Enriched by the stunning performances of Brazilian-born actress Cristiana Réali — who starred in Chez Maupassant, previously aired on Eurochannel — as Marguerite Steinheil, and Didier Bezace, The President’s Mistress is also considered a portrait of the aristocratic French society of the time. Come and discover the adventures and misfortunes of a French lady known in her time as the “Red Widow.”

3 Must-See Controversial Liaisons in Films

Cinema relentlessly pushes the envelope, exposing daring adventures and heavily guarded secrets. Indeed, provocative films often challenge our conventional notions of love, and thus explore complex questions about lust, infatuation, and power.

The Reader (2007)Directed by Academy Award English nominee Stephen Daldry and starring Ralph Fiennes and Kate Winslet, this romantic drama tells the story of Michael Berg, a teenager who has an affair with an older woman, Hanna Schmitz, in 1958. After making love each afternoon, Michael reads to Hanna, who is illiterate. Hanna disappears only to resurface years later as one of the defendants in a war crimes trial, because of her actions as a guard at a Nazi concentration camp. Michael, now a lawyer, confronts both his own role in his past relationship with Hanna, as well as Germany’s role during the Holocaust. Winslet won a number of awards for her role, including the Academy Award for Best Actress. The film itself was nominated for several other major awards, including the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Lolita (1997)Starring Jeremy Irons, Dominique Swain and Melanie Griffith, and directed by Stephen Schiff, this is the story about a European émigré, Humbert Humbert, who is obsessed with young girls, whom he calls “nymphets.” He falls in love with an American girl, Lolita, and marries her mother so he can take advantage of her daughter. The film follows their “affair,” and probes uncomfortable questions about the relationship between power and desire. This is the second screen adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov’s novel of the same name, previously made in 1962 by Stanley Kubrick. The film had considerable difficulty finding an American distributor and premiered in Europe before being released in America, where it was met with much controversy.

Brokeback Mountain (2009)This romantic drama was directed by Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA winner Ang Lee, and stars Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Anne Hathaway. It portrays the complex and forbidden romantic relationship between two men in the American West from 1963 to 1983. Brokeback Mountain won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and was honored with Best Picture and Best Director accolades from the British Academy Film Awards, and Golden Globe Awards, among others. It also won three Oscars at the 78th Academy Awards.

her childhood, adolescence, her relocation to France, her marriage and her death, all told in a riveting fashion.By blending historical footage, interviews with historians and scientists, and scenes with stage actors, the directors deliver a compelling and poignant tale of Marie Curie’s life, remarking her triumphs as the first female Doctor of Physics and the only woman to have won two Nobel Prizes.

Relish a documentary that presents, with touching expressiveness, both the joyful and heartbreaking moments of one of the greatest women in history!

The Contributions of theCurie Family to HumanityThey were a couple possessed of an extraordinary talent. Together they made history in science and physics with their many contributions, which were rewarded with many accolades, including the Nobel Prize. The Curies were passionate about new discoveries that could challenge established convention and aid humanity. These are three important contributions the French couple made to science and to all of us.

RadiumDerived from the Latin word for “ray,” and the source of the word “radioactivity,” radium is the sixth element in Group 2 of the periodic table. After many studies conducted by the Curies, who published several scientific papers between 1898 and 1902, it was announced that, when exposed to radium, tumorous cells were destroyed faster than healthy cells. Years later, Marie Curie also defined an international standard for radioactive emissions that was eventually named for her and Pierre: the curie.

PoloniumNamed after Marie Curie’s country of birth, Poland, this is a rare and highly radioactive element with no stable isotopes. Polonium was the first element discovered by the Curies during their research of radioactivity. It has various applications for human life and has been used in many forms, including in the implosion-type nuclear weapon design of the Fat Man bomb used on Nagasaki in 1945. Polonium was also used in the murder of Alexander Litvinenko, a Russian dissident, in 2006 in London. However, its beneficial uses include its role as an atomic heat source to power radioisotope thermoelectric generators.

Little CuriesAt the height of World War I, Marie Curie realized the importance of having radiological centers at the front to help battlefield doctors. She rapidly focused on studying automotive mechanisms and anatomy, and came up with mobile radiology units to assist wounded soldiers during the war. These vehicles were named “petites Curies” or Little Curies, and began operating in 1914. First assisted by a military doctor and her 17-year-old daughter, Irène, Curie directed the installation of 20 mobile radiological vehicles and another 200 radiological units at field hospitals in the first year of the war. It is estimated that over a million wounded soldiers were treated with her X-ray units.

The secrets behind movies and their directors

Jean Renoir shot The Rules of the Game in 1939, a dramatic fantasy that depicts the provincial French aristocracy in its raw nature. From nobles to servants, from a masquerade ball to game hunting, a small community is entangled in a web of lies, false pleasures and delusive love, and even passes off a murder as an accident. Though

initially misunderstood and greeted with mockery, today it is considered one of the greatest films in the history of cinema. Set on the eve of WWII in a climate of anti-Semitism, The Rules of the Game is the cruel portrait of a world in decline and the disintegration of a certain French elite, frivolously oblivious to the imminent perils.
