    ES Sports Day

The Elementary School annual Sports Day on February 18th is now less than one month away! All elementary

families are welcome to join us for the full school day. We will send out more information in each parent bulle-tin and on the PE teachers' blogs closer to the date. This is a great day to promote community, sportsmanshipand collaboration along with celebrating the importance of leading an active lifestyle. Our focus is thatphysical activity is fun. Sports Day also provides a wonderful opportunity for students to display good sports-manship. Outlined below are some of the sportsmanship issues we discuss with children in PE lessons. As par-ents you can play a significant role in helping your child become a good sport as well as show your supportfor the PE programs at school.

For some children, Sports Day is the first time to be involved in competition where we have winning and los-ing teams. The following article below is worthy of discussion with your child prior to Sports day to ensure thevery best experience possible.

How to Be a Good Sport"No fair!" "You cheated!" "It wasn't my fault we lost!" Have you everplayed on a team with somebody who hated to lose? Or maybe youhave a tough time if you lose anything - even a game of tic-tac-toe.Some kids find it extra-hard to lose, but everyone needs to learn howto do it. Learning to lose without losing your cool is a skill, like learn-ing to ride a bike. You might not be able to do it at first, but over timeit will get easier. And when you can handle losing, people will call youa good sport.

Why Learn to Lose Gracefully? Everyone wants to win. But any timetwo teams or kids are facing each other in a game or contest; someonewill lose (unless it's a tie). Kids lose in small ways, like in a game ofcheckers, but they also might face losing in bigger ways, like whentheir team loses a championship game. Losing is disappointing, so it's

not surprising that kids don't like it. Adults don't like it either, but everyone can learn to control how they re-act to a loss. In other words, what should you do when you lose? The tricky part is that sometimes you mightreact before you even realize it. For instance, it's the last out of your Little League game and, in a flash, theother team has won. There they are celebrating on the field and you burst into tears. Oh dear, you probablydon't want to be crying right now, even though it's OK that you feel sad. The important thing is what you donext. Do you storm over to the other team's dugout and accuse them of cheating? No! The best thing to do is totry to collect yourself and get in line with your teammates so you can congratulate the other team. Maybe

you've seen Little League players do this. Each team lines up and they walk along sort of high-fiving the other team's players and saying "good game." To be sure, the losing team may notfeel like it was such a good game, but this tradition is one way to teach everyone how to be agood sport. If you feel like crying later or you want to complain about the game, you can dothat - but it's best to do it off the field and after you've had a chance to cool down. After a littletime passes, you might not feel as upset as you were right when the game ended.

    RABIES

We would like to remind everyone that there is a significant risk of coming

into contact with animals carrying rabies in the Philippines. Whilst the gov-

ernment is campaigning nationally to ensure that all domestic dogs and cats

are vaccinated, there is still a long way to go before this goal is achieved and

doctors now recommend that anyone bitten by a vaccinated animal should also

    consider having the rabies vaccination.

There is a vaccine available through the larger medical centers and some pe-

diatricians that may be given as a preventative measure to offer some protec-

tion if you are bitten. This will reduce the number of injections required, giveyou a longer period of time in which to access medical treatment and vastly

reduce the overall cost of treatment if you are bitten.

If you are interested in finding out more about the pre exposure vaccine,

please visit the nurses and doctors in the clinic or enquire at your pediatri-

cians office. We do not offer this vaccine through the school but we should

be able to answer any questions you may have.

From the Security & Operations Officerom the Security & Operations Office security office.

Each ISM family will be issued one vehicle sticker free of charge.Any additional stickers will be issued following payment ofPhp100.00 to the cashiers office.

In order to facilitate the easy recognition of authorized cars at thegates, the stickers should be affixed to the top right corner of thewindshield. Further to this, old ISM stickers issued in previous years

    should be removed.

    ID Cards

ID cards should be worn at all times while on campus. If you have notbeen issued an ID card, or you have lost it, you should obtain one byvisiting the security office and completing the appropriate application

    form.

Vehicle checksThe practice of inspecting vehicles will continue. During off-peak

hours all vehicles will be checked before they are allowed to enter thecampus. During peak hours (drop off and pick-up times), all vehicleswithout valid stickers and randomly selected vehicles with stickerswill be asked to undergo an examination.

Whether an examination is conducted or not, it is important that thesecurity staff at the gates are able to identify the occupants of vehiclesentering the campus; therefore IDs must be clearly displayed. Vehi-

cles with tinted windows must roll down windows to allow a clearview of the interior of the vehicle.

    Drivers, Helpers and Bodyguards

Drivers, helpers and bodyguards should not be waiting on campus forstudents throughout the school day. After dropping off students theyshould exit the school grounds and not return more than 30 minutes

before dismissal time. Those who repeatedly fail to comply with theregulation will have their access privilege suspended.

Only those vehicles carrying parents or other people with business

within the school will be allowed to return to the campus before 1:45p.m.

There are designated areas for unaccompanied drivers, yayas, helpers

and security escorts to wait for parents and students. Unless specifi-cally authorized, they may not enter any other area. In the interest ofsecurity, and to prevent congestion at the pedestrian entrances to thecovered parking area, parents are requested to emphasize to their em-

ployees the importance of cooperating with the security staff and re-maining in the appropriate areas.

Termination of EmploymentIn the event of the termination of service of a family employee, par-ents are asked to secure the former employees ISM ID card and re-turn it to the Security office. If this is not possible, it is important tatthe Security Office is still informed of the change of circumstances.

Finally, I would like to thank all members of the ISM community fortheir cooperation in helping us maintain ISM as a safe and secure

    environment for our children.

All members of the ISM community are reminded that it is strictly(Continued on page 9)

    Operations and Security

Access and parking within the campus are important security and

safety issues. For the well-being of all members of the ISM commu-

nity, those entering the school campus are requested to follow theprocedures outlined below.

    Vehicular Access

During drop-off and pick-up times, vehicles may enter through Gates2 and 3. Those entering through Gate 2 should proceed to the drop offarea and, once the student has alighted or boarded, they should exit via

Gate 1. Those vehicles entering through Gate 3 must turn into thecovered parking area and use the designated drop-off areas. All vehi-cles must exit through Gate 1.

Alternatively, vehicles entering through Gate 3 may park in the cov-ered car park. The spaces reserved for parent-driven cars should only

be used by those vehicles which are driven by parents themselves.

Vehicles in which parents are traveling, but which are driven by a

driver, should not use these spaces. Rather, they should park else-where in the covered park or make use of the outside spaces next to

    the power center.

Please note that Gate 2 may only be used by vehicles displaying avalid ISM vehicle sticker.

Family/company drivers should not remain within school once theyhave delivered a student. They should exit the school and return nosooner than 1:45 in the afternoon for pick up.

Visitors to ISM may only enter through Gate 3 . There is an area forshort stay visitors parking near Gate 1.

    The Pedestrian Gate

LocationThe pedestrian gate is located in the perimeter fence mid-way betweenGate 1 and Gate 2. There is a paved area between the road and the

perimeter fence, allowing easy access to the gate.

The pedestrian gate is solely for the entry of members of the ISM

Community at the beginning of the school day. It will only be openbetween 7:00 and 7:45 (8:00 to 8:45 on Wednesdays). Due to parkingrestrictions and in the interests of security it will not be open in theafternoon for pick ups. During the time it is open, it will be under the

supervision of members of the ISM Guard Force.

Drop-off ProcedureDrivers should stop adjacent to the paved area and students should

alight from the right side of their vehicle. The driver should thenmove off, clearing the space for other vehicles dropping off students.Under no circumstances should a student be dropped off from theoutside lane. This is dangerous as the student would need to walk

across the front of another vehicle.

Drivers are reminded that traffic regulations forbid parking on theroads around ISM. Therefore, vehicles should only be stopping for

the brief tine it takes for a student to alight. Drivers must not wait foranybody to return to the vehicle.
