ESCAPE TO FOUNDERS PARK!

If you haven’t had a chance to visit Founders Park yet,

you better add it to your “to do list” for the summer of 2012! Founders Park is a 35-acre park that provides numerous opportunities for enjoyable escapes. The below features were integral to the design of the park from both an educational perspective and from a standpoint of environmental sensitivity, in order to serve both active and passive users of the park. • 10-acre pond with boardwalks

located in the southwest corner of the property and a well head for the City of Carmel Utilities located in the center of the site. Pond provides opportunities for fishing, canoe launches, and outdoor classroom experiences.

• Founders Pavilion, located near the center of the park and overlooking the pond.

• Fitness and nature trails that provide escapes and emphasize pedestrian movement. These trails are tied into Carmel’s larger network of roadside and greenway trails.

• Geological education and play area allows children to play among natural features and learn of the natural processes that shape the environment.

• Rugby and lacrosse fields provide a designated area for competition, two sports that are steadily growing in popularity in the Carmel community.

• Adequate parking for visitors and buses.

VOLUNTEERING CAN BE

AN EXCITING, GROWING,

ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE. IT IS

TRULY GRATIFYING TO SERVE A

CAUSE, PRACTICE ONE’S IDEALS,

WORK WITH PEOPLE, SOLVE

PROBLEMS, SEE BENEFITS, AND

KNOW ONE HAD A HAND IN THEM.

- Harriet Naylor, Volunteerism Pioneer

PIONEER IN VOLUNTEERING, SUSANNAH H. DILLON

Sue Dillon has been a Carmel resident for over 26 years and has volunteered for Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation for over 22 years. Sue’s interest in the development of greenspace for the citizens of Carmel predates the creation of the Carmel Clay park system. She founded Citizens for Greenspace, a group of citizens who partner with local schools, parks and city organizations, developers, scout troops and city government to promote the importance of trees to the community, and was its first president and guiding force for 23 years. Sue established Carey Grove Park as an arboretum through her leadership on the Park Board. New species continue to be added periodically throughout the park system. Sue began the annual Arbor Day celebration in Carmel in 1988 and is an integral piece of the puzzle each year. She works directly with the department staff to organize the event. Sue continues to be a mentor, through this event, to the Boy/Girl Scout groups who volunteer to plant new trees in our parks. Sue has recently retired from the Park Board but continues to serve Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation as President of the Parks Foundation Board. The Carmel Clay Parks Foundation, Inc. is a new charitable organization whose mission will be to enhance the recreational, educational, and cultural life of the community by supporting the Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation system.

“How many people are lucky enough to have the opportunity

to help plan even a single park, let alone a whole park

system? I feel very privileged to have been living in Carmel

during a period in its history when so many wonderful people

volunteered their time and talents to make such exciting

things happen. Carmel is a very special place to live because

everyone cares about their families and their community.”- Sue Dillon

WORKOUT SMARTER WITH FITLINXX

At Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation, we are committed to your health and safety. At no charge to our guests, we provide the FitLinxx system. FitLinxx is a computer program that coaches users through their workout for better safety and form during every exercise. The computer tracks your progress and keeps a log of all exercises completed including repetitions, sets, and weight lifted for each exercise. You have the opportunity to also track your cardiovascular workouts and will receive periodic analysis of your workout routines.

When you schedule your appointment, you will meet with one of our knowledgeable attendants who will guide you through the workout session and teach you how to get started. FitLinxx users simply type in their PIN (selected during your appointment with a Fitness Attendant) to display their machine settings and target weights. As you exercise, FitLinxx coaches you on speed and range of motion. The FitLinxx system consists of 17 strength machines in our circuit.

Stop by the Fitness Attendant Desk (located next to the Fitness Desk) to schedule your free appointment. Follow-up appointments are also available at no charge.

Once you are entered into the system, you can set up an account at www.fitlinxx.com to further track your progress. Your workout sessions are uploaded to the website for your review. You will also be emailed monthly summaries from FitLinxx.

FAQS ABOUT PERSONAL TRAINING AT THE MCC

How do I get started?Contact Lindsay Willard, Fitness Supervisor, at 317.573.5249 or [email protected]. If there is a certain trainer you’d like to work with, Lindsay can put you in touch with him or her. If you aren’t sure with whom you’d like to train, Lindsay can match you to the best trainer for your individual needs. Your first appointment will be one hour in length and must be paid for in advance.

Do I have to be a member of the Monon Community Center or a Carmel/Clay resident to do personal training? Not at all. No membership is required, and you do not have to live in Carmel or Clay Township to participate.

What will we do during our first appointment together? You will be asked to complete a health history form and you’ll discuss your goals, needs, and limitations with your trainer so that a safe, effective, client-specific program can be created for you. Your trainer will perform a body assessment, and you will also be exercising. Please dress appropriately.

Lindsay Willard | Fitness Supervisor

FitLinxx is a wonderful way to help keep you on track when you’re incorporating a strength program into your fitness routine. Make an appointment with a Fitness Attendant and they’ll show you how to use the Fitlinxx program and make it easy and fun to utilize this system. It’s free of charge, and can be a very helpful tool when building strength.

How often should I plan to meet with a personal trainer? The answer to this is entirely up to you and what works best for you personally. Some guests meet with a trainer one time, simply to receive some guidance on a program they should follow. Some guests meet with a trainer once a month, once a week or even multiple times per week.

I’m in terrible shape and I’m a little intimidated by the thought of working with a trainer. Is personal training right for me?Our trainers have worked with people in all different stages of physical fitness. You’ll appreciate their patience and willingness to work with you, no matter how fit (or un-fit) you are! No question is a bad question, so come ready to work hard and learn a lot in the process.

We’re good. We’re fast.

People noticed. When people need help now, it’s good to know that St.Vincent Carmel Hospital is one of America’s first two hospitals to earn an Emergency Center of Excellence designation. Our average door-to-doctor time is consistently under 20 minutes. No wonder we received the Outstanding Patient Experience award from HealthGrades. We’re here for you — right when you need us — in The Spirit of Caring.
