comes across as sullen and hostile. "atniss must learn the importance of
creating a persona. 2inna, "atniss/ stylist, helps her )y designing multiple
gowns to mae an impression at the opening ceremonies. By following
Haymitch/s adice, she learns manipulate the audience )y faing a
romance plot with her fellow tri)ute, (eeta Mellar. This maes theaudience/s hearts captured and is soon on of the faourites. "atniss soon
learns how to play the game of a cele)rity )ecause she nows that if she
is portrayed positiely she will get sponsors.
$erywhere she goes, she is surrounding )y dreadful conditions. Her
clothes are not the )est3 they are always ragged and *lthy. This suggests
that she is not the richest of her %istrict. Howeer when she is in the
hunger games, her stylists transforms her into a )eautiful young women.
By wearing a red dress during one of the opening ceremonies, implies that
she is con*dent that she will do well in the hunger games. 4t can alsoimply that she is looing for loe and )y wearing red suggests that she is
selling herself for sponsors in order for her to win the hunger games.
"atniss is portrayed as a stereotypical teenager )y going out into the
woods where she was not meant to )e. This shows that she is re)ellious
which a stereotypical teenager is. "atniss is also portrayed as an anti-
stereotype )y olunteering to )e in the hunger games.
(eeta
hen (eeta is chosen to )e in the hunger games, all we now a)out him
is that he is the )aer/s son. (eeta/s character is contrasted )etween
"atniss/. (eeta is the opposite of "atniss. "atniss is the proider and a
protector, whereas (eeta is not much an outdoorsman, he is in touch with
his short side, and comes from a ery di!erent world from "atniss, een
though they lie in the same %istrict. (eeta/s character helps to deelop
one of the moie/s main themes# loe.
(eeta has always )een in loe with "atniss eer since he *rst saw her. His
ongoing a!ections mae him a sym)ol of the hopeless romantic, a role he
plays well on and o! camera. His feelings for "atniss capture the
audience/s heart, again maing him one of the faourites.
(eeta5s family lies in %istrict &', )ut they are not coal miners. 0ather,
(eeta5s family, his sweet father and unpalata)le mother are )aers. His
parents5 occupation puts (eeta one step up a)oe "atniss on the class
ladder 6though still far )elow the citizens of the 2apitol7. This might seem
to )e a rather small di!erence, )ut (eeta5s class perspectie ery much
shapes the way he sees the world. (eeta has, perhaps, a di!erent iew ofpolitical matters than "atniss and Gale.

(eeta comes across as independent and a calm character who dresses
maturely for his age. He can dress more smartly than "atniss )ecause his
family owns the )aery so3 they get paid more than what "atniss/ family
does. The ma8ority of the time that (eeta is in %istrict &', he is in his wor
uniform )ecause seems to )e always woring there. hen it was thereaping, he was dressed normally in a plain shirt and trousers. He has
)londe hair, unlie "atniss, which shows that he lacs in intelligence
9nlie "atniss, when (eeta was in the 2apitol during interiews, he wasn/t
camera shy. He portrayed as a humorous guy and easily won oer the
audience. He goes along with "atniss as the girl on *re with his suit as
they ride along )oth wearing matching )lac out*ts to show that they are
mysterious and may)e the )est. ith the *re added, it intensi*es to mae
them seem lie they hae a strong plan for when they enter the hunger
games.
2ompared to "atniss, (eeta seems pathetic in what he does. 4t is also
shown in the *lm that he lies to paint which shows that he is not ery
manly. Howeer, he is the )aer/s son which implies that he is strong with
a physical 8o).
(eeta is shown to )e a typical teenager. This is shown in the :uotation#
;They don/t own me< this suggests that he has a personality.
Gale
Gale is "atniss/ )est friend and hunting partner from %istrict &'. They )oth
met when their fathers were in the same mine eplosion, leaing them
)oth dead. He is represented as an optimist )y saying these words# ;we
can run away together<. 4t also shows that he has the more feminine
characteristics )ecause usually the women would say this type of thing.
+nother thing that it can show is that he is )eing romantic to "atniss and
he wants to start a new life with her. +nother :uote that could imply to
show that he is an optimist is# ;+ll they want is a good show< this suggests
that he wants to comfort "atniss when she is panicing whilst she is a)out
to go into the hunger games. This clashes with "atniss/ character )ecause
she is a realist )y saying ;there are '= of us Gale, only one comes out<
His clothes that he is wearing are nothing special, 8ust a normal shirt and
trousers. This suggests that he doesn/t hae much money 8ust lie "atniss.
+s the countdown is going down for when the hunger games starts, Gale
is hunched down on the >oor which shows that he is wea. hen (rimrose
is in trou)le, Gale acts lie a father *gure to her which is anti-
stereotypical. +lso when "atniss shoots a )ird with an arrow, Gale senses

trou)le and he gra)s "atniss and shields her, again acting lie a father
*gure.
Gale is presented as anti-stereotypical )ecause he is a father lie *gure to
"atniss and (rimrose.
(rimrose
4n terms of characters, (rimrose is the princess )ecause "atniss saes her
)y olunteering to )e in the hunger games. +s primrose is )eing dragged
onto the stage, she is always looing down which shows that she is not
ery con*dent which an anti-stereotype is. (rimrose dresses 8ust a)out the
same as "atniss )ecause again she is not wealthy in any way at all.
2ompared to "atniss, (rimrose has childlie characteristics. 4 can see this
)ecause she is )londe and wears pigtails. This shows that she is youngand not well educated compared to "atniss who is strong and intelligent.
(rimrose is portrayed this way to show how strong "atniss is as a
character.
Groups of teenagers#
There are two groups of teenagers in this *lm# +t the reaping and when
they were practicing for the hunger games
The reaping
hen eeryone was waling to the reaping, they all stood lie a pac.
$ery)ody was following in eery)ody else/s footsteps. This is
stereotypical )ecause eery teenager has some)ody that they loo up to.
They do eerything that they do.
(racticing for the hunger games
hen they were practicing for the hunger games they we training and
doing eercise3 this is anti-stereotypical )ecause teenagers are
represented as lazy and don/t do any eercise. Howeer they hae to
practice shooting at fae )odies and using nifes to ill o! a piece of
card)oard so they can do this in the real hunger games. This is
stereotypical )ecause teenagers are usually associated with iolence and
crimes.
+dults
The adults in this *lm are stereotypical and anti-stereotypical. They are
stereotypical )ecause they are shoced to see the teenager/s )ehaiourand they act negatiely towards it. n the other hand, they are anti-

stereotypical )ecause they follow when "atniss does her salute, which is
unusual )ecause adults don/t really follow what teenagers do and they
loo down upon them.
