From the ES AdministrationFrom the ES Administration Dear Parents,
Parent Teacher Conferences / Three Way Conferences One of our ten, research based learning principles which we use school‐wide to help guide our teaching and learning at ISM is as follows: Feedback enhances learning and performance. Therefore, ongoing assessment should provide learners with regular, mely, and user‐friendly feedback, along with the opportunity to use it to prac ce, retry, rethink and revise. (Wiggins & McTighe, 2007, Schooling by Design), Next Tuesday and Wednesday, you as parents will be able to get some mely feedback on the learning progress of your child. This is an
opportunity to celebrate their successes thus far and also reflect on what are some goals moving forward. These goals will connect to a combina on of content areas, e.g. Math, Wri ng or Reading; transdisciplinary skills, such as researching, problem solving or communica ng,; and a tudes or disposi on, such as being self‐directed, responsible or showing care towards others. Our purpose is for class teachers to share informa on with you rela ng to your child's learning at this point in me, and to give some direc on as to the next important steps to take. For Grades 2, 3 and 4, your child will be present at the conference. Our goal is to involve the learner in the conversa on, such that they too can feel proud of their achievements and be aware of where their areas for growth lie. We know that one of our roles as a school is to support all of our students in becoming independent learners, and make explicit the idea of ‘learning to learn’. Part of this process is about helping children to self‐reflect and to be able to chart a path forward. We look forward to welcoming you onto campus next week. Gini Rojas Visit Next week, we are fortunate to welcome Gini Rojas back to ISM. Gini is a world leader in English language acquisi on and will be with us for the second me this year, having visited ISM in November.
Gini will be co‐planning and teaching across all our Grade levels as we con nue to support all language learners in our ES class rooms. Part of Gini’s work will also involve a two day weekend workshop with 90 of our faculty, in addi on to a parent workshop from 7 30 am to 9 30 am on Tuesday morning, April 29, in the Li le Theater. Gini is highly engaging and deeply knowledgably in this area – it will be me well spent!

Re-enrollment: SY1415 Returning Students: Medical Update
Dear Parents,
As you may know, for a number of years we have had required medical check‐ups for students at different stages in their school lives: G1; G5; G9. In recogni on of the increasing concern about heart health, especially in conjunc on with physical exercise in a tropical climate, we shall be introducing a mandatory Electro‐Cardiogram (ECG) test for older students. Sudden Cardiac Death in Adolescents, especially during spor ng ac vity, is a recognized syndrome and well over 100 children a year die of this in the USA. Medical advice is that it makes sense to test only students who are 12 years old and beyond. In light of this, we shall now have two thresholds for medical examina ons instead of the present three. These will be in Grade 1 and Grade 6. At Grade 1, there will be a physical examina on performed by a duly accredited doctor as is the case at present. At Grade 6, there will be a similar physical examina on but with the added compo‐nent of an ECG. All new students between G1 and G5 will have a physical examina on; all new students from G6 onward will have a physical examina on and the ECG. In order to "grandfather out" our present cohort of students, please note:
Incoming G6 students will have an ECG, but will not need a physical examina on, since this was done when they entered G5
Incoming G9 students will have the full medical examina on and an ECG.
Incoming G7 and G8 will have the full medical examina on and an ECG when they enter G9.
We shall con nue to encourage very strongly all athletes par cipa ng in Varsity sports to take an ECG. Over the course of the next years, this will mean that all ISM students from G6 onwards will have had a basic heart check‐up. The ECG is not defini ve, and there is a more sophis cated check that the doctor will recommend if any‐thing in the ECG causes concern. The test itself is very reasonably priced and is readily available at St Luke’s and Ma‐ka Medical Center as well as other hospitals. Please take a moment to review our re‐enrollment me‐line and procedures for all students returning for school year 2014‐2015: RE‐ENROLLMENT URL: h p://goo.gl/rCwCAo I do understand that adding this requirement of an ECG may be seen as an addi onal chore for parents and students at the me of re‐enrollment, but if such a test saves even one life then it will be well worth the extra effort.
Sincerely,
David Toze
Superintendent
