AUS School Swimming Championships

Australian School Swimming ChampionshipsA strong contingent of swimmers from Toowoomba Grammar School Swimming Club will compete at the Australian School Swimming Championships in Hobart from 25-29 July.

The meet will consist of the best school-age swimmers from across the country, with about 60 swimmers representing each State.

Henry Reardon, brothers Bailey and Cooper Harm, Abby Schoorl, Quinn Burling, Josephine Illing and Isabelle Mason are representing TGS. They were selected as part of the Queensland team due to their success at the State School Championships. That meet is considered the toughest qualifier of all the States, so that gives you an indication of the calibre of this group of young swimmers.

The Australian School Swimming Championships is the best Age Group swimmers in the country, and like any National Championship it will be extremely strong and competitive, with all the swimmers keen to have the glory of being crowned a National Champion.

The TGS team has been training hard for this competition. They had a few weeks break after the Australian Age Championships which was fourteen weeks ago, but they’ve shown plenty of dedication and determination during training for the past ten weeks and are hungry for success.

Previous TGS swimmers have been very successful at this meet, or the alternative Pacific School Games and this group is prepped, excited and ready to go – the Coach is too!

What is Quinoa all about?

It’s What’s Inside That CountsLots of friends to be made when you swim at the TGS Aquatic CentreWinter has certainly hit us, those icy winds make it cold outside, but in the Toowoomba Grammar Aquatic Centre it feels very tropical. In fact, you’ll often see staff wandering around in t-shirts and patrons peeling off their jumpers.

Our Learn-to-Swim pool is a beautiful 32ºC and the 25m pool is 27ºC. The air temperature in the Aquatic Centre is required to be higher than the main 25m pool temperature, therefore we are all walking around in 28 degree heat. It’s nice and toastie at the Toowoomba Grammar Aquatic Centre.

Come in out of the cold, enjoy a coffee and watch your children have fun in the pool.

Two of our little ‘Goldfish’, Matilda and Rueben, who look forward to swimming together every Thursday morning.

Richie is a ‘Goldfish’ and his sister Lucy is a ‘Piranha’. They love Tuesdays because it’s their swimming day.

Our newest Squad swimmers,Mikayla and Katelyn have just graduated from ‘Dolphins’ and are very excited to start Squad this Term.

What is Quinoa all about?

What is Quinoa all about?Quinoa is a small round grain harvested from a flowering plant that has become a popular meal component of recent years. This small and valuable grain is most often used as a side dish comprising the carbohydrate component of the meal, however, it may also be added to soups, salads and baked goods for variety and texture.

Quinoa is a low GI carbohydrate delivering a steady and strong release of glucose for the body to use (The University of Sydney, 2016). It contains a significant amount of the essential amino acids proving a more valuable source of protein than rice, pasta and noodles (Grains and Legumes Nutrition Council, 2016). Quinoa is relatively low in fats and is rich in minerals such as magnesium, iron, copper and potassium. This grain also provides the body with a good source of dietary fibre further proving its value as a grain in the diet (Grains and Legumes Nutrition Council, 2016).

Combined with a protein source such as meat or legumes and vegetables, quinoa is a suitable meal component for refuelling energy

and glycogen stores post exercise.
