The earlier view o tall buildings as large-scale energy consumers with little regard or sustainable architecture is

now changing. The new generation tall buildings are being designed with energy conservation and sustainability

    as their principal criteria.

Emerging Sustainable Green Technologies or Tall Buildings, Pro.K.Mohan, Dr.Ajay Gairola, Dr.Mahua Mukherjee, ppt

    presentation, http://www.brookes.ac.uk/schools/be/oisd/conerences

Dc: What energy-saving eatures do new buildings have that help protect the environment? Does your city

    have any such energy-saving buildings?

Researchers commissioned by the Government-unded Empty Homes Agency compared the amount o carbon

dioxide given o in building new homes and in reurbishing old ones. They ound that building a new home

emitted our and-a-hal times as much carbon dioxide as reurbishing an existing [one].

Demolishing old houses and building new ones adds to climate change, by Charles Clover, Environmental Editor, The Telegraph,

    2008.

The best way to revitalize your community may be to dress up something old. From an economic standpoint,

reusing historic buildings makes sense. Rehabilitating an existing building is usually cheaper than building a newone.

Historic Buildings Modern Uses, Heritage Resources Branch Saskatchewan Culture, Youth and Recreation, March 2007.

Dc: Read the quotes above. What are the advantages o reurbishing an old building?

    C

Im going to deend tall buildings. I know their problems. Im not deending any particular proposed

development. But skyscrapers have a lot going or them, and Im hoping I can persuade you to reconsider their

    benets.

The benefts o tall buildings, By Karen Cord Taylor, August 18, 2009, http://www.bostoncolumn.com

Dc: What benets do you think tall buildings such as skyscrapers have?

    D

We are convinced that the age o skyscrapers is at an end. We predict that no new mega towers will be built..

    Our world has changed dramatically.

In modern cities, many old or abandoned buildings occupy valuable land without providing a comparably

valuable service. In the past they have oten met with the ate o being demolished and replaced, but modernday sentiment..oten leads to a buildings reurbishment.

Kenneth Boyd, Giving New Functions To Old Forms: The Aesthetics O Reassigned Architecture, Postgraduate Journal o

    Aesthetics, Vol. 3, No. 2, August 2006.

Dc: Do you agree that old buildings are being reurbished more nowadays because o sentiment (an

opinion based on eelings), or do you think other actors are considered? Explain.

    F

Developing a caring approach to old buildings is essential to the whole community. Historic architecture

Unlike grati, a mural is painted with the permission o the buildings owner; in act, sometimes the owner pays

come rom the city o Pompeii, where the ash o Mount Vesuvius rom an eruption in 79 AD helped to preserve

    them.

Today murals can be ound in many European cities and can help to direct peoples attention to social issues by

bringing art into places where people live and work. For example, visitors to the Bachkovo monastery in Bulgaria

see the Panorama mural, which runs along the outside wall. This mural depicts the history o the monastery

through the ages and helps visitors appreciate the historical and cultural value o the place. Belgrade has three

huge murals, one o which was painted by Valerio Berruti, a well-known artist in the eld. The city o Athens is

planning a new project wherethe exterior walls o several buildings will be covered in murals in cooperation

with the Athens Universitys School o Fine Arts.

    Location and historyHampton Plantation State

Historic Site is located 16 miles

    south o Georgetown, South

Carolina. It is tucked away in

the remote areas o a colonial-

era rice plantation. On the site

    stands a grand mansion that

was once just a small armhousewhen David Garrick, a amous actor, bought 600 acres o

land in the mid 1700s. A historic kitchen building, huge

live oaks, camellia gardens and archaeological sites

also tell the story o Lowcountry rice culture. Several

infuential amilies o Colonial South Carolina lived

at the mansion including prominent amilies like the

Rutledges, and the Pinckneys. South Carolina State Park

Service purchased the property in 1971 rom Archibald

Rutledge, a well-known writer whose amily had owned

    the land or generations.

The plantation houseAccording to architectural historians, the original part

o the house was built in the 1740s. There are two

main foors, an attic and a raised basement, thirteen

unurnished rooms, ourteen windows and two

chimneys on both sides o the building. The pieces

used or the rame o the

    house came rom cypress

    and pine trees, marked with

    Roman numerals and then

    put together like a puzzle.

    The Hampton mansion is one

    o the ew buildings where

we can see evidence o this

type o construction. Duringthe tour visitors can see cutaway sections o walls and

ceilings and see how the building evolved rom a simple

    armhouse to a grand mansion.

The groundsThe grounds surrounding the mansion oer a

wonderul opportunity to discover the wildlie o the

Carolina Low country. Park services have created nature

trails or people to explore the swamps, rice elds,

and pine orests at their own pace. In addition to the

beautiul home, the park includes a picnic area and a

git shop. There are parking acilities outside the main

entrance. Dogs are only allowed in the parking lots.

There are mosquitoes in the swamps so bring insect

repellent and wear long-sleeved clothing when visiting

    the grounds.
