New for 2017! Founders AwardAspiro Green Bay Botanical Garden is here today because of the hard work and determination by a group of dedicated volunteers who came together through their love of

horticulture and a desire to provide the community with a place for learning and enjoyment, for celebration, solace and remembrance. The history of their mission to create a botanical garden for Northeast Wisconsin is more than simply a record of challenges and successes of this huge undertaking. It is a valuable example of how visionaries can bring seemingly impossible dreams to life through community outreach, partnerships and enduring effort.

It is in this spirit that we have created an annual award to be given to a group of individuals that best represent this dedication. We are honored to be giving this award to Aspiro.

Aspiro has partnered with the Garden for over five years to help their clients live their best lives while making the Garden more beautiful. Besides working on invasive species removal and weeding, this year Aspiro learned about our All-America Selections vegetable display beds while helping to maintain and harvest them. In turn, they donated the extra produce to Paul’s Pantry, where they also volunteer. This triple partnership connected all our organizations through the efforts of Aspiro, strengthening our community.

Corporate Partnerof the YearIBEW Local 158 and their affiliated contractors began their relationship with the Garden in 1998, shortly after we opened our doors. They supported our operations early on through our annual campaign and soon after became a sponsor of WPS Garden of Lights in 2002. They increased their support of the event in 2008

and have been the sponsor of the iconic caterpillar light display since then. As the Garden has grown, their affiliated contractors have taken a role in several of our projects. Most recently, Eland Electric worked on the Donald J. Schneider Family Grand Garden project. We are so grateful for the leadership Don Allen, Business Manager for IBEW Local 158, and his team have provided over the years.

Development Volunteerof the Year Bill Wangerin has been an invaluable resource to the Garden in overseeing the construction of the Donald J. Schneider Family Grand Garden. Over the past year, Bill attended monthly construction meetings, and, in the final four weeks of the project, became an invaluable member

of the team. He checked progress almost daily, and helped staff ensure all final details were completed in time for the Grand Reveal in early September. Bill also won this award for his similar work on the Donald & Patricia Schneider Education Center in 2011.

Guest Services Volunteerof the Year Jana Hudson has been a wonderful addition to the ambassador team! She displays a welcoming professional style with all visitors and is a dedicated, energetic volunteer. Due to her past work experience, her skills were invaluable while researching and documenting the unique characteristics of many tree species at the Garden. Jana compiled the research and pictures in a binder for easy guest reference. She volunteers not only as an ambassador, but also for many Garden events. Her willingness to help with various projects and time given to enrich the guest experience at the Garden is very appreciated.

Facilities Volunteerof the Year Bob Yashinsky has made quite an impact in only his second year volunteering at the Garden. You have heard the saying “jack of all trades, master of none.” Well, Bob pretty much is master of all! He has brought his many talents and expertise to volunteering regularly at the Garden. From electrical work, pop-up plumbing issues, small engine repairs, welding and fabricating, Bob

troubleshoots anything and everything. Along with a great attitude, Bob has truly gone above and beyond in his time here.

Horticulture Volunteerof the Year Most of us at the Garden have heard of the legend of Don Giese, but not all of us have had the honor of getting to know him, mostly because he did the majority of his volunteering on the weekends. Now that Don has officially retired, we’ve been blessed with his presence multiple days a week. Don is one of the most

Partners & Volunteers of the YearWe are excited to recognize the following corporation and individuals as our 2017

Corporate Partner and Volunteers of the Year

selfless people we know. Be it all the foreign exchange students he and his wife have hosted over the years, working with Boy Scout troops, or enduring blazing heat, humidity and tornadoes at the Garden to help us get the Donald J. Schneider Family Grand Garden planted in time, he is always putting others before himself. Don’s stories about the Garden and its history—as well as life lessons—are invaluable to us all.

Education Volunteer of the Year Don Brill is one of our extraordinary adult docents. His enthusiasm and impressive knowledge of the plants and stories that make the Garden a community treasure leave guests amazed and wanting more. We can always count on him to lead tours for all varieties of groups, often times for multiple tours in one day. He also shares his travels with us and our community in our winter Travelogue series. We are privileged to have Don and his boisterous voice sharing our story.

Special Events Volunteers of the Year

In the rain, wind and snow, Marcia Ward is at the Garden volunteering. She always greets guests with a smile and sometimes we even have to give her a gentle nudge out at the end of the night. She is the first face you see in the parking lot or circle driveway for so many of our events, generously giving her time to make sure people arrive safely.

No matter the parking challenge, Mike Duncan overcomes it. He always runs our lot efficiently and trains new parking volunteers for events such as Sanimax Concerts, WPS Garden of Lights, Fall Family Art Festival and more. The safety of our guests and of his fellow volunteers is his top priority. Mike often stays late or works a double shift because he knows how important it is to have the right people in the parking lot directing traffic to keep everyone safe.

Diane Aubry volunteers for many of our multiple day special events at the Garden. From bartending to concessions, she always finds where the fun is and keeps us laughing. She also volunteers for our bulk mailings for membership and events. Diane is so friendly and her sense of humor keeps us all having fun. We appreciate how generously she gives of her time and talents.

Youth Volunteers of the Year Currently a senior at Southwest High School, Caitlin Barkow is always a pleasure to have around, especially during a busy WPS Garden of Lights night. She volunteers on her own time while going to school and always has a smile on her face. 2017 marks Caitlin’s fourth year volunteering at the Garden. Even on the coldest nights, she is warm and friendly to guests in the Advanced Ticket booth and is willing to help wherever needed.

At age five, Harrison Manthei already has two years of volunteering under his belt, making him the youngest winner of this award in our history. His parents, Ryan and Michelle, have been bringing Harrison to the Garden since a very young age. After identifying a need to help control the Japanese beetle infestation, Harrison grabbed a bucket and began giving these pests a soapy bath with each visit. Thanks to his parents, he understands his role in the environment and about giving back to the community. He also volunteers with Green Bay Garden Blitz and helped implement a recycling program that helps businesses, schools and individuals recycle difficult items.

2018 Event Updates

As gardens grow, change and evolve, so does our programming at Green Bay Botanical Garden.

Many of you know the annual Garden Fair has occurred every year since 1985, where it began at the old Chicago Northwestern Railroad Depot, now known as Titletown

Brewing Company Restaurant. As a longstanding tradition at the Garden, it was with great thought and consideration that the Board has decided to take a break from the event in 2018. Many of you have heard us talking about the blockbuster exhibit we’ve booked for the Garden next year: Nature Connects®. The nationally-touring 16-piece sculptureexhibit made with LEGO® blocks arrives in Green Bay May 25 throughAugust 19. As we’ve recently been awarded a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Tourism, we’re preparing to market this event to attract thousands of visitors from throughout the upper Midwest. We felt closing our parking lot for five days due to Garden Fair would send a confusing message to guests that were excited to visit for Nature Connects at that time, but found there was no parking.

On that same note, we have decided to let Soup with Substance rest for a while as well. We will not be holding the event this winter, but hope to create some new and exciting programming for the winter of 2019. In the meantime, check out the schedule of winter activities and watch for exciting new programs in the Donald J. Schneider Family Grand Garden in 2018!
